So old, I'm currently in a box at Cheltenham courtesy of Betfair. Cool

To be fair, the Royal Mail postage is cheaper than the tickets.

Oldest so far.       The betting exchange Betfair first became active on 9 June 2000.

It officially opened for business on Friday, 9 June 2000.

The first market ever traded on the exchange was the Epsom Oaks horse race that day.

That race was won by Love Divine, and the very first Betfair market handled 63 bets with about £1,476 matched.

I do remember my first ever bet on Flutter.  I laid Charlton to win at Arsenal at about 7/1.  They went 1-0 down and won 4-2 Laugh
Report CLYDEBANK29 March 31, 2026 11:58 AM BST
Arsenal 2-4 Charlton

Charlton capitalised on Arsenal's weak defending and poor finishing to triumph at Highbury.

The Gunners dominated the game for long periods and had 27 shots on goal.

But, as has so often been their failing, they did not put away their chances and were punished.

Thierry Henry fired Arsenal ahead in only the sixth minute, but Charlton were 4-1 up by the 53rd minute

Steve Brown equalised before Arsenal keeper Richard Wright bizarrely punched into his own net.

And within minutes of the restart, Claus Jensen and Jason Euell had given Charlton a three-goal cushion.

Although Henry pulled one back, the visitors held on stubbornly for a famous victory.

Arsenal utterly dominated the first 45 minutes. Their passing and movement was sensational and Charlton were left bewildered.

Patrick Vieira had already had a shot cleared off the line by Steve Brown by the time Henry put the Gunners ahead in the sixth minute.

The superb Robert Pires broke through the middle and slotted a pass to Henry, who shot left-footed past Kiely.

Arsenal should have added several more goals in a first-half in which they had 13 shots on target.

But they often took too many touches and were wasteful in front of goal.

Bergkamp, Henry, Pires, Ashley Cole and even Martin Keown all squandered great opportunities and Charlton punished their generous hosts.

First Brown got in front of Gilles Grimandi at a free-kick to send a glancing header past Wright in the Arsenal goal.

Then Wright came off his line to punch a Konchesky free-kick away from the head of Euell and succeeded only in sending the ball into his own net.

The Arsenal faithful could not believe what they had seen. Their amazement continued in the second-half.

Jonatan Johansson disposessed Vieira on the edge of the area and fed Jensen. The Danish midfielder advanced before curling a delightful chip over the head of Wright.

Within minutes, Jensen played a long ball to Euell, who shot low past the advancing Wright from the edge of the box.

Arsenal piled forward and were awarded a controversial penalty after an hour.

Fish was adjudged to have brought Henry down in the box, even though he appeared to get the ball, and the Frenchman coolly slotted the spot-kick home.

Charlton held on well for the last half hour, defending astutely and keeping possession well.

Pires and Henry had great chances late on, but the visitors held on.

I also laid Amberleigh House in the Becher Chase which won at 33/1 that November.  Don't remember any of the winners, but there must have been as I won £400 in my first month
Report CLYDEBANK29 March 31, 2026 12:36 PM BST
I lost £300 in December, but in February of the following year I got a thieving ew double up in the shops winning me about £2.5k iirc, and I quit my job at the end of September as by then I was consistently making as much gambling part time as I was making working full time.

The only wins I specifically remember were the old Ronaldo to win the Golden Boot at 14/1 iirc and Denmark at 16/1 to win their group.  Also had Senegal at 100/1 who were 2nd to Denmark.  Also remember backing Portugal to beat the USA as a trade.  I put a couple of lays up down the ladder both for the original back stake.  The idea was if the lower one was matched I'd trade out of it.  But then I was called into an unintended work meeting.  Came out of the meeting to see both lays were matched and USA were 2-0 up Laugh

Flutter was my first online account too, Clydebank. I opened a Betfair account but didn't use it as I didn't like the interface at that time. Eventually, the two accounts were merged.

I've had an account for about 20 years or more but only joined the forum 364 days ago , despite what certain other posters (donny Grin) may think about my having a "previous life" here.

Clydebank - i take it you are referring to the 2002 World Cup with those bets. That tournament saw my biggest losses ever on football, i had not long joined an insurance company in Maidstone and was being the Billy Big Bollix about my betting to impress my new colleagues. I invested heavily on the favourites to win the groups in 6, 7 and 8 fold accumulators, telling them all it was easy money.  The first game was France v Senegal at lunchtime, our boss allowed us to have a long lunch to watch the game and we all know what happened. Only 3 out of the 8 favs actually won their group. My credibility was shot and my new work  mates were p1ssing themselves laughing at my folly.
I restricted myself to horse racing tips after that Laugh

For a time the UK was the pioneering betting capital of the world.  Then the US banned us, and most of Europe followed.  Then came the PC.  Then came an abundance of slots.  Then came Affordability Checks.  Then came the rise of the black markets.  Then came Kalshi in the USA and the UK banned us.

It was good when it lasted
