supposedly was because of concern over his system and fitting the players they had - plus maybe some reluctance to pay the large cost of releasing him from his Sporting contract...

I don't think it went that far. Slot was always first choice. But Amorim was in contention and what counted against him was his system and they thought it would cost a fortune to build a team to fit his style of play.

Can anyone explain what Amorim's 'system' is, and why the squads of Liverpool & Manchester United, both of which cost about £1 Billion to assemble, would not be able to implement it ?

In theory it's a patient building through the lines 3-4-2-1 attempting to create overloads in the final third at it's most basic, changing to a fast counter attacking side when stealing possession in their own half and often high pressing and aggressively counter pressing except away from home against top sides..
..plenty of more nuanced critiques of it knocking around on youtube (some nonsense but some good ones as well).. the over reliance on wing backs to be key attacking threat in a league of this quality and to have a top class MF 2 that cover both athleticism and a QB'ing ball player who is a natural to the role are a bit easier said than done.. Utd certainly don't have top class wing backs (Dorgu has looked pretty poor to me and having seen them play the role neither Mazroui or Dalot look very natural to it or able to adjust to it, same for Amad though for different reasons) and don't have either or the things required in CMF currently...(one of the reasons so many were concerned about the apparent moving of Bruno to a deeper role and no new addition to upgrade the Casemiro/Ugarte complimentary role.. |

2 massive problems with wing backs.
They are jack of all trades masters of none.it might work in a weak league but not at top level.you need top class right and left backs and top class right and left wingers.with wing backs you get neither. Plus a weaker team can just play 2 wingers high up the pitch,thus meaning your wing backs have to stay back. |

Your wingbacks also need to have the athleticism of a sprinter as well as the endurance of an Ethiopian distance runner as they will be in theory involved in all of the play all of the time.

So best have 4, so you can replace them in game.
What did amorin spend his monets on? He's also flogged off quite a few decent wide forwards below market value to fit the system. And has a potential star in mainoo who he doesn't seem to fancy. It's possibly a dreadful signing as he was possibly the worst manager to come into that squad, whilst possibly being a decent squad, and a decent manager. |

Seems to me that the biggest difference between his system and the similar way Glasner plays is that Amorim's players are shuffling about in different roles within the system throughout the match so they don't know what they're doing there and what they're supposed to do when they are there, which must discombobulate their minds, it happens when he brings on his subs, the system is rigid but he's asking the player to be flexible within the system and he doesn't have the players to do that. To exaggerate to emphasise a point, you wouldn't ask a plumber to do the job of an electrician or an electrician to do the job of a carpenter or a carpenter to do the job of a roofer, he doesn't have jack of all trade personnel types within his squad to make his system a success. Nearly all of his players are strictly, 10's or strictly 6's of strictly full backs but he keeps putting square pegs into round holes.
They highlighted a good example of this yesterday where Mainoo and Yoro came on for Maguire and Ugarte, De Ligt had to shuffle from the right side of the back 3 to the centre and Yoro took De Ligt's spot, but then Mount came on for Shaw (with 10 minutes left) and Yoro was shuffled out to the left of the back 3 where Shaw was (who is strictly a left back anyway), Mount took Mbuemo's position at number 10, Mbuemo moved to right wing back where Dalot was and Dalot fell back to take Yoro's place in the left of the back 3, where De Ligt originally was, but is now playing centre. 5 minutes left of the game he brings on Zirkzee for Dorgu - Mount then shuffles over to the left wing back position and Zirkzee takes Mount's number 10 role, in which he played for just 5 minutes. He has not won 2 games in a row in the Premier League in the last 12 months, at Manchester United, with all the money they've spent. Apparently if they sack him before November he gets a much bigger pay off than if they sacked him after, so I imagine skinflint Jim Ratcliff will grin and bear it til then before replacing him, which btw going by body language, Amorim would be more than happy about, he wants out. I think it's also ability of coaching and also of spotting and using good players, more than just using an unsuitable system. Nearly 12 months on, Utd players are still getting caught out of position, look lost and they#re a very easy team to play against. He simply hasn't managed to get them to play his system properly.
And, for all the financial disparity, the current Palace team is better than Utd's. They have a great spine and all of Henderson, Guehi, Wharton, Pino and Mateta would stroll into Utd's teams for starters. |

Yes, I think for a large part the "system" is a smoke screen and it serves to give the players an undeserved pass, who thinks United would be tearing up trees playing a 442? or 433?, heads would still drop as soon as they were faced with adversity, Ugarte still wouldn't be able to pass a ball in a straight line, Maguire and Casemiro still wouldn't be able to run, Bayindir still wouldn't be able to come for a cross.
An alteration of system might paper over some cracks but the overall lack of quality and togetherness of the players on the pitch would still be exposed. What we see this season, although arguably worse than of recent years is not new, we've been bad employing all other systems in the past too. |

What was Slot bumping his gums about with the touchline official. He just would not let it go whatever it was. Looked lucky to escape referee censure.
