He's a good pundit, but that's a lot of monets.

Match of the Day is said to be welcoming a very famous face to its presenting roster following Gary Lineker’s exit.

Wayne Rooney has reportedly signed a big-money deal with the BBC in a bid to start a new chapter away from football management.

It’s said the former England player, 39, has secured £800,000 for the gig, which will see him appear on MOTD for two years with the possibility of an extension.

What’s more, Rooney should be involved in the show’s 2026 World Cup coverage, jetting to the US, Canada, and Mexico to bring viewers the highlights.

They wanted someone like Thierry Henry, and Rooney was the eighth choice.

I like Rooney,

I think he has a great footballing brain. Can't believe they are paying him £800,000 though!

Oddly, as well, Rooney would be an even
better pundit with Lineker feeding him questions.
Report impossible123 July 7, 2025 5:54 PM BST
What a waste of money by the BBC? Why????????????????? Getting rid of Mr Lineker and now another expensive replacement. The bloke cannot "present" - pundit ok -but a presenter? Absolutely not! This is pure nepotism in my book.

£800k to be a pundit? He's more expensive than Mr Lineker! Why? Is the role of a pundit that important? Most viewers (me included) do not give a damn most of them say anyway. I'd much prefer the actions on the field and comments of managers.

Should the person awarding this “ salary “ still be in his job?
Report raspberrybottom July 8, 2025 6:09 PM BST
Haven't watched MOTD on Saturday night "properly" for ages.

Record it, then fast forward in between the matches to just watch the games.

Not very many good "pundits" about on any of the channels.

Gripe over.

There's a decent sketch there, that slot on AR where they have 3 or 4 items and the audience have to guess which one is the oldest or worth the most, you could have 3 or 4 grannies on and after a brief description given and with Fiona Bruce fiercely deliberating they are then asked which one Wayne had bonedGrin

Mr Rooney is hurt by the comment of his old boss at Birmingham Mr Brady. Mr Brady questioned Mr Rooney's work ethic as head coach. Mr Rooney said he was disappointed with the comment.

Mr Rooney was pants at Birmingham. He was also pants at Plymouth Argyle. Both teams were relegated when Mr Rooney was head coach.

Rooney and Keane were serious world class players not great managers, however  Carragher and Neville would be lucky to get a place in a championship team currently, but they are making fortunes in podcasts and TV. If you don't want to watch it don't.
