Toffees second best v Sunderland even though its only 1 nil , can't see us scoring with no creativity out there.  Hardly surprising given they have a small squad and are without NINE first teamers. Bench is full of academy kids. Might have been better just going with two up front and hoofing the ball up to the big men.

Tough times after a promising start to the season. Young Dibling is looking rather overpriced on the evidence so far  but still early days for him. Dwight McNeill very disappointing having finally got back in the team, he was playing very well a couple of seasons back under Sean Dyche but hasn't been the same since coming back from injury.

Report tobiasr January 10, 2026 2:02 PM GMT
pitch excuse is a nonsense as well. if palace haven't spent the whole week training on a synthetic pitch then they deserve this loss

glasner needs to go after that. no doubt he will be blaming the club for not getting players in during the summer but that's got nothing to do with how bad they were in this match

Completely deserved win for Macclesfield, remarkable that they are only 14th in National League South. Palace awful, complacency ?
Has to be ranked as one of the biggest ever shocks in FA Cup history.
Another reminder as well of how average the EPL is at the moment.

The kids that came on for the toffees did well so hope for the future.
Unfortunately having done well to get to penalties they then proceeded to miss their first three, two of which were very poor efforts (Beto and Barry of course Cry) , just put your ruddy laces through it ffs !  Sunderland pen takers on the other hand did hammer all three they took in to the net, an object lesson in how to do so.

It was borderline surreal watching them play so badly.
Report CLYDEBANK29 January 11, 2026 12:37 AM GMT
Well Palace can concentrate on the League and Europa Conference League now.  mesmerised tipped them to win the PL Laugh

The ECL is shocking.  Mainz are bottom of the Bundesliga.  Fiorentina are 2nd bottom of Serie A.  Rayo are 6th from bottom of La Liga.

Palace have been awful in that so far, losing at home to Larnaca and drawing at home to Kups (who prolly aren't much better than Macclesfield), showing a severe lack of squad depth.

Hopefully they can take a leaf out of Spurs and Man U's book and prioritise it as they've got nothing else to play for, and the ECL this year is the weakest version of the new tournament by far.

I am sorry but Palace losing to the Macc Lads is nowhere near the biggest upset in FA Cup history.

Palace are a mid-table Prem team struggling with a small squad in a season in which they have to play 2 games a week.
Macclesfield are really a football league team who have fallen on hard times, which is not unusual I am sad to say.

For my money Walsall beating Herbert Chapman's Arsenal in 1933 or Colchester beating Don Revie's Leeds in 1971 are bigger upsets.
There is a quantum leap from beating a top division side to beating the team which is the best in the land. Dominating English football as both the Ersenal and Leeds were.

And if you go North of the border you have Souness all conquering Rangers team losing to Hamilton Academicals or indeed the infamous 'Super Caley go ballistic Celtic are atrocious' game when Caley Thistle saw off Celtic in 2000.

Report DixieDean60 January 11, 2026 2:33 PM GMT
It's certainly stretching it a bit - they are 14th in National League North ffs !  They do have a couple of games in hand on those above so could make the play offs with a good run but are currently 22 points off the team in first place.

Yesterdays result certainly IS one of the biggest shocks in FA Cup history but such things are subjective of course, however i would certainly say that Colchester beating the mighty Leeds in 71 was the one the whole country was talking about and would get my vote as the biggest ever upset.

If you are looking at cold hard facts though , the only real metric you can use is the difference in league placings (117 in Maccs case) between teams which is why the BBC (and others) are describing Macclesfield's win as the biggest shock ever.

for comparison in palace game the only real ? is where would that palace team yesterday be placed in the pyramid , as paul merson pointed out a month ago, some of these EPL under 21  teams are getting absolutely pummelled when they play EFL lg one and 2 sides in these cup comps,
Report stu January 12, 2026 12:35 PM GMT
I think Liverpool will know they could lose this if they put out a 'junior' side - Barnsley are not that poor to be able to do that.

I'm expecting a fairly strong Liverpool side - they don't have too much distraction from the FA cup this year.
Report stu January 12, 2026 12:42 PM GMT
In his matchday programme column for the 7.45pm GMT kick-off, the head coach writes:

"Given our position in the Premier League is currently not what we would want it to be, the FA Cup is a competition that gives us a fresh opportunity to build something meaningful"

I think he'll want to make certain of progressing, so would be surprised to see heavily weakened side playing.
