Extra time in  drawn Cup ties:  Play 6 a side with unlimited substitutions (like in ice hockey players have to go to the

technical area to go off) . I think it would be  a much better way than the present setup.

I've said this for years- way better than penalties
Report tobermory December 17, 2025 10:12 PM GMT
unlimited subs should be a part of the regular 90 minutes
Report brians December 17, 2025 11:50 PM GMT
Works in ice hockey because the game is not stopped. Players change on the fly. This would have to apply in football or teams would use it for timewasting, getting a breath , back, breaking up a dominant period or just a coaches timeout talk. Gameswouldlastforever.

Straight to pens in club comps. They play too much already

Ban extra time in cups,..yep agreed.
Report Aspro December 18, 2025 12:23 PM GMT
6-A-Side is not proper football so could never agree to that (assuming I even had a choice). Unlimited subs would be a nightmare too, but would gladly accept straight to penalties. Sorted.
Report tobermory December 18, 2025 12:32 PM GMT
How is 6 a side penalties closer to proper football, than 6 side actually playing football
Report Aspro December 18, 2025 1:21 PM GMT
No idea what you're asking tobes. If we're going to have ET I'd prefer 11x11. Penalties as they've always been. I'd prefer no ET. Thought that was clear.
Report kincsem December 18, 2025 3:54 PM GMT
A penalty shoot-out is ok to decide ties.
If only one substitute was allowed my guess is a win would be more likely after 90 minutes.
Now it is like tag-team wrestling with constant stoppages for substitutions.
Each team ends the 90 minutes with fresh players.

VAR is another big delay to play.

And in the 2026 World Cup we are going to have "water breaks" which are only a device to introduce TV advertising breaks.
Yes, players need hydration, but they can do that in the many stoppages (corners, free kicks, penalties, goal kicks).
We will end up like American football, a game with two teams of 50 players, play totally interrupted by TV advertising.
Unlimited substitutions as mentioned above would reduce the game to a farce.
Report ----you-have-to-laugh--- December 18, 2025 4:36 PM GMT
I'd like to see a forced substitution for
2 yellows rather than a sending off. With player
banned for next game plus next time he faces team
he was sent off against.

This would allow refs to use yellows again as a sanction
without ruining game by sending off. They are getting
very reluctant.

Could be naughty too and if a 2nd player gets 2 yellows
allow the other team to select who is removed from
game, with culprit serving future game bans.

I’ve long since opined that extra time should be done away with.  A draw should go straight to pelantys for me.  Any game with just a goal of separation would set up for a far more entertaining final fifteen minutes and, we might even see drawing opponents actually going for the win then too.  Apart from that it would help the most vital components of it all - the players whose bodies must take a big hit.  120 mins. plus must be a significant hazard to health in high degree temperatures.  And we would be spared serious levels of tedium.  Love

Players that already have 90 minutes in their legs and then are asked to cover whopping great spaces would lead to more injuries, unlimited subs would be a complete mess but you would probably sign someone like Usain Bolt for this occurenceGrin

The simpler the better for me.

As seemingly inadequate as they often seems, pens are as good as anything else, a test of nerve and skill so not really a lottery.
Report thelatarps December 18, 2025 8:20 PM GMT
The golden goal rule was fine.
Except childish footballers couldn't accept it and if they lost chased the ref down the tunnel looking for someone to blame.
Might as well just go straight to pens.
Extra Time is a waste of space.
Report Aspro December 18, 2025 9:08 PM GMT
Golden Goal was awful imo. An overly cautious game rather than gung ho for the goal. Hated it.
Report thelatarps December 18, 2025 10:43 PM GMT
Well if you dont like the golden goal, I have other bad ideas.

How about a football version of the Razzies?
We have had SPOTY, the Ballon D'Or, The football writers and Players of the Year.

Arsenal need to lose in 90 to Palace.

I liked the "golden-goal" idea.

Worst manager - a man who has made an instant impact - Wilfried Nancy.
On the plus side he is displaying a deal of courage.

fwiw

mug of the year
Mbappe, he might have scored 59 goals but he moved from PSG to Madrid to win the UCL. Only for his old club to improve exponentially without him.

Mug of the year team.
Got to go for Liverpool. The way they got mugged off by Trent in that press conference was a joy. Then went out and spent like Real to get worse. Classic overcompensation.

Dirtiest Bstard.
Cuti Romero can act like a schoolyard bully on a snickers-bar-sugar-rush but he is wholly ineffective. Dani Carvajal gets the award cos his team wins.

Outhouse merchant.
Has to be Emi Martinez.

Worst Manager.
Nancy gets a mention but Russell Martin at Rangers surely deserves the prize.

Worst Owner
Dejphon Chansiri sheff weds. Yikes.

Biggest Diver.
Anthony Gordon. No question. CHelsea fans. I hear you.

Worst commentator.
Special mention for Sam Matterface who makes the england experience particularly unbearable. But anyone who has had the misfortune to sit thru TNT sports output has to recognise Darren Fletcher as the worst.

Worst Pundit.
RedNev going downhill faster than Franz Klammer in his heighday but the award has to go to Steve MacManaman. His TNT double act with Darren Fletcher is the worst since Mike and Bernie Winters.

Worst Journo.
Henry Winter. Got sacked off from the Times over a year ago. No wonder. His anodyne output is mindnumbingly tedious.
I shall always recall a match in lockdown between PSG and Marseille.
Neymar as he usually did in such matches got himself sent off, claiming racial abuse.
Winter was straight on Twitter with 'I stand with Neymar'. Blatantly clear he hadnt watched a moment of the match. I did. Neymar and the accused Jordan Amavi had been going at eachother for 90 mins and it was no surprise that the ref sent the pair of them off. Amavi was himself of Romany descent.
The French FA having reviewed all evidence wisely decided the punishment for the red cards alone would stand.
No doubt in the dear old premier league Henry would have got his way and the Olympique Marseille player banned for 47 games or whatever.

Worst Ref.
As cringeworthy as it is to see EPL refs in action, especially when they are given big international games the award has to go to the French ref Clement Turpin. Looks like Puggsly from the Addams Family and really does think the game is all about him.
Report thelatarps December 21, 2025 12:59 PM GMT
Oh and..
Most Deluded Fanbase.
Honourable mention for Spurs. But the award has to go to Man U. For every 50yo Mancunian who was thankful for the Fergus years but knew it couldnt last, there must be a dozen glory hunters who think their club should be the Bayern Munich of the EPL. Winning it every year.
Their blaming of the Glazers for everything from global warming to the war in Ukraine led them to Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
How did that work out?
60 quid tickets for OAPs and kids, sacking the tea lady & the promise of some 'Wembley of the North' new stadium likely to ensure, as Fergus himself has acknowledged, no league title for at least another ten years.
Chapeau!

Not a bad review.  Very welcome and enjoyable.  Love
“than Frank Klammer in his heyday”!  Laugh  My old ma loved him.
Gordon definitely a liability, for all his talent.
