Nobody wants to see a red card, Football is supposed to 11 v 11, it should be 11 v 11 at all times, from start to finish.
Teams a man down park the bus, it usually turns into a turgid match with neutrals switching off.
Fans don't want to see
Broadcasters don't want to see it
Sponsors don't want to see it
What makes the red card rule even more more outdated, is the player sent off can miss up to 3 whole matches, even arguing with the ref (dissent) can be as much as 2 matches, 2 yellows is one match suspension.
A team a man down has already been punished, their chances of scoring have been significantly reduced, why are you punishing the team for another 3 whole matches when they've already been punished in the actual match in which he's been sent off in ? it makes no sense.
Any player sent off should be replaced by another player on the bench - unless the team has already used up all 5 subs thus keeping the game 11 v 11.
Any player that is sent off for 2 yellows should receive no further punishment after the game.
Any player that is sent off for a straight red even for serious foul play should receive a 1 game ban max.
The only red card rule that I agree with is a 6 game ban for gobbing at another player, in fact I'd given them a 15 game ban, nothing worse that that on a football pitch.
The 2006 Champions League final a great example, the biggest game in World football ruined by an early red card.
Lehman sent off
-Arsenal have to play with 10 men for 75 minutes
-Arsenal have to bring on their 2nd choice keeper
-Arsenal have to replace Pires to bring on that 2nd choice keeper
Triple punishment for one singe action.
With this new rule, it would still have been 11 v 11 and Pires would have to have come off making for a much better and fairer final.
Current Red card rule is archaic and needs to be abolished, but at the moment, it's probably a bit too forward thinking for the FA and UEFA.
However, given how much money is in football now, how broadcasters in particular are paying for the game running well into the billions and how they want to extract as much value as humanely possible out of the product that they've paid through the nose for, I'd imagine it's a matter of time, when and not if. The yanks in particular are all about entertainment and they own most of our clubs, the PL is growing exponentially in the huge money market that is states year on year so think this new rule will probably come in by 2030, with a bit of luck.
No more 11 v 10's or 11 v 9's or 10 v 10's, that's not football people.

Every reason wrong.
Player worth 100 million gets leg broken by a reserve in first minute,just swap player. Or break legs of best 5 players against you,and then win game. Maybe swap a player for dissent,to stop players like mascherana deliberately getting sent off for Liverpool v United,chasing ref to demand red card.whilst amo racing boss still held 3rd party contract.on him as gerrard stared in disbelief. |

It’s down to the refs.go easy early on,force the South Americans to stand out as blatant. It’s giddy refs..quick on the cards,then let the player justify his actions. Players tend to protect each other,no one wants to break a leg,as they know their leg will get broken, Top players are valuable assets,they need protection not only for their careers,but for the value to the club. How do you mitigate for a player,determined to get sent off.he won’t break a leg of fellow pro,but would get sent off for swearing at ref. If it’s late challenge ,accident etc.then could be a rule . If it looks deliberate,then review it later and ban the player. There must be a system to make it not worth it. Massive games ruined by 1 player,could be solved to stop it happening. |

We can argue about what a sent off players subsequent punishment is, but it should always be 11 v 11, that's football, 11 v 10 is not football.
With current rules the worst player on the pitch can still try and take out the best player, the player may be sent off but his team parks the bus with 10 defenders instead of the original 4 or 5 they started the game with At least with my rules the game will always be much more watchable. I don't think any modern day player at the top level especially, with sponsorship deals, international football aspirations and microscopic media attention that may affect his family life, is going to be a sacrificial lamb for the team by winding back the clock to the 1970's and torpedoing the oppositions best player in to Row Z to get himself sent off anyway. That's just pie in the sky stuff, for the birds. They want to keep their place in the team and not let the next cab off the rank challenging them for their place by missing a game. Bad form, you're out, injury, you're out, suspension, you're out, then it can sometimes be a long way back into the side to get your place back, that's generally the way football is particularly for the lesser talented players in the squad. 5 worst players from team A , injure 5 best players from team B ,to even teams up. Crazy rule. Build in the risk to career injuries,500 mill worth of talent,career ending tackles,by san mareino postmen. Telling a ref in the first minute,he’s a cheat,and hasn’t got a dad,maybe have a rule for this,breaking a players leg is a different case. What about pro foul,clean through on goal,hacks player down, Think the rule is ok as it is,but refs need to cautious of yellow cards early on. I agree a team should be able to replace a sent off player, and it should always be 11 v 11.
Don't agree with maximum 1 game ban for leg breaking fouls, or elbowing someone in the head. Arguing for that undermines your argument. |

yes it's a fair point, I was thinking about most straight red cards which are deemed as 'serious foul play', for example, how is Soucek's red card yesterday really worthy of being banned for 3 whole matches? He was trying to win the ball but didn't and connected with the players calf in the end. So the player and the club is punished for 3 matches for that? Even Gordon's red card should have been 1 max as you could also clearly see he tried to pull out but was too late, a rush of blood to the head, not trying to cause serious harm, but it's currently not taking into account.
It's rare to have cases at the extreme end, like Keane deliberately trying to end Haaland's career, those are multi game bans but the majority are clearly no more worthy of just a 1 match suspension Even with two yellows equaling one game ban is seriously dated, Rice beginning of last season was given a second yellow for slightly kicking the ball away, sent off, missed North London Derby, one of TV's biggest games, everyone loses out. never been able to work out die linke if you're a ladies man, prefer lady boys or like to dress up as a lady, one minutes you're intricately describing you fantasies during Euro 2024 involving being knocked out with Grealish and Ronaldo sitting in the dressing room with in their Y-fronts, the next minute you want women in tight shorts, or maybe you just enjoy a more bohemian lifestyle and swing both ways

I completely agree with the OP.
The problem is that without controversial reffing decisions football would be a very boring game. VAR, soft pens, Fergie time all add to the rotten mix of the modern game. ANd lets face facts they are all there to keep the smaller clubs like Burnley in their place while big spending Liverpool can pretend they are the kings of the world while spunking hundreds of millions on over-rated prima donnas. But hey thats the world we live in. Innit great? |
