You think Sky pay the big bucks to for a top 4/5 race lol, 5.1 billion is there current deal, 6.7 billion is what the next cycle's worth starting from next season, their biggest viewing figures have always come from the biggest games during the run in for a title run in, they didn't pay all that money to promote Brighton v Fulham or Bournemouth v Villa towards the end of the season to see who gets CL football, and neither would their sponsors be happy. It' interests us, but they'll be gutted. Was just reading Amazon didn't bid for any rights to the Premier League starting from 28/29 season and every game outside of the 3pm KO's will be screened live, 100 more matches from August, every cloud. I imagine Sky make more money from people in match gambling than they do from advertising. And as we all know a lot of gamblers will be on any old rubbish.

tbf makes no difference to most fans unfortunate enough to support run of the mill teams who are never in the Champions League or contention for a title or capable of a sustained FA Cup run. All they can look forward to is occasional rivalry in grudge matches. Lets be honest relegation battles must be horrible for the fans. Some of my mates support teams that have never won a title in their lifetime, imagine that...

5.1bn is the total paid by domestic broadcasters over 3 years. Sky pay about 1.5bn a season. They are already losing money and overpaying so upping the deal by 30% next cycle is going to be risky. They will have to jack up the cost and justify it with more live games and lobby the government to clamp down on streaming. They've had 2 decent title races out of 3 in this cycle.
Sky don't own Sky Bet either, they sold it years ago. |

They cannot possibly clamp down on illegal streaming, it's like whack-a-mole, you nail one major illegal streaming distributor another will rise in it's place somewhere else, a dog chasing it's tail and if they're stupid enough to keep wasting money doing what they've been doing, which is funding regional police services to catch these IPTV service providers thinking that'll stop it, then more fool them, all it does is disrupt it at best. They've been showcasing these big cocaine stings for decades in the hope it'd deter users, but cocaine smuggling has never stopped because the market has never gone away. The military war on drugs in Latin America has done more harm than good in terms of the increase in homicides etc. As long as the cost of subscriptions is seen as too high by consumers then the gap in the market for illegal streaming will always be there. The only real way to clamp down on streaming would be to lower the cost of subscriptions to a much more affordable amount and they're not going to do that with what they've overpaid for it, it's like the TV license, more and more people not paying it so it goes up, more and more people not buying stamps so they've gone up. They've also got some front, Sky can increase the price you agreed to during your a two year contract without letting you know you what rises you can expect before you've signed up and you can't leave without paying a fee if you wanted. Stopped my subscription middle of December; not interested in un competitive matches and, apart from the darts, not much bothered about anything else they show. Much rather listen to 5 Live for nowt.

If the ESL ever comes about they want to give away the basic content with adverts. They intend to offer the content without adverts for a fee. |
