I can't say I'm an Onana fan and would expect Utd to seriously consider bringing someone in to at least compete in the summer for the No.1 spot subject to how much funds can be generated...but on raw stats he's not bad at all in most categories..the ones Matic refers to are presumably goals per game and clean sheet % which is more a reflection of the teams general struggles.. |

I think I said on the United thread years back when the hate mob were out for De Gea that in all the problems at United the keeper issue was about number 74, it's now top 10....careful what you wish for.

De Gea wasn't very good in his last couple of seasons and still wanted big, big money by GK standards..
He was offered reduced terms which he spent months not agreeing to..by the time he (or his agent) finally accepted he'd have to take a notable cut his average performances (multiple errors) and total inability to play out from the back meant he was not retained.. he was so in demand he spent over a year without a club before signing for Fiorentina where he's been decent but certainly no more than that..you could pick up a younger equivalent for around 20-25m max..which they may do this summer. clearly looks as though Onana isn't good enough and was yet another poor signing ( a theme of nearly 12 years now) for the price paid although the scrutiny he gets for his mistakes and the limited credit for his decent games exaggerate that feeling. |

Clean sheets and goals conceded are more relevant to team performance..
his save % is down on that of their previous keeper though decent... his saves to expected goals is positive but barely above Onana who also has a positive figure as referenced recently. |

The ability to play out from the back was a white elephant, Pep did it so others tried to follow, the irony was that the better team you are the less you ever needed to do it, Pep's decent City sides would have been just as successful if the keeper booted the ball long because every side facing those City sides were so scared they were all behind the ball anyway, there was no press to beat.
Poor sides are faced with a high press not sides that dominate possession and have that fear instilled in the opposition. Sides that are successful will be so whether they have a keeper that can pass a ball or not, but they may not be so if they have a keeper that can't keep the ball out of the net. Keeping the ball out of the back of the net should be massively the primary reason for any keeper playing. |
