As we all know, the better side doesn't always progress in KO football, and that was certainly the case here. Mexico showed over the 90+ they were clearly the superior outfit, as England were forced to rely solely on the odd counter attack. A real shame that the better side went out, but Norway certainly won't be complaining. What a glorious opp for them to make the semis.

In the cold light of day I don't think so, we just haven't got the technical ability against the likes of Spain who we'd never get the ball off or a France who have so much firepower and who wouldn't face a low block against us or an Argentina who are all round savvy and have you know who.

Thankfully, a game worth staying up for.

After the Mexico penalty did they even create a chance? I didn't think they were ever going to score. Just doing the same thing on repeat which clearly wasn't working.

The huge negative was listening to Shearer. Did he get anything right? Yet he wanted to drum home criticism of the referee who actually did well. He did particularly well to ignore the play acting of Kane. Not a good look, but of course nobody with any bias calls it out.

A gutsy display from England. They play as a team for over 40 mins with just 10 men after Quansah was rightly sent off. I cannot understand how a footballer could tackle in that manner. It was selfish and unprofessional. The pressure he put on the rest of the team was immense. Thank-goodness Engalnd managed to overcome the player deficit.

I'd like to think Norway is not Mexico, and with home advantage. As such, I think England can dispatch Norway more comfortably. I do hope James is fit, and Rice will start; Rashford can remain a sub.

3-1 to England is my prediction.
Report DixieDean60 July 6, 2026 12:58 PM BST
As usual we have the massive over reaction from most of the media (it happens win or lose).

We are suddenly all conquering heroes, winning against all the odds against the titanic Mexico side in their own back yard. It seems to have escaped these numpties that England were actually favourites to win the ruddy game and these very same reporters/pundits etc had been reminding us all week that England actually had the better players. Most of the Mexican side play in their domestic league, not exactly renowned on the world stage. The only recognisable name to EPL followers was Jiminez and he plays for the mighty Fulham (no disrespect to Cottagers fans Grin). Meanwhile England were choc full of multi millionaires who mainly ply their trade with the top clubs in Europe. Not exactly David felling Goliath as the media would have us believe.

Much was made of Mexico's record at the Azteca, but they usually play the likes of Honduras, Guatemala etc, Brazil haven't played there for 23 years and the Argies have never played there !

https://www.sportinglife.com/football/news/is-mexicos-home-record-at-azteca-exaggerated-and-can-england-win-world-cup-tie/233001

The altitude was indeed something of a leveller, but let's not get too carried away, Pickford had to pull off a couple of cracking saves and the defence looked shaky at times again, with more composure Mexico could have at least drawn the game. The likes of Haaland , Mbappe and Messi would surely have taken advantage.

Norway will be a different type of test but take Haaland out of the side and they are pretty ordinary, well organised but thats about it. England are a shade of odds on to win in 90 minutes, but no doubt the OTT media will try to convince us Norway are favourites Grin

This England side is not the best in the last 10 years. Last night the major difference was the manager Tuchel. Given the injury list he played the correct players, excellent subs and team tactics.

I think Norway is less formidable and England would win comfortably. But, France is in a different league; Argentina is Messi.

you're not wrong 1tp. if england had lost by one instead of winning by one, there'd have been a pile-on about all the things that weren't good and went wrong.
Report Des Pond July 6, 2026 5:23 PM BST
I didn't stay up, would have if it went off in time.
The game went pretty much as I expected: England won, it was a pretty hard shift for them in the conditions and with their injuries, Mexico were a limited, albeit spirited side and the right-back position was even more of a problem than anticipated. The right side went through.  Norway will pose a different challenge and with Haaland playing with confidence, they can't be taken lightly.
Report DixieDean60 July 6, 2026 5:40 PM BST
People were rightly moaning about the EPL having plenty of boring games donny, not the World Cup. Although plenty of matches in the last few weeks have hardly set the world alight.

In this match all the action was pretty much condensed in to a mad 25 minute spell either side of half time. Not a huge amount of incident before or after that period.
The tension was there of course in the last half hour as England were down to 10 men but Mexico created very little as they are not high on quality.
Report lurka July 6, 2026 5:44 PM BST
I was about to go to bed at 2-0 but then Mexico got one back so I stayed up. Glad I did, it was a good game.
England did well and deserved it but Mexico were woeful 2nd have esp their deliveries into the box which were nearly all either overhit or too lofted to cause England problems. They put two good crosses in which Jiminez went close from first half but nothing of that quality 2nd half.

The ref did well but I thought the pen against England could/should have gone the other way. The Mexican player can move his right foot left to where the ball is but decides to move it right to where Kane's leg is. This could/should have been denied for initiating contact imo but the ref/VAR prob bottled it. It is different where you nick the ball away and get kicked (like Madueke v Croatia). Anthony Gordon is always trying this, he got a pen against Kalvin Phillips/West Ham a couple of years back and did it again against Sunderland this season but it was rightly overturned. Should never be a pen.

The Norway game will be more tight/cagey imo esp with the heat/humidity. That might suit England as Haaland can be kept quiet in a low block.
Report ----you-have-to-laugh--- July 6, 2026 6:11 PM BST
I thought the Mexico pen was a bit harsh at first, but
he wins ball, or at least plays it, then kane catches him, so it's a foul, but maybe
not clear and obvious error, (never sure when it becomes re-reffing the game) but made it a good game, so...
Report lurka July 6, 2026 6:31 PM BST
I don't think he won the ball, Kane kicked his foot into the ball, ie the contact came first. He could easily have won it if he wanted to but he moved his foot away from the ball when it was there to be taken.
Report impossible123 July 6, 2026 7:05 PM BST
I think the result was correct and justified. England deserved to win more. They played well as a team and the tactical nous of Tuchel was superior and effective.

The England goals were well constructed and executed. The England penalty was rightfully awarded. Pickford made some very good saves.

Mexico had had their chances. Mexico played against 10 men for over 40 mins; the booking of Rice so early in the game; the sending off of Quansah; the awarded penalty was correct but soft; home advantage.

At the end of the night England showed a gutsy determination. Every player was excellent and played as a team. A quality so lacking prior to Tuchel.
