I just love the masters - not a massive Golfing fan but this is the word cup of the golfing Year.

Post your fancies on here:

MRS D has gone for Colin Moriikawa at 16/1 and Xander  Schaufffle at 27/1

Im on Rahm at  17/1 and Justin rose at 179/1

Should be a great comp

sometimes you make the right bets and lose. I didn't think it made sense to green out at that odds going into the playoffs as I thought the nerves would continue to get to him and Rose had just played a -6 round.

Report lurka April 14, 2025 12:29 AM BST
Bryson playing with him was the best chance but he was awful. Rory was priced like it's 2014 so him to go out to 6 would be like any other golfer going out to 10+, prob more.

There was f all pressure on him the whole round apart from the 1st and right at the end (understandable but not forced by opponents). But he still managed to almost f it up. His 2 middle rounds won it but any sort of 'breathing down his neck' pressure from Bryson and he'd have folded imo

It should be noted that golf grand slam changed over the years
it was the open, us open, amateur championship and usa amateur
championship. Known as the impregnable quadrilateral it was cracked
by Bobby Jones in 1930.

The US PGA became a major, but is not open to amateurs, and was match play
in which the winner qualified for next year's final, and masters
was created in 1930s so the "majors" were reset.

Over the years the course set ups were idiosyncratic to the major
Rather like tennis being played on different surfaces the
majors suited different types of golfers with cream of course
being able to rise.

Today if you like like links golf and can hit it miles you
can contend at all 4 majors, still tough to win em all.

Back in the day without air travel it was sometimes impossible
to compete in all four majors in same year.

A few golfers won 3 majors and were unable to play in masters
during their prime as it didn't exist for them... Walter hagen had 11
major wins.

Phil Mickelson has won 3, but not a us open but 6 2nd places, ouch

Speith needs a usa PGA,

Trevino never won a masters, Watson and Palmer never won PGA...

Hey ho

Still buzzing for Rory

Report swiftynifty April 15, 2025 5:29 PM BST
exactly, all about the car.

when it comes to 'greatest' i like it to be something the entire population would've have tried.

most will have run at some point, kicked a football, swung some kind of bat, that's my criteria. I liked Daley Thompson but he wasn't actually anywhere near the best in any of his 10 events.

Yeah, I'm not having Lewis Hamilton. Shows how bad the Brits are at sport when their greatest of all time is a tossup between a car driver and an Irishman.

Funny how most of  the F1 teams are based in England, the (British) Open is a Major, Wimbledon is a grand slam and  the Premier League is easily the best football league in the world.

Report mesmerised April 15, 2025 6:48 PM BST
The plebs on the forum don't understand what they're talking about, the best drivers always end up in the best cars, they're not plucked out of thin air. Lewis for years beat his team mates 90% of the time in exactly the same car, at times when he didn't it was when the car had a few mechanical issues, think in the year he was teammate with Button or another.

Hamilton has always got the best out of whichever car he's in, he's overtaking ability, cornering and driving in different conditions be it wet or dry, is a real skill and not all drivers are as good at it as he is, that's why the big boys want him to drive for them and why he's paid the big bucks. Not many over the decades has been as good as him at making split second calculating decisions, it's the nuances of F1 that you plebs don't understand so you simply put it down to a fast car. He gets any car to be greater than the sum of its part, and all his teammate left in his wake in exactly the same car, know that.

7 World titles, and should have been 8 if that absolute mug racing director didn't rob him of a title allowing Verstappen a clean run to victory.

He is undoubtedly one the Greatest ever British sportsman, and he's done it the hard way, most F1 drivers come from privilege, like Rosberg who went to school via the Monaco race track, but Lewis grew up in a dump like Stevenage in a Working class family in a council house, from that to 7 times World Champions is unbelievable.

Rory has completed Golf, won all 4 majors, first European to do so, he's in that conversation now.

I have a natural bias towards Tennis players but Murray is not really in it as you'd be comparing someone who didn't win everything to others that did, though Murray had to play in the hardest era of all time competing against the 3 best players in history, made 11 slam finals, 2 golds, 3 slams and around 14 masters, was also world number 1 for about 6 months before his hip injury ruined him. But can't have a player with 3 slams as the greatest ever British sportsman, looks daft when stacked up against players from Switzerland and Serbia who have over 20, needs more gravitas that that, as great a player as he was.

Daly Thompson was before my time, but the decathlon really means you are never the best at any given discipline, you're a jack of all trades and a master of none.

Steve Redgrave competes in a sport that for me, much like Cycling and long distance running, needs to be seperated from skilled sports like Golf and Tennis, Rowing is just pretty much all physical.

Lennox was great and literally beat every single opponent he ever faced, albeit some in rematches, but you have to look at who he beat in their prime and how great they were, and there werent really any, Tyson was 15 years past his best and Klitcscho looked the better fighter and was only stopped because he couldn't see out of one eye, Lewis refused the rematch.

Each to their own, but for me Rory and Lewis are the two stand outs.
