Gary Neville has sparked a furious online backlash after his comments on the Manchester synagogue attack descended into a rant about 'angry middle-aged white men' dividing Britain by raising Union flags.

The former Manchester United and England defender made the comments around 24 hours after worshippers at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation were attacked by Syrian-born terrorist Jihad Al-Shamie.

Neville, 50, began his video, which he posted to LinkedIn on Friday, by saying: 'Seeing the news last night and the news this morning dominated by the horrific attacks within the Jewish community, just a mile from here.'

But after pausing to take a breath as he walked down the street, Neville bizarrely switched his attention to the raising of flags - a movement called 'Operation Raise the Colours' which has gripped swathes of Britain this year.

He continued: 'When I was driving to Salford City last night, going down Littleton Road, I seen probably 50 or 60 Union Jack flags. And on the way back I went down the parallel road, Bury New Road, which has got the Jewish community right at its heart and they’re out on the streets, defiant, not hiding or in fear.

'I just kept thinking as I was driving home last night that we’re all being turned on each other. And the division that’s being created is absolutely disgusting. Mainly created by angry, middle-aged white men, who know exactly what they’re doing.

'Funnily enough on one of my development sites last week there was a Union Jack flag put up and I took it down instantly.'

The former defender, who now works as a pundit for Sky Sports when away from his £100million business empire spanning hospitality, property development and media, quickly moved to hit back at any claims he was being unpatriotic by doing so

He said: 'I played for my country 85 times, I love my country. I love Manchester and I love England, but I’ve been building in this city for 15 to 20 years and there’s no one put a Union Jack flag up in the last 15 to 20 years, so why do you have to put one up now?

'Quite clearly it’s sending a message to everybody that there’s something you don’t like.

'The Union Jack flag being used in a negative fashion is not right and I’m a proud supporter of England, Great Britain, of our country, and I’ll champion it anywhere in the world as one of the greatest places to live.

'But I think we need to check ourselves, bring ourselves back to a neutral point, because we’re being pulled right and left and we don’t need to be, at all.'

While many agreed with Neville's sentiments that Britain should be on a united front, many in the Jewish community slammed him for going off on the tangent on a video he had titled 'Thoughts on the horrible scenes in Manchester'.

Barrie Taube, who works as a managing director for several property and finance companies, thanked Neville for his support of British Jews but insisted that the division is not being caused by 'middle-aged white men'.

He said: 'It's caused by antisemitic comments by bands such as Kneecap and other influential figures who give this legitimacy so that young people think this is OK.  It is about education, stopping hate marches and acts of kindness.

'The Labour Government which you champion so much has a lot to answer for.'

Mr Taube added that he even had to wear a bulletproof vest while working on security at his synagogue in Hale, saying: 'This is what life is like now for Jews in the UK.'

Another Jewish Briton, Oli Kristall, who works for a technology company in Leeds, said: 'Gary - I love your views on football but - respectfully, the start of your video was great but then it turned into tackling a totally wrong issue.

After speaking briefly about Thursday's attack on Jews in Manchester, Neville switched his attention to the raising of flags - a movement called 'Operation Raise the Colours' which has gripped swathes of Britain this year (as seen above)

After speaking briefly about Thursday's attack on Jews in Manchester, Neville switched his attention to the raising of flags - a movement called 'Operation Raise the Colours' which has gripped swathes of Britain this year (as seen above)

'What have your views on Union Jack flags or "English white men" got to do with targeted murders on Jews yesterday in Manchester? It is totally wrong to turn yesterday’s murders into a way of making a point about something else!'

Annette Gordon, who has worked as a TV producer for major broadcasters in Britain such as ITV and Channel 4, replied to Neville's post to say he was following 'an approved narrative that is basically pretty biased'.

The producer asked: 'Is it really just "white middle-aged men"? You've kind of fallen into the trap that you say we are all in which is pointing the finger at one group and thereby polarising the argument. It is way more complex than that.'

Others who disagreed with Neville's sentiments simply urged him to 'Stick to Football', in a reference to the title of the podcast he hosts.

Neville concluded his video by recalling his footballing memories at Old Trafford, where he shared a dressing room with British players as well as Africans, Asians, Americans and Europeans.

But in another twist, the former footballer then added: 'Brexit has had a devastating impact on this country and the messaging is getting extremely dangerous.

'All these idiots out there spreading hate speech and abuse in any form, we must stop promoting them.

'We must stop elevating our voices towards them and it needs to stop now, and get back to a country of peace, love, harmony and become a team again.'

My disagreement with Neville is that it isn't the middle aged white blokes. They're just the useful idiots being used as pawns.

Go behind that. It's the global and extremely well-funded group of white supremacists. They're the ones paying for these flags, and paying Tommy a small fortune to organise his minions to put them up. And it's not because these foreign white supremacists love England so much. I mean, you'd have to be slug-level thick to think that. It's simply to sow more division, to make minorities feel unwelcome or undeserving. I pity the poor fools who look at the flags and think "well where's the harm?" Christ, imagine how naive! And there are loads of people like that. People need to get unglued from the cancer coming through their phones.

Mad though that some think we all play on a level playing field. Look at mes's article and the conflation of Neville's ire at the flags with anti-semitism. Some people on the right just aren't interested in questioning things like that. They just like to buy into the idea that 2+2=5 in cases like this. That the current Israeli government inviting a known and evidenced anti-semite to Israel is a GOOD THING and people who protest against evidenced and independently and expertly-judged genocide and ethnic cleansing are nothing but racists who  are BAD. That they don't question the money and influence behind all of this, and the effort that goes into influencing people every moment of every day. And yes it goes both ways, but we've reached the stage where the number of organisations reaching the conclusion of Israel's war crimes is legion, and the notion that the accusers are simply believing Hamas is obviously a joke. While on the other hand, you don't have to dig very far to see the links of the white supremacist movements, the massive influence from the likes of Musk, Thiel and Vance in spreading their rhetoric and how their own (deeply-held) anti-semitism is only being veiled as it's convenient to align and target the muslims first.

Again, this isn't highbrow, difficult or deeply buried stuff. If you can't see it, it's because you've decided not to see it.

Well firstly, we haven't been flooded. If you want to use third world specifically, then the number from there is actually very small.

Secondly, the real reason is because it's capitalists and their demand for the cheap labour. It's not actually politicians at all, apart from their remarkable ability to be hoodwinked and coerced. But it's the businesses that are applying for work visas that are bringing people over.

You can draw deeper arguments about education, training and opportunities for our own population, you can ask about whether we've been suckered into thinking paying so little to get our takeaway delivered is fine, and into thinking whether the firms offering services like this are doing it because they're just lovely or if maybe it's because no-one else will take the job and their profits would be severely affected. Or you can forget all that, let the people influencing and making those decisions get off scot free, and instead blame the poor people coming here and looking to get a job to pay the bills before they move on to something better.

Depends on what you want to and not want to see I suppose.

Yes the insane number of visas are driven by big business (and universities that basically sell visas). The 'Migration Advisory Committee' is  a straightforward big business lobbying operation.

The OSBR rules for government borrowing practically require mass immigration.

But politicians either created these quangos or consider them indispensable.

And the illegal immigration, while smaller in number, just seems insane to the majority of people. 60,000 a year just barging in, completely destitute, and they end up in HMOs that are converted from houses that British people have been evicted from. Every time one of them commits a crime people ask why was he here? And the answer is refugee convention and ECHR.

In Ireland we have 32,000 registered NGOs and the government has funded them to the tune of almost €7bn a year for the past 5 years. Non-Governmental Organisations.

They lobby for open borders and things like hate-speech laws. Then the government listens to them and bases policy on their lobbying. Completely astroturfed.

I'm sure it's similar in Britain but not as laughable.

One is one too many - I'm not talking about genuine refugees or asylum seekers. But we are letting people get on planes with passports and they get off without them. Refuse every single one - vast majority are criminals. We are letting people in from eg Ukraine and other 'unsafe' countries and they are going back to visit relatives and returning. That is not a genuine asylum seeker or refugee. Not one of them goes back if they are. Then we have people coming undocumented from 'safe' countries and letting them in. One of them is one too many. The rules on asylum state that you must seek asylum in the first 'safe' place, so ALL the asylum seekers from boats on France and the EU should be refused.
Report lurka October 5, 2025 11:46 PM BST
In Ireland we have the EU migration pact - this was signed up to by politicians without putting it to the people. Again, there is a reason for that - they knew what the answer would be.

The UK it's actually worse because you're not part of the EU any more. You know... Brexit which was about 'taking back control' of your borders. Yet you are taking boats from the EU.

And you think the majority of people are in favour of all of this? The government are not hoodwinked, they know exactly what they're doing. You've been hoodwinked into thinking most people are in favour of this. It's more like 80/20 against. The government know this well.
Report PorcupineorPineapple October 5, 2025 11:52 PM BST
And the answer is refugee convention and ECHR.

Isn't the answer actually poverty or y'know any of the other myriad reasons british people might commit crimes. Or do non-brits simply think differently now? Cos I'm pretty sure the huge majority of immigrants in this country are actually not criminals and no-one seems to bother to ask why so many of them decide to not commit crime. We seem to have moved on from the lie of them taking our jobs and our benefits to them all being criminals, and loads of people seem to have not noticed or thought to ask if they're being lied to. Apparemtly immigrants are just bad, and if you disagree or think it might be a bit more nuanced than that you're un-British or anti-semitic or something equally stupid.

Again though, if you don't see that it's probably because you don't want to see that.

And if so, it's absolutely pointless me being here. Cos your mind's made up and you're completely closed to anything that doesn't confirm the narrative you've swallowed.

So why bother? Waste of time as usual. Right. Not sure why I ended up on here again. Blame it on the whskey. A little more nuanced than the mad troll politics forum on here but still... Anyway, back to the real offline world tomorrow. Ciao tutti.

Of course the moderator by in large has no idea of context even when reviewing posts as spats between posters linger from thread to thread in some cases.

Anyway

It's laughable to think Neville will be sacked, he works for Comcast who own Sky, ever since they've taken over Sky their recruitment has gone full throttle overdrive into diversity and inclusion from lead presenters to side presenters to match day reporters to pundits, hence the canning of all these middle aged white guys on soccer Saturday replaced by mixed raced lesbian Sue Smith and plastic Gangasta', Clinton Morrison, from Lads favourites Natalie Sawyer and Kirsty Gallagher to Jessica Creighton (one with the birds next barnet) and Bela Shah, and the likes of Micah Ricahrds and Sturridge becoming more prominent on big match days. Clear box ticking though soccer Saturday definitely became stale and boring but it went backwards in terms of quality of pundit, Thompson/Nichols/Le Tissier where either winners at the very top level or high calibre players so you could but into what they say and had great chemistry -  Dawson, Smith, Kris Boyd and Morrison are massive comedowns and the show is now unwatchable, wooden personalities who were all bang average players.

So Neville knows full well he is placing himself on safe ground, he's not going after the minorities that his employer has bent over backwards to integrate into their organisation making them the faces and voices of Sky. Going after minorities is the final death knell in anyone's media career.

When they say the truth is usually somewhere in the middle this is a prime example, there are many who genuinely feel the country is becoming less British because of immigration reflected in multi ethnic schools, towns and work places and this flag thing is their backlash, but then there are other who are outright racists who want to blame immigrants for everything - usually the state of their own lives.

Incidentally, Last I read in May Sky's subscriber base and profit levels had plummeted, if they ever lost Premier League football which seems inevitable at the end of their latest broadcast deal in 2029, they are finished.

Kind Regards.

The response to logical argument is always labelling by the people trying to justify madness like this because they have no rational argument to support their insane policies.

The latest one is 'far-right'. If you are in favour of tearing up decades if not centuries old immigration policies and things like borders, that is more liberal than at any time in history. That means you have moved as far left as ever and everyone else is far to the right. It also means that the centre is moved a large chunk left as it is the average. This means that people who were formerly centre left are now centre right and people who were centre right are now medium right. This means that on the issue of mass-immigration, 80+% of people will are now right of centre despite their politics not changing at all.

Clearly people from 3rd world countries have far higher rates of offending.

The next time they were doing the overlap, Keane was bi*ching and moaning about Thornley without naming him.

Malay its not a stupid term, of course it doesn't mean you cannot drink champagne (now that really is silly to suggest).
The term has been around for over a century and could hardly fit the likes of Gary Neville any better :

The term 'champagne socialist', often used pejoratively, refers to the perceived hypocrisy of liberal middle-class people who advocate for socialist ideals while continuing to enjoy their own affluent lifestyles.

It could be expected that any accusations of hypocrisy when it comes to middle-class socialism would be coming chiefly from the political right. Yet some of the most vociferous attacks of champagne socialism have emanated from left-wing voices.

A notable example is Ramsay MacDonald, the first Labour prime minister of the United Kingdom. He would be called a traitor to his party’s egalitarian principles throughout his time in office, with critics lambasting his hobnobbing with the British elite.

Wonderful irony there

What is ironic is Neville talked about division but all these comments have done is cause division, people follow him for football, football being the greatest form of escapism from people's everyday lives, yet he keeps dragging them into the sphere and swamp of the convoluted, devious and downright deranged world of murky politics, thanks to the instantaneity of news foisted upon us in a heartbeat via social and mass media, all of our ears are then drowned in this nonsense whether we like it or not. Further irony is it's international fortnight with where more flags will be waved around than usual which'll only help to drag the story out longer than it should be.

Gary Lineker essentially and eventually lost his job for branching out and venturing down the same divisive political path Neville is, either he is also comfortable with the thought of losing his position and platform in Broadcasting or more likely thinks it's completely safe ground talking about angry white men given he's working for Comcast who've replaced a lot of white workers with those from multicultural backgrounds in recent years, which in a lot of instances was correct as it didn't really reflect the differing shades of skin and backgrounds of it viewers given the diverseness of the country, it was near all white, in other instances moving on former high claibre football players come pundits with low quality nobodies like Morrison, Dawson and a female pro nobody has seen play, wasn't.

He should in my opinion stick to football, if he wants to be a political activist he should do it full time, then I could switch over to LBC or TalkRadio to listen to him if I choose and where these sort of opinions belong.

By the way, he's not a champagne socialists, he's too tight to buy champagne.

Kind Regards.

Saw a lot of lefty MPs and hangers on saying about how the flags being put up were not welcoming to our overseas friends, racist etc
Labour Party conference last week... All waving little Union Jack and cross of St George flags... Couldn't make it up
