Awful final but the tournament was spectacular. A literal Opera and you could see and feel the cultural impact on football Italy had. Since the football has been on a downward trajectory into the toilet.
The Bosman ruling kicked it all off. Whilst it rightly gave players in situations like Jean Marc Bosman an out, it also gave players the chance to run down contracts and chuck in minimal effort whilst doing so. Personally I think the player should be allowed to leave once the contract expires but not on a free.
Add in the absolute pouring on of money and the game is now nearly stone dead.
FFP is basically a way of rigging the game for big clubs. You have the big clubs who love it as they know its next to impossible for new clubs to get better. You have tinpot clubs who also dont want anyone progressing beyond their level as it makes their lives difficult so any team with ambition is held back. The rule also was imposed after the the horse had bolted out the door in the form of City & Chelsea.
I remember when clubs from small countries if well run would have a great chance in a European cup (Red Star Belgrade, Steaua Bucharest, Dynamo Kiev etc...). No chance these days as any player showing even a modicum of talent will be playing for the City U18s instead....
There are no clubs anymore. Modern European football has turned into franchises. The foreigner limit rule played a great part in providing local players a path to progress. No chance now as they have to directly compete with every young player all over the world. No point in national leagues anymore if thats the case......Next stop some the inevitable Super league.
Now we have the latest world cup. Water breaks which are nothing more than an excuse to shoehorn some more advertising in (Jurgen Klopp has called it out) and the most laughable of all sponsorship of VAR which no one seems to have seen as a massive conflict of interest. A literal monetary incentive to go to VAR reviews for any tinpot decision or even better just make up a controversy to review.
Next up will be 64 where the mighty England will play the dog & duck FC. Of course they will get byes through the qualifiers and groups as they'll be seeded (Another form of rigging)
First world up I am watching next to none of and no plan to watch much club football either going forward.... Football is dead. Enjoy cheering on the carcass everyone.....
It was ridiculous that clubs could actually command a fee for a player who was no longer under contract with them, that had to end, in what other industry does that happen? The player honoured his contract, and should have been able to move on after it ended. Clubs had far too much power for far too long and were too greedy, now the shoes on the other foot they don't like it.
It's rare that players actually run down their contract though it does obviously happen, but the onus is then on the club to sell the player if he hasn't re-signed with 2 years remaining, that's the standard practice at most clubs anyway, I know it was at Arsenal for years before Wenger came in and lost his grip.
Generally players don't run down their contracts though because they risk being dropped and that means losing their international places and losing their value and worth to their personal sponsors, so an acceptable half way house is met where both sides agree a release clause. Trent may have walked away for a nominal fee but the downside for him is he's now disliked by most of Merseyside. Lower level players also risk reputational damage by downing tools.
It is true about PSR however, it basically means the top five or six clubs operate like some kind of cartel that helps to keep the likes of Aston Villa and Newcastle at arms length. Those rules need to change.
On the last day of the Serie A season, 75 out of the 220 starting players (34%) were Italian, there were even less English starters in the Premier League, 59 English starters from 220 players (26.8%), whilst England still have a lot of top level players in comparison to the Italians, it seems inevitable to me that eventually the English national side will go the same way as Italy in time, how could it not if you continually shrink the player pool. We've just got lucky that the few English players left happen to be top top players, whereas the Italians best players, are bang average.
The homegrown quote rule is also a nonsense that's already been exploited by the top clubs such as Under 21 farm loaning, so that's irrelevant as well, wont do anything to retain, harness or develop actual local talent that can go on and play for the national side.
Kind Regards.
