I am so sad to hear this.

He was so exciting when he came to Liverpool, (always a great watch), and I am a united fan btw.

I was only thinking of him the other day and wondering how he was, and whether he was watching the world cup, and what he would have made of it.

Condolences to all the family.

RIP Kevin

Probably one of England's most enigmatic footballing characters ever.

His timeline has always intrigued me.

Since the mid-70s Kevin has several extended periods of either being constant headline back-page news (player, manager, Brut, Superstars, TV Pundit, Football Schools England)
or disappearing off the face of the earth for months or years, only to then return again.

Despite being a Sunderland fan, I bought his biography from about 7 years ago.

RIP

A proper superstar of the game and a great personality with it.

I wish we had more like him in the modern game.

I remember his spells as manager and he came across as a much loved man across his last 3 teams he managed: England, Man City and Newcastle. I grew up in a time when in the early 2000s so I saw alot of Keegan. Time flies. RIP Kevin. Gone but not forgotten.
Report duffy July 20, 2026 5:07 PM BST
Remember him coming off his bike during an episode of Superstars sustaining some nasty cuts, finished the race though!
Report ALIEN SEX FIEND July 20, 2026 5:10 PM BST
Remember as a kid, he ran on with the England team in a EURO 80s qualifier. Match at Windsor Park, shouting abuse (no bad language).  We done a number on England.... lost 1-5.  Came over as a decent guy. And felt for him with the I'd love it rant against Man Utd, wore his heart on sleeve. Remember on a wall seeing the old one, Jesus Saves..Keegan scores on the rebound. RIP Kevin and condolences to those that survive you.

Report mesmerised July 20, 2026 11:36 PM BST
He was before my time as a player but most people my age group regardless of what team they supported, grew up having a soft spot for Newcastle because of him and still do, some of my earliest memories of footballer were of his Newcastle side in the mid 90's going toe to toe with Man United. Reputations are earned in sport, when so many people from so many different fanbases on that era all agree he was a great player, he must have been a great player.

I desperately wanted them to win the league not just because of the breathtaking style of football but also because I had to go to schools with kids in London running around the playground in their Man United clobber, constantly lauding their success over us Arsenal, Tottenham and Barnet fans (they do exist) at every opportunity, your archetypal, pesky little Glory Hunters in their embryonic stages, burgeoning for a lifetime of brazen one-upmanship and incognizant smugness thanks to their complete non-existent sense of locality, a phenomenon that only seems to exist down here.

He always seemed like a simply guy to me when he spoke, meant in the nicest possible way, someone who just loved football through and through and saw life through a prism of optimism. I remember being amazed he gave up the England job given he must have been on a decent wedge even back then but gave up the dream role for the sake of the country because he didn't think he was good enough, very honourable. His words and actions as a manager before you even get to him as a player, are immortalised and imprinted in memories forever, the I will Love it quote, the slumping over the hoardings at At Anfield after the 4-3 loss and my own personal favourite, the cusping of the back of the heads of every manager he greeted in place of the traditional hand shake.

He'll be in good company up there, a few England managers have passed away in recent times, Venables, Sven and Taylor all gone within the last 10 years. At least he got to see one last World Cup final before he went, no doubt taking pleasure at seeing the Argies beat just before the lights went out for last time.

Kind Regards.

RIP Kevin Keegan.
Report tobermory July 21, 2026 2:08 AM BST
People too young to remember the late 1970s, early 80s could have no idea how famous Kevin Keegan was back then. I didn't know who John Lennon or the Prime Minister was but I certainly knew about Keegan. He was England's biggest star by a margin I don't think any player has had since. It was a huge deal when he came back from Germany to play for Southampton.

As Poppydog said, when he retired from playing in 1984, he then went from being ubiquitous to hardly much being heard of him for a long time. Other than being attacked by some random nutter in 1991.

One thing he did do sometimes in the late 80s was ghost written articles in the tabloids, saying Bobby Robson was useless and had to go. It was thought that he didn't like Robson because he ended his England career when he took over in 1982. I recall reading Bobby's post Italia 90 book and he was very bitter about the Keegan articles. I think they made up later in the 90s though.
Report tobermory July 21, 2026 2:14 AM BST
Roy Keane told a story about the 1996 Newcastle v Man United 'title decider'.

Not long before kick off Keegan walked past the Man U team dressing room and Steve Bruce was outside looking upset....

Keegan asked him what the problem was and it turned out Steve's dad was a huge Newcastle fan and was meant to have a ticket to see the biggest game in decades but either the Newcastle admin or Steve Bruce had messed up, and Brucie's dad was stuck outside the ground with no valid ticket. Keegan said "don't worry" and spent 15 minutes chasing it up with the directors or whoever so that Bruce Snr got his ticket and got back with hardly any time to do a team talk.

Report CLYDEBANK29 July 21, 2026 3:27 PM BST
I remember Keegan in Superstars.  Loved the show.  Superstars was kind of a misnomer.  The show was a great leveller, a sign of it's time and felt to me anyway like ordinary lads having a good time.  No pampering, elitism or self-aggrandisement like today.

A phenomenal player and manager. I adored the fact he wanted the game played well. Too much infatuation and win at all costs attitude these days.
Win ok but winning with dire football is worthless imho

As Danny Blanchflower said : "The great fallacy is that the game is first and last about winning. It is nothing of the kind. The game is about glory, it is about doing things in style and with a flourish, about going out and beating the lot, not waiting for them to die of boredom."

I watched KK from the Kop many times in the 70s when he joined LFC. What a bundle of energy and skill he was . His partnership with Big Tosh(John Toshack) was electric and we spent many happy Saturday afternoons watching them tear defences to bits.

Kevin was also a fantastic human being -never a bad word to say about anybody - even Ferguson- and he had a innate  happiness that exuded from his person. I cant recall anyone ever saying they disliked him.

His loss is very upsetting and a tragic loss to football and humanity.

My heartfelt thoughts are with his family and friends and I can say from personal experience he has left so many people with so many happy and lasting memories.

Goodbye King Kev you will be sorely missed YNWA.
