They've opened up a can of worms now with that rule about the wall, going forward now every time a goal is scored from a free kick or from a subsequent play they'll have to look back at the free kick, just like looking back at a keeper at a pen to check he's on his line.
By:
duffy
When: 17 Aug 25 19:42
What about when the wall breaks apart as the kicker approaches and lessens the gap between the end of the wall and the nearest attacker.....very messy

Will likely become even more of a farce as the season continues.
By:

When: 17 Aug 25 20:04
They would have been better off disallowing the goal for a foul, we'd have all moved on by now, I predict that in the coming days someone is going to dig out all free kicks scored in the last few years and identify encroaching attackers that should have chalked off the goal.

Since the "One metre" rule was made, in 2019, there has been 2,287 Premier league games since.

The Palace goal, disallowed because of this ruling, is the very first time it has been enforced.

It's tough to take as a win would have been absolutely fantastic for us.

Sad

It was a blatant case of pushing.
By:
s.kenbo
When: 18 Aug 25 17:28
Then disallow the goal for that. Not for some rule which has stood for years but never been enforced.

When: 18 Aug 25 17:37
Absolutely S.Kenbo.

This is going to get messy this season for sure because of this.
Even more use of VAR and God only knows how much extra time will be needed to add on.

I'd love to hear the audio from VAR when they came to this decision, rule or not there needed to be someone in the room who immediately recognized the implications going forward.....sadly there wasn't anyone with any foresight in the room.
By:

appalling that the audio of the conversation between on-field ref and VAR isn't issued in real time

In rugby union internationals you can hear everything from the ref to VAR officials for every incident that needs looking at. Works absolutely perfectly and everyone knows what's happening. So it would be a simple thing to add that to football.

PGMO made me laugh when they announced the exciting innovation that the Refs would explain VAR decisions to the crowd.

The NFL have been doing that since 1986
By:

When: 18 Aug 25 21:44
But will it improve the spectacle?  And, if “VAR” is making decisions and over-ruling refs on the pitch, why aren’t they making the announcements?
I never, ever thought I would say such a thing but poor refs.
By:
duffy
When: 19 Aug 25 14:46
The reason we aren't allowed to hear all the communication between ref and VAR is because they are aware that in reality it is at best a very messy affair that will come across horribly, particularly so when you hear them say something controversial, the mere fact that the VAR would be aware that the whole footballing world is listening in would render the pressure that this would create on an already inadequate system operated by inadequate operatives completely unworkable.

It would sharpen them up if it was televised live.

Not only that but it educates the viewing public
to the laws of the game, and which law they are
applying.

Cricket and rugby do it beautifully, so no real excuses.
By:

In cricket and rugby what needs saying between the two parties is far less detailed than between VAR and the ref in football, in cricket there is no opinion proferred, it's simply a process that is shown leading to a factual conclusion, LBW or not, did the ball hit the bat or not. In Rugby there is a little more, the VAR bloke spots something or the ref asks for something to be looked at with ref very much taking the lead once it's viewed.

Imagine in football with one of these situations that takes minutes with the back and forth, with two or three guys in the VAR room all chipping in with perhaps a difference of opinion and the ref, add on the big dfference between all those sports in that a football crowd is far more incendiary than those other sports, as much as it would be "good TV" it would be pouring petrol on the fire IMO....doesn't mean I wouldn't like to see it happen mindGrin

I honestly cannot see difference between rugby and football
for this as laws are equally subjective, and
rugby also looks at sin bins for yellow red cards
although the final discussion on that is not screened
as its happening as game cracks on.

Ref has discussion with lino involved with rugby var.

And you hear the thought processes and how it can change
depending on angles viewed from.

End of day ref has veto on all decisions.

Whatever about Var just stop the clock in football and finish the game at 90 minutes .stop all these winning teams wasting time.
