Frantic opening game of the season that. Arsenal will be delighted with the points. United the better side by a distance. If Arsenal continue to play like that they won’t be challenging Liverpool, Spurs or Man City for the title.

thought that was a much better performance from utd than much of last season but they do';t give any service to the forwards, hojland got slaughtered and as bad as he is if sesko gets similar supply then he won't do much either

Several Arsenal players off the pace, a bit like that pre-season as well. Utd played well 1st half; never looked likely to me 2nd half. Keepers made the difference, Bayindir rubbish defending Arsenal corner, Raya made one world class save.

United played very well in certain big games last season too with energy and passion. If they can play like they did then and today against other teams then they'll have an okay season.

Arsenal were not great. They need Saka and Odegaard to play with equal threat as one gives the other space. They can’t double team both.

I thought there were flashes of  MO so I am hoping for a return to his brilliant ways but I would also like to see Nwaneri given a chance.

Arsenal had an awesome looking bench. They will be there or there abouts but look way off the pace at this stage.

Nice to get a win at Old Trafford. Martinelli & Gyokeres were both poor and even Ødegaard, Rice and Saka were average by their high standards. Havertz looked hungry when he came on, a plus. Man Utd had loads of possession and played with passion a positive start without a result on this occasion.

Looks like the officials are going to clamp down on time wasting, this season, let's hope it is applied consistently. Early last season they clamped down on kicking the ball away and then seemed to give up completely on the idea.
Report CaptainCristy August 18, 2025 11:13 AM BST
Thought Havertz looked as bad as ever, also got away with begging for a yellow after he was ‘fouled’, another thing that is applied according to who the ref is/ how he is feeling the game.

When ezes goal went in against Chelsea, social media was
abuzz with folk saying Guehi had done nowt wrong
and Chelsea guy has to be stronger.

Of course he pushed him so far that goal was ruled out
for encroaching the wall.

We are told all the time it's a man's game and
he's been out muscled or out strengthed.

But then folk claim the foul when they lose out.

We are told oh he's dived and counter argument
he's entitled to go down.. There was contact.

Tough job for a ref, innit.

Could go to basketball rules and ban physical
contact... Don't think that works in footy
Report SirNorbertClarke August 18, 2025 12:50 PM BST
Saliba has been trained to cheat.

Tough job for a ref, innit.

Not really. There is a rule book and he has 2 assistants and a video referee.

4 officials should be able to spot fouls and enforce the rules.

They are neutral, or should be, and players
from all side are trained to push the laws and

We all want our team to get more favourable

Refereeing and var error
Report SirNorbertClarke August 18, 2025 2:24 PM BST
When the ball goes in the net is it not the VAR's job to check no rules were broken?

Everyone watching Sky could see Saliba manhandling Mount in order to obstruct the United goalkeeper.

How come Howard Webb hasn't stood down the VAR?

Can anyone name another sport where the rules are ignored.... by the referees?

Rugby? Tennis? Cricket? Golf? Chess? Darts?
Report SirNorbertClarke August 18, 2025 2:27 PM BST

Knife comment s bit pathetic tbh.

You want to pick and choose the rules that are applied?

Report Storm Alert August 18, 2025 4:04 PM BST
If Calafiori hadn't scored, the ref could have given a penalty for Cunha's manhandling of Zubimendi, which was far worse than Saliba backing into Mount. But as Roy Keane said they're not playing chess...
Report SirNorbertClarke August 18, 2025 4:27 PM BST
If Cunha was fouling Zubimendi in the box then a penalty should have been awarded.

My point is simple, the game has laws, those laws should be enforced without exception as they are done in every other sport.

Football is unique in that referees are allowed to decide which rules to enforce game by game.
Report duffy August 18, 2025 4:35 PM BST
Cunha did practically throw Zubamendi to the ground, you simply can't stop it, they tried to clamp down on it in the past and awarded a few pens but then bottled it, they are more worried about the farce of half a dozen pens every game compared to wrestling at every corner. A wrestling match at every corner is more palatable than half a dozen pens being awarded.
Report SirNorbertClarke August 18, 2025 4:51 PM BST
All that PGMO have to do is enforce the law for 1 weekend and the problem would go way. As it stands with the refs deciding whether or not to enforce the laws they are open to allegations of favouritism or worse still corruption.

Well the referee & VAR just interpret as best they could. Thankfully the days of Mike Riley at Old Trafford are long gone. What was Simon Hooper going to do there? Disallow goal and give penalty to Arsenal for Cunha's manhandling of Zubimendi or disallow goal and award free kick to Man Utd for Saliba's backing into Mount? Of course not, he allowed goal and VAR confirmed his decision after looking at the usual array of grappling which goes on for every corner. Correct decision. Mount was not physically strong enough to cope with Saliba and the goal was conceded due to the keeper being unable to command the six-yard box from an in-swinging corner. Roy Keene's analysis was spot on.
Report SirNorbertClarke August 18, 2025 5:22 PM BST
The correct decision was to ignore the rules of the game Laugh

Do they do that in Rugby for incidents where there are multiple infractions?

No need to answer that.
Report Storm Alert August 18, 2025 5:26 PM BST
They didn't ignore the rules of the game they applied them the same as in every other game. You just have a crazy fixation about Saliba, get over it...
