you stop the clock , at what point do you restart it?

when play resumes...

how does that stop time wasting? and how does it shorten the game?

It’d be a three hour game then.

Stating the obvious, but it's only time-wasting when the ball is not in-play. Goal kicks, free kicks, throw-ins, corners, injuries etc. Goalkeepers can still use it when they collect a ball from (say) one of Werner's shots, but then just keep the 6-second rule for this scenario. It won't shorten the game unless they reduce the game to an hour, which is probably what it actually is anyway. I'm all for stopping the clock, but in saying that, I was originally in favour of VAR before I saw it in action. Not so keen today.

Stop these stupid goal celebrations that will save time, the one where you run 30 yards to knee slide and then wait until all your teammates and the subs come and jump all over you - the one where a scorerer puts the ball up his shirt and runs around sucking his thumb, think that means he as tubbed somebody, maybe his wife, conceding teams should be allowed to KO within 30 secs of conceding a goal.
To compensate the scorers they can stay on the pitch at the end of the game and do their celebrations. |

Got to wait 5 minutes for var before players can celebrate these daze.

It would be a 60 minute game. It would stop time wasting because time wasting would be a waste of time
I'm against it though. I'm a referee and I'm sick of Americanisms influencing our game |

Some teams delay the game on purpose because of
high energy pressing, and they want a break. Goalie goes down, as he doesn't leave the field. Some players are very slow to get up too. |

Goal celebrations don't delay it more than the VAR check after every goal, generally.
Time wasting is as much about killing opposition momentum and giving your defenders a break if the opposition are on top of them late on and you are trying to see the game out. The rule changes seem to be made by nerd refs who have never played the game and don't understand this. They add on an extra 5-10 mins a game now, then they allow one team to waste half of it and don't add it back on. It doesn't stop time wasting, it just adds 10 mins to the length of most matches with at least as much time-wasting if not more. They need rules like giving a team a corner if a goal kick isn't taken quickly etc. Understand the motivations to time waste and remove them via effective sanctions. The game is supposed to flow freely with a consequent endurance fitness element to it in the latter stages. Giving players 5 extra breathers a half scuppers this. |
