The only time to take a penalty like that is a friendly game if you cant kick a ball into  top corner no business taking penalty.I dont think it will cost Arsenal as the huge price of real madrid shocked me i smell a rat Madrid playing like a pub team first half

Players should be fined for pens like that imo. He wanted it to be about him. He's on stage with Vini and M'Bappé and outshining them with a cute little pen but he makes a complete bollocks of it. Could have been very costly for the team and he needs to be told that it's always team first, win the tie and then do the instagram crap later.

Some people think penalties are just a gimme (gimme, gimme)
But as they went into the match, They had a dream
And in the end, The winner takes it all

Not bad for 7.45 in the morning?

Panenka and Pirlo class penalties, great football memories, it takes bottle to try it, at least the lad redeemed himself in open play.
Penalties if you can get it in net, it's a success obviously, if you miss whatever way you try it, it is wrong decision and wrong execution.
I thought Goalie done well to save it, but only seen it once on tv this morning so i might be wrong.

Malay, the save was quite easy for the keeper, imo
Saka put it halfway up and the same side as the keeper dived
Higher up, down the middle, or the opposite side and it's a goal
For the good penalty takers who are confident enough to wait for the keeper to dive first, then pass it into the opposite side of the goal... The keeper made it easy

All, imo, of course

i don't think he made the wrong decision he just never executed it correctly, 8 times of 10 he scores, to say he should be fined is crazy comment

abba21 good conspiracy theory, holds up well. I've seen Real throw CL progression year-after-year...

Ridiculous pen by Sake; hopefully at least he will have learnt from that (or he needs to practice more). Didn't let affect his confidence though with a lovely goal in the 2nd half.

I only seen it once and was rushing about to get my dogs in the car for my wife. So I take you're judgement before mine.

I thought from my limited view, he went for middle and lacked elevation on execution.

Definitely agree taking penalty nowadays you wait for goalie to dive, no disagreement on that, and whether it's a dink in middle or open your'e body and despatch it in other corner.
It takes bottle but they are well paid and assume practice them, although you cant recreate the pressure in training.

Best penalty ever but sure you need to trust you're team mate big time or you are going to look very silly.

Yes, execution was strange. He had the keeper move and down but hit it his side, why? The middle of the goal was empty. Easy to criticise and maybe rightly but I like the kid who not only has skill and class but steel and bottle.

It was a brainfárt from Saka, caught in two minds, no way he meant to hit it to the side

This was obviously the worst pen ever, ball travelled about 1mm forward

Danny Mills was such a loathsome prick though, still is. If Pires understood he was being called  **** in French he might have reacted differently.

Kind Regards.

Interesting subject penalties, I'm going off topic but at least we are talking sport rather than deranged politics.

In a shoot out would you have best taker first or last ? I would have my best last because the pressure mounts incredibly IMO, but I do see the argument for getting in front early.
Horrible way to lose in penalty shoot out, nobody has thought of a better idea.

Would he have done it if tie was 0-0? Does kind of sum up Arsenal though as it should just have been belted in  - 'av it style -  but fanny arsed around trying to be cute instead. Glad he did though (and well played ref for overturning pen!) as i had the 1-2 (also had 2-2 on other match so a great night all round!). Wd Saka!

Best first. Adds pressure, gives confidence and no point having the best last if it is all over by then.

Agree with Whispering about best penalty takers going first for the reason he gave.

I've had a rethink about the cancelled Real penalty which I originally thought was a penalty, but was well in the minority.
The contact by Rice was minimal but he still held the forward back... This happens at every corner and free kick, and you wouldn't want to be giving 10 penalties a game.
However, once the ref had given it, I thought VAR was only there to check if the ref had made "a clear and obvious error..."...In this case I'm not sure you can say he did...
This is assuming that he didn't change his mind because of some other issue like an offside which was being suggested

The only clear and obvious error was Mbappe diving or rather falling like a felled tree. Rice holding his shirt did not cause him to fall.

I hope they do start giving penalties randomly for anybody who holds a shirt or grabs another player. They do it because they can get away with it. Imagine if the penalty was given and changed the course of the game.

Then we will get the Neanderthal Brigade coming out with excuse. Hands off or a penalty / foul.that would make the game better. We want to see headers from corners not a bun fight or wrestling match.

A study was done a few years back (can't be arsed googling it) and they came up with the best formula for taking pens in a shoot out. It's something like worst takes first, then second best etc until best takes the 5th. I think pretty much everybody ignores it and it only works if all are scored it seems. I am an expert on this as i won the Speenhamland pen competition in 1983 so I know what I'm talking about.

The first pen is important so I'd stick one or two best on first
other on 2nd.

Need a cool head on 5th...

Best taker on 3rd. Captain on 5th. Attackers or set piece takers on 1,2 + 4.

Best taker is not necessarily the best in a shootout. Who can you trust to handle the pressure eg NOT Darwin Nunez

Some are happier to go first, like Shearer wanted to, so let him.

Ronaldo wanted the glory pen going 5th...

Ronaldo missed out on taking a pen in some big competition and they went out because of that, after that he seemed to start going first, can't remember which one it was, might have been with Portugal

The one I was thinking of must have been Spain, watched all of that tournament but never watch the Confederations Cup, Casillas was his team mate at the time.
