Tim Vickery who was on Talksport the other day said that most Argentina fans consider England to be their biggest rivalry which I found surprising and hard to buy, surely it's Brazil. We hardly ever play Argentina so looks to be simply be a Falklands Island thing. A bit like with Germany, most England fans including myself would say they are the one country we'd love to beat more than anyone else, but Germany would probably wouldn't think the same, more interested in beating the Dutch. Messi has never played against England.

England's h2h is Won 6, Drawn 5, Lost 3.
Competitive games is 3-2 England.

The lost games include losing on penalties in 98.

Two poor teams relative to the position they find themselves in, both struggling to pass and maintain possession for any period of time.

Argentina seem happy to concede possession, but whilst stopping short of adopting a "low block", in order to counter but are unable to mount consistent decent counters as they give the ball back too easily.

England too would probably be best suited to a counter attack style of play but will have more of the ball against Argentina.

I think the critical factor here is Argentina don't seem to be capable of keeping the opposition off them, in their recent games you always get the feeling that the opposition looks dangerous, their midfield is extremely weak and they don't defend with those two hard lines of protection.

England lack technical passing quality for sure but that won't matter so much in this game, against Argentina a high tempo will be important and weight of pressure will be enough, we'll simply over-run them.
Report mesmerised July 12, 2026 4:51 PM BST

Atalanta is the venue. Is it an amenable venue? Miami was taxing last night for some English payers.

England will need to play better than what they did last night. But, for Bellingham England would have been on their way home. Tuchel was correct when he said England were lucky to get a result last night.
Report CLYDEBANK29 July 12, 2026 5:59 PM BST
The key thing for me is the fitness of the English players.  England have come from behind twice and were down to 10 men at altitude.  Argentina have done what was required.  Both despite not playing great have raised their games when it mattered.  England have faced the harder fixtures and I think Argentina won't have the legs against a top side, so I agree England are faves, as long as they have a close to fit starting eleven.  (a half fit Declan Rice is definitely a concern)  Mainoo must be showing nothing in training, if Tuchel prefers James in central midfield.  Don't fancy either in the final, but both countries have shown they can raise their game when it matters.
Report SirNorbertClarke July 12, 2026 6:14 PM BST
England have a dodgy defence so Argentina could well prevail.
Report SlippyBlue July 12, 2026 6:25 PM BST
My book is showing a bigger green for Argentina but I'd gladly sacrifice a few shekels for England to qualify.
Report duffy July 12, 2026 6:26 PM BST
They won't have enough possession, they give it back too easily even with our shaky back line.

Against the Swiss, apart from set pieces when it was 11 v 11 they created absolutely nothing.

The shirt aside the Swiss would have been a tougher game than the Argies are likely to be.

I was a fan of Argentina after the first round of games and stubbornly kept giving them credit despite people telling me that they were sh1te, last night came the realizeation though.Grin

We're not much better technically but the semi is game that will be decided by work rate.

Switzerland were a bit naive. Embolo was rightly sent off, but Argentina got away with a lot of pretty bad fouls and a lot of play acting earlier on. FIFA seem to want Argentina in the final for whatever reason. Egypt were robbed and Switzerland didn't get much from the officials either. This is what England will be up against on Wednesday, they will get nothing from the Officials, and they are going to have to take it out of their hands. That means being streetwise and savvy, but not descending to Argentina's level. Switzerland tried that and ended up a man down. England will have to be very careful, they need to outplay Argentina without falling foul of the kind of dark arts and incompetent refereeing that almost cost France against Paraguay. It's a tough ask playing against Messi and co as well as the ref and VAR, but the likes of Anderson and Kane will need to restrain themselves, because any hard tackle by Anderson or dive by Kane or Gordon will be pounced on by the kind of inept and possibly corrupt Officials we've seen so far in the Tournament.

My reading of the match, Argentina play and work like a  unit on the pitch and although they don’t have as many superstar’s in their team, they more than make up for this with their team spirit, think England have the power to overcome Argentina and win the match,
Whoever’s star shines the brightest will decide the match will it be Messi/alvarez or Kane/ Bellingham

They are now 2.9, why do you think we should be shorter than 2.74, I would have Argentina in at 2.74, England at 9/4 and the Draw at 2/1. Argentina have the better defenders and the way we have defended in the tournament, the higher the quality players that we are now playing against. I wouldn't be surprised if either side reaches the Final, but I would just favour Argentina, but obviously hoping that we win and reach the World Cup Final and go on to win it
