Keir Starmer is planning to announce a bank holiday if England win the World Cup, the Guardian understands, to celebrate the men’s national team finally bringing football home.
The prime minister stopped short of announcing a date, saying he didn’t want to jinx England’s progress towards lifting the famous trophy for the first time since 1966 – but it would most likely be on Friday 24 July.
The date would allow Thomas Tuchel’s victorious team time to return from the final – to be played on Sunday 19 July in New Jersey – and the Football Association a few days to arrange an open-top bus parade through central London.

and it is on a Friday because he might not still be PM by the Monday. And he has yet to announce whether it will apply just in England or the whole of the UK. Interesting but also tragic use of the waning power of the PM. Will French people living in UK when they win the final be able to declare their own holiday?

The chance of England winning this World Cup has increased enormously with Tuchel. But, i do not think the present team has the pre-requisite individuality quality to match the France team. Also, there are a couple of key positions where England is lacking France eg if James or Rice is / are unavailable.
Scotland took up the offer of a free passage home early before the offer was rescinded. |
