Picking (Up) Winners Without Placing a Bet

By VINCENT M. MALLOZZI
NY TIMES

For the past 10 years, Jesus Leonardo has been cleaning up at an OTB parlor in Midtown Manhattan, cashing in, by his own count, nearly half a million dollars worth of winning tickets from wagers on thoroughbred races across the country.

During his glorious run, Mr. Leonardo, 57, has not placed a single bet.

indeed, an inspirational tale, it matters not where you are in the food chain, as long as you're in it, I'd place this bloke a couple of rungs above arbers personally ;)

If he has a day where he make $110 and his two friends bring him two bags each, then he pays tax on all the winnings he will make less than Money Tree.

Rather have a toblerone than a toffee crisp.

I believe the phrase Tobleroner has its origins in the obscure Gorbals dialect known as Eejiteese. It's a term of abuse to deride anyone that makes money using methods different to your own, implying that their profits wouldn't be enough to buy a chocolate bar down the tuck shop.

In lumping him in with the Ferengi you do the gentleman in question a disservice toenail. His money is extracted from the tote, not from ordinary gamblers via filthy, parsitic middlemen practices.

I just caught myself saying 'this is like picking money up from the floor'.

Which is literally what this guy is doing :D
