Down to earth brilliance. No prima Donna stuff ever on show just the fantastic talent to control a football while taking fullbacks on their outside. His goal to beat Hamburg was a perfect piece of match-reading, gile and skill. Having uncharacteristically cut inside he nonplussed their defence by not taking an extra stride but deceiving and adjusting to strike the ball sweetly, imparting the necessary spin required. Footballing brain to match the skill.

yes a top player and a delight to watch. He was a very gifted and skillful footballer.

I think it was Ian Bowyer who Cloughie said to, I want you to win the ball from the opposition & pass it to John, who can actually play football.
Great player, very deceptive, if he didn't score
and create as many it's likely he wouldn't get a game
for his work rate. But his delivery and shooting
really was top notch. A bit like David Beckham without
the glamour and two good feet instead of one.
