The Guardian's horse racing correspondent, Greg Wood, was today named as Journalist of the Year at the annual Derby Awards in London. Wood is the first Guardian and Observer winner since 1973 when Richard Baerlein won the award.

The trophy was voted for by the 300-plus members of the Horserace Writers & Photographers Association, after an independent judging panel had reduced the 20 entries to a shortlist of four, which featured Steve Dennis and former winners David Ashforth and Chris McGrath.

Nick Luck won the award for Broadcaster of the Year for the third year running, while the freelance journalist Alan Crowhurst was named Photographer of the Year.

Paul Nicholls is National Hunt Trainer of the Year for the fifth consecutive year, with Tony McCoy wresting the title of National Hunt Jockey of the Year back from Ruby Walsh. The remarkable year enjoyed by the Sea The Stars team saw John Oxx named Flat Trainer of the Year, Michael Kinane Flat Jockey of the Year and Christopher Tsui Owner of the Year.

In recognition of his 40-year training career which has featured more than 3,000 winners, Barry Hills received the George Ennor Trophy for Outstanding Achievement.

Fair play to him for sticking his head above the parapet, clearly keeps an ear to what this forum is talking about though.
Not hard to come up with these articles, most of it has already been written for him by us!
