Hi all, Iām hoping someone with proper Betfair Exchange/football trading experience can help me understand the exact rule here. This happened in a World Cup football match involving Portugal. Sequence: Portugal appeared to score and the market started trading as if Portugal were 2ā1 up. While the market was trading on that apparent 2ā1 scoreline, I placed an Exchange order backing Portugal at around 1.4. Betfair customer support have confirmed my order was entered at 19:18:32. The goal was then disallowed by VAR/offside. Betfair support have quoted the VAR cancellation/suspension timestamp as 19:18:36. Part of my order was matched inside the VAR void window and was voided. However, the remaining unmatched part of the same original order apparently stayed live after the VAR suspension/market reopen and was matched at 19:18:38, after the VAR decision had disallowed the goal and the market was back to 1ā1. Betfair customer service are saying that because the remaining part was unmatched during the VAR window, it did not lapse/cancel and was allowed to remain live after the market was unsuspended. They say only matched bets inside the VAR window are voided. My question is very simple: In Betfair Exchange football markets, if a goal is scored, the market trades at the new score, then VAR disallows the goal and the market is suspended/reopened with the score corrected, should unmatched orders placed during that apparent-goal/VAR period be cancelled/lapsed when the market reopens? Or is Betfair correct that those unmatched orders remain live and can be matched after the VAR suspension is lifted? I did not place a new order after the VAR decision. The later matched amount came from the original order placed while the market was trading as if Portugal were 2ā1 up. Iām not looking for guesses ā Iām hoping someone who really understands Betfair Exchange football/VAR rules can clarify whether the unmatched part should have lapsed/cancelled at the VAR suspension, or whether it is genuinely meant to stay live after the market reopens. I have the full support chat and timestamps if needed, but I wanted to ask the rule question first. Thanks.
Incredibly, there is no info on this anywhere in Betfair's rules. They cover VAR, but not what happens to unmatched bets in the event of a disallowed goal. This has to be covered in the t&cs. One thing is clear, if you had your unmatched bet set on the default "cancel" it should have been voided.

If you place a bet in the market after a goal what is matched is voided and what isn't matched is cancelled/lapsed. Never heard of such a bet being kept into the market after it suspends for the VAR reversal.

There was no goal overruled by VAR and the score was never 2-1.
It was flagged as offside immediate.
The VAR timestamp of 19.18.36 was the time that would have been used if VAR overruled the linesman.
All bets after that time would have been voided if VAR had changed the score from 1-1 to 2-1 but since VAR didn't change the scoreline NO bets were voided.
Was it just coincidence that your bet was placed at that exact time?

Just had one on the Portugal game. Bet placed after the Uzbek goal, left as "cancel", some was cancelled after the VAR, some of the bet still stands. Can't happen? It just did!

If anyone can explain how on earth 10% of a matched bet can stand in the above scenario, I'd love to hear it. Fortunately, 3-0 Portugal cannot happen, otherwise I'd have been looking at three hours on livechat.

Every bet placed after the suspend when the ball crosses the line up to the suspend following the disallowed VAR goal is supposed to "lapse" The issue is that Betfair are somehow "lapsing" some of these bets but others are standing.

I had a look at the rules, there is some contradiction in the rules on VAR as they are contained in 2 separate sections - General rules and Sport Specific (Football) Rules - they do not tally with each other and the traders frequently misapply them. Quoting the relevant sections and have linked them both as Betfair have removed the numbering from the sections on their website:
Sport Specific rules state: 'Where a Material Event (as defined in Part B of these Rules and Regulations above) is cancelled due to a determination made via a video assistant referee, Betfair will void all bets which are matched between the occurrence of the Material Event and the cancellation of it. The voiding of any such bets may take place during the event or retrospectively once a game is completed.' https://support.betfair.com/app/answers/detail/exchange-football-soccer-rules/ This appears to be the rule they applied in your case.
But in the General Rules for Managing Markets in-Play it states: 'Where a Material Event is cancelled due to a determination made via a video assistant referee (VAR), Betfair will void bets as follows for such Material Event and the cancellation of it:
Goals
If a goal is scored and subsequently cancelled in a game using VAR technology, we will void all bets between the goal being scored and the goal being cancelled by VAR.' https://support.betfair.com/app/answers/detail/exchange-general-rules#managing
I would get onto them on twitter about this and quote the latter rule above, which states that they will void ALL bets (ie matched or unmatched). Do not contact them via chat or any other way as they are clueless.

I've had numerous disputes with them on this over the years and have been successful in getting my money back 90+% of the time. They often won't resettle the entire market but will just give you a credit for your bets if you are insistent enough. You will need the bet numbers for all the bets you want voided. The guys on twitter are the only ones with half a clue and will put your case to the traders if needs be.

Yes, but there are 2 rules which contradict each other, one says they will void all bets which are matched, the other says they will void all bets. If you quote the second rule and are insistent, they don't have a leg to stand on because the wording is 'will' (not 'may' or 'at our discretion' etc). They will just give you your money back to make you go away. Not worth pursuing for tiny amounts as there is a bit of work/time involved in explaining it to them.

The problem with that is if you're bet is matched at a price you are happy to take, and then gets voided due to VAR, you'd still want it matched at a later time in the match , if you are trading without watching. Pretty confusing rule and probably highlights why they need further options with keep bets etc.

It's also in the backer's interest to have these bets handled properly in-play. If your bet is wrongly allowed to stand and you green up, you will be in for a shock the next day when the back bet is challenged and resettled as a loser.

Why is it the case that the Twitter tech guys know what they're talking about and understand what you're talking about, yet on Live Chat it feels like you're explaining the ABC's to them. Can only assume the twitter guys are native and the live chatters are Romanians.

Easy enough to place bets when there is zero chance of VAR.
Problem is that we have people who watch the whole game just waiting for these moments thinking they might have an opportunity to gain some unfair advantage.
That's probably what happened with tommy144477 it's difficult to know for sure because his post contains so many lies.
A couple of years ago I used to email the helpdesk at least once a week because of mistakes by the trading team but they have greatly improved since then.

I'd love to hear how bf explain how two bets placed at the same time can be treated differently.
As bf are incapable of managing these markets properly, they need to either:
- suspend the market when the ball crosses the line and not reopen until the game kicks off again.
- suspend the market as soon as VAR is triggered and swiftly cancel all bets between the ball crossing the line and VAR coming into play, then only unsuspend when the game restarts following the ultimate VAR decision.

It was one bet partly matched and now it's two bets placed at the same time.
Why don't you give a proper step by step explanation of what happened? Bit like Tommy's explanation but a little bit more truthful.
If they press the VAR timestamp at 18:29:075 There will be hundreds of bets both before and after this but they will all be timed as 18:29:07.
