Gillingham break a 50 year old record held by Sunderland
On the 2nd December 1893, Crewe Alexandra started on a run of 5 league matches that went 1-1, 1-6, 1-1, 1-6, 1-1. This was the first time in English league history that a team had 5 consecutive league matches where the scorelines alternated. Since then (and up until the end of the 2024/5 season), there have been another 121 instances of teams having a run of at least 5 matches with alternating scorelines.
Six years after Crewe Alexandra’s effort, Liverpool bettered this with a run of 6 league matches (0-2, 1-2, 0-2, 1-2, 0-2, 1-2) with alternating scorelines.
This record lasted for 77 years before Sunderland went 2 better. From the 27th November 1976, they alternated scorelines in 8 league matches 0-1, 0-2, 0-1, 0-2, 0-1, 0-2, 0-1, 0-2, as shown in the highlighted rows in the image below.
Since then 3 different teams have got as far as 6 alternating matches (Blackburn in March 1986, Brentford in August 1999 and Bolton Wanderers in March 2023).
Sunderland may have thought that they had this record sewn up for good, but Gillingham have had other ideas.
Starting on the 8h April 2025, Gillingham started on a run of matches to finish last season and then continuing into the current season of 9 matches (1-1, 1-0, 1-1, 1-0, 1-1, 1-0, 1-1, 1-0, 1-1). This is now the longest run of league matches with alternating scorelines. Given the Sunderland record lasted 50 years, it may be some time before Gillingham lose this record!

Football league substitutions according to AI

The honour of being the first substitute in top class football was accorded to Richard Gottinger, who came on for West Germany in their 3-0 victory over Saarland in Stuttgart on 11 October 1953. I think it was Somerset that had Richards, Botham and Joel Garner?  Botham visited my secondary school, not long after his Headingly heroics.  Only famous person other than Leon Brittan that ever did.  So for that I give him max credit!

Botham used to play in defence for Scunthorpe United too iirc.

Stuart Leary was an exceptional dual performer in the 50s and 60s - scored 182 goals for Charlton & QPR as a centre forward.

Also had a 20 year county cricket career at Kent, scoring over 16,000 runs and taking 146 wickets.

Tragically took his own life at the age of 55 in 1988, his body was found at the foot of Table Mountain , apparently having jumped out of a cable car Sad

Here are a few uninteresting stats
In the 1986 World Cup final, Argentina V West Germany, won 3-2 by Argentina, the five goals were scored by players wearing off numbered shirts.
The last player to score in the 1982 World Cup, Alessandro Altobelli, scored when Italy won 3-1, was a substitute, came on, and was later substituted.
And in the next World Cup Altobelli was the first player to score - last to score in 1982, first to score in 1986.

Are you sure that stat is correct 1tp ?  There are 380 games in an EPL season (462 games for the first 3 years) so only an average of two losing HT/winning FT games in a season sounds incredibly low.

For example - Last two Everton games - Beat Fulham 2-1 after losing 1-0 at HT, then lost to Bournemouth 2-1 after leading 1-0 at HT. 
A couple of weeks back Chelsea beat W Ham 3-2 after losing 2-0 at HT.

One of my old favourites which has gone now but still quite amazing bearing in mind there success in previous World Cups is that the 2002 World Cup final was the first time Brazil and west Germany/germany had ever met in the World Cup.

Regarding Clydebank's post about substitutes...
In England the first substitute used, I guess in 1967 ish, not googled, was Keith Peacock for Charlton...he went on to make the club's highest ever number of appearances, unless it's been beaten since
Dixie will know him well as he went on to manage the Gills in the 80s, plus Charlton and others
He is the father of Gavin Peacock, of Chelsea and Newcastle fame
Gavin went to my secondary school, about 10 years after me...OK, that's not an amazing stat...and now lives in Canada and is a lay preacher

Close Reg, August 65 was Keith's claim to fame. The Charlton goalie got injured early on and so Keith came on.

He was well liked at Gills when he managed them, known for his sheepskin coat Grin He was in charge for the Gills/Everton FA Cup trilogy in 1984 which had it ended differently would most likely have meant the glory years for the toffees of the mid 80s would not have happened.

Gavin was on the local BBC news last year - he had just come over from Canada for a one year stint as Pastor of Bethersden Baptist church (near Ashford), not sure if the year is up yet. Had a good career and seemed very content with life, good on him.

Also, to do with Charlton, I believe the Valley had the biggest single terrace capacity in the UK, if not Europe...the side opposite the Main stand, was huge, all terraced, no seats, must have held about 40k at a guess

After the Gills, Keith moved along the Medway Valley to manage Maidstone during their somewhat brief stay in the football league.
Nearly got them promoted but they lost in the play off semi final v Cambridge when they were in front late on before a certain Dion Dublin got two late goals for Cambridge.

The next season they were going well before hitting a poor run and KP was sacked, much to the annoyance of many fans. He was replaced by Alan Carr's dad Laugh who got sacked himself less than a year later as the club spiralled in to obscurity as a result of financial mismanagement and they eventually went in to liquidation at the start of the next season Sad.

Dixie it was a stat probably from 15+ yrs ago around the time everyone was doing a 6 team acca with EPL top 4 + celtic,rangers  and was highlighted in racing post as to what bad value 28,s to 33,s was for that bet at that particular time ,obviously the more competitive the LG the more chance of it happening

analyst - i have good reason to remember Carlisle in the top flight that season as Everton somehow managed to lose home and away against them. Had the toffees won those games they would have been champions Cry Carlisle eventually finished bottom of the table.

Chris Balderstone joined Doncaster the next season and created a bit of history, he was in the middle of a Championship game for Leicestershire v Derbyshire and was not out at close of play on day 2, dashed off to play for rovers against Brentford, then back for Day 3 of the cricket where he then completed his century ! He then took 3 wickets and Leicester won the game and with it the county championship. An excellent all round sportsman, he became an umpire after his playing days were over. Sadly died at the age of just 59.

1tp - i don't doubt that the bet is bad value overall, but cannot believe such a low number of games panned out that way. As an Everton fan i can remember two games i was at in 1994 and 1995 where we were losing HT and won FT - the famous Wimbledon game on the last day of the season, 2-1 down at HT, won 3-2 and March 95, away at QPR, 1-0 down at HT, again won 3-2. And that's just my club, there must be many more examples.

Would be interested how often the supposed big teams are losing at half time and win at full time. The likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid,Celtic, Rangers and united when fergie was manager. If you backed them blindly would only need them to do it twice a season to eek out a small profit.

Years ago thought about doing it with Rangers and Celtic every week in a small double 25-1 and 25-1 equals a 675-1 double, would be like buying a lottery ticket I know but a fun bet with potential decent pick up. With them normally kicking off at different times could play them on the exchange potentially getting a slightly bigger price.
