would anyone recommend , or dissuade , me from buying an ipod touch to access betfair via wifi - thanks in advance

Betfair for the ipod is pretty basic. You can place bets, view your bets and see your balance. That's about it. The normal Betfair site won't work.
If that's enough for you, it's a decent device to have as a backup.
If you prefer full functionality, better to get a netbook if you can be bothered to lug it around. They're pretty small though.

You'd be better off with an Archos 5 30gb £199 from Currys 3g as well as wi fi.
Thanks investor - thin - ive never heard of an archos why do you recommend it - i am a heavy betfair user and would like some mobility instead of being tied to a desk all day
