I was hitching on the M6 in the 90's and was picked up by an odd couple. We talked about gambling and where it was going at the time. They both said it was a mugs game - how I've proved Fred and Denise so very wrong.

I thought from the thread title it was likely a brassneck post.

I remember an article in the Racing Post after the switch to GPT, rather than tax on turnover (maybe about 2000/2001) from a supposed professional gambler, arguing that if you weren't a professional gambler already you weren't going to be one/hadn't got what it takes (at least that was the impression it left on me).  I recall thinking how full of himself he appeared in the article and how his argument was completely flawed.

Not having had full time employment since 2002, I often question how difficult was it, and think back to that article in the Racing Post by Peter Thomas.  (I just Googled him to see if IIRC, and I even recognise his picture a quarter of a century later.

At the time snowy i did manage to offend the entire student union and their silly 'fetish' night by going (basically as the story was breaking) as the victims of the Wests and saying my fetish was necrophilia. There was a plane crash a few days before and we were going to go as them so  basically had all the props ready. They refused to let us in but I appealed to the other necrophiliacs in the room and we won the day.
How I've proved those non gambling non necrophiliac idiots wrong over the years!
