100% agree. It's the only solution imo
Report Aspro November 3, 2025 11:36 AM GMT
Another thing with this idea is that there is no added time. Everyone reading from the same page.
Report SirNorbertClarke November 3, 2025 1:05 PM GMT
This would take away the Ref's power to give the team he wants to win a minute or two extra added time.

We can't possibly allow that!
Report brassneck November 3, 2025 3:46 PM GMT
but the Mighty Gunners can pass the ball about to each other for 35 minutes.Grin

Players will still stop the game to kill momentum, like they do at all levels. IFAB mugs act like they've never played the game.
Report ----you-have-to-laugh--- November 4, 2025 6:21 PM GMT
Teams playing energetic press stop game to get a rest
and get back into position.

They want the time added on,

and as per lurka, they want
timeout to stifle opposition.

The recent law change to speed up goalies getting ball
back into play quicker has been a big success, so
you'd think they'd be keen to use similar to speed up
goal kicks, throw ins, and free kicks... Rather than
allow the delays and add on time, or stop clock as would be.

that's the whole  point they can stop it as much as they like but even it takes 3 hrs we still get 35mins play ew, the clock is stopped every time the balls not in play, what's the point in stopping play/wasting time if your still playing 35 mins

Just answering your question!!!
Report Angela Rebecchi November 6, 2025 4:18 PM GMT
Play 30 minute halves (if currently it's 28 in play). Blow whistle the minute the ball goes out after the 30 minute timer (like in rugby). Been saying this for decades. A very obvious solution.
Report duffy November 6, 2025 4:30 PM GMT
One thing is for sure, the time it takes for throw ins, free kicks corners to be taken is far too long and has become a blight on the game, something definitely needs to be done.
Report ----you-have-to-laugh--- November 6, 2025 4:38 PM GMT
Long throws allow an age for defenders to get forward

Ref won't allow same time for defending team to get
ball back into play from throw in.

Just saying.
Report Aspro November 6, 2025 5:26 PM GMT
As I said at the start, I'm all for it. 30-35 minutes is fine by me. It's rare, but on occasions the Americans have got it sussed.
Report ----you-have-to-laugh--- November 6, 2025 5:28 PM GMT
If you can't get ball into play after 20 seconds give
it to other team.

You won't need a time keeper.
Report LoyalHoncho November 6, 2025 5:29 PM GMT
True.
Report Aspro November 6, 2025 5:35 PM GMT
Rather see the clock. Who's gonna keep counting 20 seconds?

According to Copilot there are an average of 35 throw-ins per game in the PL... that's a lot of counting for a dear old ref to consider.
Report ----you-have-to-laugh--- November 6, 2025 5:40 PM GMT
Ref can count to 20 when ball is out of play

Usually has 2 or 3 watches

May as well use them.
Report Aspro November 6, 2025 5:42 PM GMT
Time wasting is obliterated with the clock.

Imagine a team, 1-0 up with 1 minute to play. They get a throw-in, high up the pitch, and they know they can virtually cut that time in half with just one stall.

I think we're gonna have to agree to disagree on this one yhtl.
Report ----you-have-to-laugh--- November 6, 2025 5:53 PM GMT
No, I'm still with you on the clock, that's great.

Then we need to stop game delay on top of the clock.
Report ----you-have-to-laugh--- November 6, 2025 5:55 PM GMT
My players are tired, let's take 3 minutes at throw in.

The other team are getting on top, let's take 2 minutes
at this goal kick.

The ref counting down goalie hanging onto ball has
been a spectacular success
Report duffy November 6, 2025 5:58 PM GMT
Stopping the clock definitely won't work, it might mean that you get the full amount of play but it will make the messing about inbetween even more longer as the sides can just turn around to the ref when hurried along and say, what are you worried about, the clock is stopped isn't it.

It's not just about the preservation of the actual playing time, if it takes an exorbitant amount of time to achieve it then it has failed.
Report Aspro November 6, 2025 5:59 PM GMT
Yeah, following you now yhtl. A time countdown does work under those circumstances.
Report duffy November 6, 2025 6:06 PM GMT
You can't have repeated countdowns everytime the ball goes out of play though either, it would be farcical and what you'll start to see more of is pretendee injuries which does seem to hamstrung officials.
Report Aspro November 6, 2025 6:08 PM GMT
If the players want to play all night then that's a relevant point duffy, but would it really be that bad?

Debateable though.
Report ----you-have-to-laugh--- November 6, 2025 6:55 PM GMT
If they want a player treated on pitch then if there's no
contact that's caused it then give the other team the ball.
Report lurka November 7, 2025 1:09 AM GMT
The non-stop nature of football is part of the game. It's a contest of fitness/endurance too. We've already had VAR significantly impacting this.
I suspect they want to eventually have it like US sports with 4 periods and a lot more ad time, that's how they can get more from tv cos. The americans own a huge chunk of the game now and they've already tried the Super League with US banks backing it. Local fans are not that important to them any more and are often viewed as pests. Boehly has a stake in an unauthorised ticket reselling site selling tickets to foreign fans.

The fact that the way IFAB want to go about it doesn't disincentivise time wasting makes me more suspicious of this. More stoppages/periods leads to more tv revenue and much longer games. 35 mins per half is far too long, around 30 is about right for the ball being in-play. Or 4 periods of 15 mins which is the direction this is going.
Report duffy November 7, 2025 3:44 PM GMT
What we've also seen this season with the proliferation of the long throw is the accompanied fuzzy nostalgic warmth, harking back to the good old days that has come along with it, this in itself means that these instances are going to be tolerated more by officials as they sense that it is enjoyed by the masses.
Report nineteen points November 7, 2025 5:11 PM GMT
yes duffy your right,if the truth was told theres nothing more boring or tedious than them.
Report duffy November 7, 2025 5:35 PM GMT
In all honesty I don't mind them it's just the drag whilst we wait for them to be taken is the problem. The free kick is now another "event" where the combatants are trying to make out that they are playing out some sort of highly technical NFL style play, particularly from Arsenal where we even get the cut to the touchline where we see the set piece coach trying to look important as he waves his arms about whilst instructing the free kick taker to, in a technical way you understand, kick it into the box whilst "his", because for that precious moment in time they are very much, his players, all rush en masse toward the ball.

This piece symphonic artwork all takes an absolute age to play out and bores the bl00dy pants off most of us.
Report ----you-have-to-laugh--- November 7, 2025 5:44 PM GMT
Yeah, and trying to build pressure on defensive team, whilst
creating a positive mental attitude for attacking team.

The others will catch on, but take the advantage whilst it is there.

The set-piece coach at Arsenal is important, evidently. Sunderland were the ones doing the long-throws today. Arsenal's thing is corners, Brentford, Palace and Sunderland are much 'worse' for long-throws. It's the less possession and territorially dominant sides that do them most.

Report duffy November 9, 2025 2:10 AM GMT
Arsenal were attempting long throws, Gabriel came up for them in the first half for sure, the snag was that to be successful at a long throw you have to, by definition have someone able to throw it a long way and Arsenal had Rice who couldnt.Grin
Report LoyalHoncho November 10, 2025 10:26 AM GMT
Good point.  Long-throwing isn’t easy, I.e. not everyone can do it effectively.  In short it is a speciality.
It is also much, much more entertaining than a five yard short throw.  Surely that is its second virtue.
Report 1st time poster November 10, 2025 11:42 AM GMT
what i don't understand with long throws is, in Brentford game, POPE can jump and with hands is 4ft taller than outfield players so instead of standing behind players at near post, why doesn't he stand in front of them , even longest thrower in game isnt going to launch it over keepers head
Report duffy November 10, 2025 1:17 PM GMT
Don't know but I would imagine that if the keeper was standing in front of the near post he'd feel out of position with the goal behind him unguarded by him, also what's to stop another opposing player plonking himself in front of him still, also if he was standing in front of the schmozzle behind him and the throw was then quickly taken short and then crossed in he'd now be scrambling past a crowd of players trying to get back into position in his goal.
Report ----you-have-to-laugh--- November 10, 2025 1:50 PM GMT
There's no offside until attacking team touch ball.

Lots of blocking, and plenty have thrown ball
past near post.

Same as defending a corner, but ball coming from
a more difficult angle to defend, albeit at a slower pace.
Report duffy November 10, 2025 2:17 PM GMT
None of these throws are like Rory Delap's, the key to his was that he was able to throw it in flat and with pace, flat being the real key because it's harder to get something on it from a defensive stance, the loopy ones are much easier to deal with.
Report 1st time poster November 10, 2025 2:38 PM GMT

why not train players to pump more garryowns into boxes? why not train players to shield your player with a ring of 6ft 10in 24st team mates when he has the ball so he can run or even walk into the box right up to the line then poke it in?
