Almost guaranteed there at least 5.  On Betfair prices there's a 0.6% chance there are 7 teams.  Villa win the CL and fail to finish top 5 in the PL and Spurs or Man Utd win the EL

Seem to remember England had a 98% chance of the 5th place at one point last season!

Then lost every knockout tie from then on

I guess it is gonna help that all Spanish, all German ties, are occurring in earlier rounds than all English ones.

Isn't 5 gonna be the maximum though? When it was maximum 4 the 4th place (Tottenham) missed out when 6th place (Chelsea) won the CL . Or have they change this

I reckon it's probably mathematically impossible now for Italy overtake England

Italy need another 34 points from their 3 remaining teams.  England got about 8 points tonight.  Not sure if that's just for winning the 3 games or for qualifying too?  Italy have a max 15 games left.  Whether it's mathematical or not it's done and dusted.

The Premier League will have five teams in the Champions League next season after it secured one of the extra places for performance by clubs across the three European competitions.

Two leagues will be rewarded with a European Performance Spot (EPS), which was introduced in last season as part of a revamp to expand the Champions League to a 36-team competition.

England has been well out in front at the top of the table for most of the season, and the extra place was all but confirmed by a catalogue of poor results for Italian clubs in the knockout playoff round and the round of 16.

That left the Premier League needing only one win, or two draws, from the remaining fixtures and that was sealed on Tuesday when Arsenal won 3-0 at home to Real Madrid.

If United or somehow the spuds, win the Europa, is that 6 teams in ?

Aston Villa's elimination means 11th in the Premier League will not be able to qualify for Europe by league position.

But 9th or 10th still could.

And Chelsea's Conference League performance and final PL position is the one to watch.

PL teams shouldn't be eligible for the Conference League. It was supposed to be for lower tier clubs/countries. No PL team is at that level.

Chelsea will take the most money from the ECL pot, could also secure CL from top 5 and then head off to the CWC where they'll make $50m minimum.

If you've played CL or CWC within the last 5 years you shouldn't be eligible for ECL.

LaLiga joins the Premier League in having five teams in the Champions League next season.

Newcastle have to go to arsenal too.

Villa and Chelsea have very hard remaining fixtures, cup games and look like missing out.  Man City have soft fixtures but could still get deducted points.  Forest have a good set of fixtures, but the pressure could getting to them to them.  Newcastle fixtures are so so, (their match at Arsenal could see a 2nd string Arsenal), but they have a good GD and are points ahead so look almost assured.

If Arsenal are in the final by then, then you can be sure it's a 3 point banker for Newcastle as we wouldn't play any first team players, assuming CL football next season is assured which in theory it should be. Kind Regards.

Newc is the least likely game they will rest if they get to the final.

Maybe soton but that's a week before the final still. A result v newc and that might be it. Lose to them they might need to make sure v soton.

Currently you'd rest v Ipsw, Palace, Pool and Bmouth as they are all next game before/after CL ties. 5th is the same as 2nd if you are going for CL. PL only becomes relevant if you are in danger of finishing 6th.

5 places is good news for Bilbao but they have the derby v sociedad between ties v united and mightn't rest even tho they should. The EL final is in Bilbao

Happens plenty enough if there is a week between games, that players are rested on the penultimate fixture, rather than the match the week before.  Reason being fitness and match sharpness.

Be interesting to see what Sunderland do for instance.  I think they are more likely to rest players at Oxford, than the final match at  home to QPR

Pretty stoopid to have 5 teams in the European CHAMPIONS League.

Football is selling its soul. Can you imagine United and Chelsea not qualify allows Newcastle, Villa etc a chance to catch up financially. Keeps everyone on their toes. Makes life interesting for us. Enjoying the pain of others!

People have been churning this 'Champions' title line for years, it's just a branding thing ffs, wasn't it also the case even back in the European Cup days that CL holders got in even if that hadn't won their domestic league that season, not a new thing. Kind Regards.

It’s pathetic. Sure Champions could defend their title. The “ Champions “ League only gets exciting in the knockout phase or last game of the group phase. It is bloated and needs culling. It is boring during the group stages. This week got the blood flowing again.

having 3,4 or 5 teams from each top european league qualify for the champions league devalues the europa league. the old uefa cup used to be a cracking competition with the runners up,3rd, 4th placed of each countries league in it. the europa league is now a second rate ( arguably 4th rate ) competition.

Fair point TTT, but in its defence, teams change over the summer so the teams that win their respective leagues are not the same teams that compete.

CL is the ESL really, as far as UEFA can go with it anyway. I thought the group format was much more interesting this year than the previous 8 groups format.

This CWC is going to be like a cráp version of the CL but it's only once every 4 years. Chelsea will get a minimum $50m from that, they won't be missing out much financially but they're already in plenty of financial trouble.

I have a problem with PL teams and other rich clubs getting into the ECL. That comp was supposed to give barely pro clubs a chance to make decent money. I'd say most PL clubs wouldn't have a problem if they didn't partake in it either. For the money involved and Thursday nights, it's really not worth it for them and is a hindrance.

Shamrock Rovers got out of the group stage in the ECL. They made over €5m for that. Plus a tiny bit more in extra gate receipts, sponsorship from the extra games. You get €200k prize money for winning the Irish league.

I'd say the ECL winner gets less than €15m. But you get into the EL group stage the following year, which is prob worth as much financially. If you qualify for the CWC or have qualified for the CL in the last 5 years you should be excluded from the ECL imo. It's a lifeline for a lot of clubs from small countries.

Neither team will finish in a European position domestically, so whoever lifts the trophy will play in the UCL as UEL titleholders.

This guarantees there will be nine Premier League clubs in Europe, and six in the Champions League.
