32 years after failing to qualify for the World Cup in America, we finally make it over the Atlantic to play in one.
According to google it was the 2-0 loss to Holland that sealed our fate in qualification

How did that lot manage just 1 pt from 6 against Norway in qualification, 1pt from 6 v Holland (probably same level) and draw with Poland ?
I was knee-high to a grasshopper so don't remember this period, but on paper looks like a fairly quality side that should of qualified.
Who was the biggest hinderance, Graham Taylor or Carlton Palmer ?

Carlton Palmer was a decent player at what he did, always got a bad rap, but he put the yards in, OK not quite as good as Declan Rice today but every team needs one.

Played quite vs Holland that night, couldn’t put it in the net though,’Koeman scored from outside the box for their 2nd I think, and controversy about their first goal. Can’t recall the details long time ago

Palmer wasn't the only weak link in that team, imho. Ince rarely produced at that level. And Lee Sharpe was never at the level anyway. Could say the same about Dorigo as well.

A very tough group Shocking refereeing decisions in the crunch game in Holland Injuries to key players. Shearer was missing in a few iirc. Gazza clearly was in that game Overrated players past their best. Probably a lack of professionalism, complacency and alcohol |

I don't remember too much but the things I do recall were the Norwegian commentator famously reeling off names like Churchill and Thatcher after the defeat in Norway. Was it David Platt? being hauled down when clean through on goal by Koeman, in the most blatant red card that never was, and England conceding in the first few seconds away in San Marino in their final match, when I believe they still had a snowball's chance of qualifying if other results went their way

It's a comedy classic. Taylor open hatred of Gascoigne, Phil Neal's sycophancy, players have no idea what Taylor is talking about, that formation against Sweden, Taylor's gradual disintegration: "I woke up with the usual pyjamas wet through."

Having press there full time, agitating to improve
documentary didn't help, and other clubs have gone down same route since with similar results. Holland game was a joke, ref could probably retire and do a tour after that. We were not that good anyway. Do I not like that. |

was saying that the Norwegian commentator classic was 1981, not the 1993 game. Much less of a shock in '93 as Norway easily beat Italy at home in '91 and got a draw at Wembley.

so it was. England had a decent team then too. Went out unbeaten in the 82 WC with 3 wins over France Czechoslvakia and Kuwait and 2 draws against Spain and Germany. Keegan and Brooking came on as subs in the final game (don't think either were fit) against Spain that they needed to win by 2-1 at least. Iirc they never looked like scoring and the game petered out into a 0-0 draw. France, who England outplayed in the first group stage, ended up playing Austria and N. Ireland

Turnips 1 Swedes 2 Do I not like that. Ally’s Army Austin Allegro adverts. 1974, 1978 and 1994 Football fans of a certain age remember the pain and humiliation so well that I find the vitriol directed at Southgate incredibly stupid. Southgate may not have been the best and yes we should have won something with the luck he had but his real gift was the organisation of the complete England setup from schoolboy level. We are producing more and more kwality young international footballers with confidence when they get their chance. Southgate had a part to play in that and it should not be forgotten. |
