Isn't it time the FA took action, and at least tweaked it slightly. The 3 promoted teams will almost certainly go down again as they did last season.Make it top 2 go up , and third place play 2 game play off with 3rd bottom in Premier. As it stands we have teams that can finish 5th or 6th having a chance to come up through the play offs , they would be lambs to the slaughter ,and you don't deserve promotion if you finish 6th in any league surely.

Given Southampton are gonners, we can include then here.

14 out of 33 Play off winners have stayed up in their first year in the Premier League.

That's not a bad record is it.

Kind Regards.

been saying it for weeks 6th in championship are currently nearly 60 odd pts off 4th btm in EPL having played more and easier games, my team BORO still thinking they can go up are nearly 70 pts behind 4th btm in EPL, I,d imagine  even chairmen like gibbson, wont be over investing in EPL in the hope of turning over 70 pts, they,ll make a few quid happy to be relegated rather than invest big on average players there's a large pool of ,and very few make a big difference compared to your opposition
Report Regbutler February 23, 2025 11:14 AM GMT
Hello, 1tp
I agree with your comments on how far behind a team coming up may be, player wise
However, I can't see how you can say they are 60 or 70 points behind the 4th bottom team  in the EPL when they are in different leagues?
I understand how you've worked it out but it's like saying the promoted team would be on minus 40 points
Report 1st time poster February 23, 2025 11:25 AM GMT
exactly REG they are 40 pts behind  and that's why now at least 2 sometimes 3 of the promoted teams are getting relegated, good chance it will be 3 again this yr

in the past one or 2 teams going up could buy their way in to contention but now  below the few superstars /game changers ,the next 150 players are much of a muchness with established EPL teams still getting 1st pick, its why manu, spuds, chelsea etc cant take yeamsa like b,mouth,Fulham,Forest,c palace etc for granted
Report lurka February 23, 2025 11:29 AM GMT
In Italy if the team in 3rd finishes >14 points ahead of 4th, there are no play offs. They should do something like that but with a lower threshold.

In other leagues the team in 3rd goes straight into the play off final with 6th having to beat 5th and then 4th to get there. But that means 3rd doesn't play for weeks while the others do. There should be a threshold for getting into the play offs. 3rd is currently 17 points ahead of 5th and 6th, half a point a game.
Report Regbutler February 23, 2025 11:40 AM GMT
I agree that finishing third and then getting knocked out of the playoffs by a team who finished with 15 or 20 points less than you in the regular season, doesn't seem fair...
If the promoted teams can manage to stay up in the first season, there are examples recently like Forest, Brighton and Brentford who can then kick on
Report 1st time poster February 23, 2025 11:45 AM GMT
there's currently 15 clubs think they can get in play offs, makes for a competitive championship, but uncompetitive in terms of competing in EPL, ridiculous to think anyone of 15 clubs could compete on level terms in the EPL
I,m a BORO fans but if I were Burnley or s,land I,,d be worried about lampard and Coventry making top 6 and winning play offs ,on a good run and improving every week, on paper chance BORO in theory could be up there again this time next week 2 winnable games this week stoke away and derby at home and west brom only have Leeds away this week, obviously there's 7 other clubs inbetween who,ll get points this week, but ridiculous a team in 13th in march having lost 8 of last 9 could still get promoted,
if it went back to only 2 up /2 down 13 clubs currently thinking their having a good season/doing ok chance of getting promoted, would have effectively been on the beach since november, season over
Report 1st time poster February 23, 2025 1:43 PM GMT
wolves are in btm  3/4 but are a class above saints,Ipswich, LEC, what clubs do you think this seasons promoted clubs have in their sights to finish above next season ?
wolves, palace,Everton 14 pts ahead of btm 3 ,even finishing out of btm 4,5,6 is a mountain for promoted clubs let alone mid table, currently a promoted club what have to think about finishing above MAN UTD to finish outside btm 6

Always thought the Play Offs were unfair.

My odd answer for years, is for every 5pts you finish in front of your Play Off opponent, you should get a goal headstart

So, currently Burnley should start v Blackburn 3-0 up.
You don't deserve a level playing field if you are finishing 17pts behind, as it currently stands
Report maleuk01. February 23, 2025 5:55 PM GMT
Keeps the interest in the league for much longer having the play offs.

Has been a great innovation.

Only thing with the gap between the prem league and the championship is maybe 3rd bottom in prem league go into the playoffs and the 6th in championship don't get in.
Report 1st time poster February 23, 2025 5:58 PM GMT
that's the point its a mirage of competitveness, the more competitive championship gets the more uncompetitive its winners become in the EPL, prizes for all scenario
Report lurka February 23, 2025 6:36 PM GMT
It's the managers too. The type of football that gets you up you get murdered by PL sides playing that way. The likes of Farke and Parker have gone up twice each and this happened. Kompany too. Parker seems to have learned to play a different way now. Doubt Farke will if he goes up again. A play off against 3rd bottom in PL would give a team a better chance of staying in the PL for a second year. Very difficult to become established in a year.

yep good point jump all over teams playing it out from the back, its a recipe for a drubbing
Report prepared83 February 23, 2025 8:25 PM GMT
In ihe IPL(cricket). They do it where 3rd plays 4th and winners goes to the final. 5th plays 6th with the loser going out.
Then the loser of game 1 plays the winner of game 2, with the winner also going to the final.
So its a lot bigger advantage to finish 3rd/4th.

The playoff system works quite well.

Of course there will be unlucky teams from time to time, but
the benefits surely outway the drawbacks.

3rd and 4th in championship seem a cut above this year, but start
level with those in 5th and 6th, it's a bit tough when there's a gap,
but some years team in 7th misses out on goal difference, and it's giving
a lot more meaning to many clubs who have zero chance of finishing top 3.
Report 1st time poster February 24, 2025 10:54 AM GMT
isn't that the point ,if its short odds and recent evidence proves it, that promoted teams will finish in btm 4,probably bottom 3 in EPL, why in 1st week of March should the current 7th to 15th place in championship still think they've got a chance of promotion,
Report ----you-have-to-laugh--- February 24, 2025 3:19 PM GMT
They will get big money if they go up
and likely big player bonus, could double
wages, and set themselves up.

Teams can yoyo before staying up, but money
is important, so getting to promised land, even
for one season can help fund return and longer stay.

EPL is pretty well formed at moment, wolves are in danger
and are a decent team.

I think they tried something like what the OP suggested in the late 80s.
It didnt last.

If memory serves there were a couple of tasty nights involving the followers of some of the biggest clubs in the country. Namely Leeds and Chelsea.

Football is such a money oriented game these days I should imagine that the likes of Ipswich & Southampton have budgeted for relegation. So would be happy
to trouser the 100m for a year in the EPL before going again in the championship next season.
Not so sure about Leicester.

I should think Burnley will be the same. But Leeds, I think they could be in for a long stay when they get back up.
Report 1st time poster February 26, 2025 8:57 AM GMT
that's the point if you say promoted teams can stay up if say they invest 150 mill+, and we,ll bew generous and say 1 a yr for next 6 seasons staysa up,which 6 established teams are people tipping for the drop, wolves are in a different class to this yrs btm 3,
palace/top 10 last season
your basically tipping the likes of brighton,b,moth,Fulham etc to go from challenging for CH LG/eufea cup to not finishing above 3 promoted teams, unless you think man u,spuds etc could go down in future
Report brentford February 26, 2025 3:40 PM GMT
Has got a bigger leap even in recent years I think..

the most recent obvious teams to get up and stay up for any period  Brighton, Bournemouth, Brentford so maybe need a 'B' in your name..
Forest look like they should be good for a while but took a breach of FFP and a spending owner to get to a place of comfort..Fulham I guess reasonably solid now..(Brentford I think are less solid than finishing positions might suggest but would be well paced for a bounceback)

Leeds if they come up as they should I can see becoming a fixture..not many others subject to things I don't know about investment in those clubs..but even that's tougher these days without the very solod fan base of a Leeds which few have..
Report ----you-have-to-laugh--- February 26, 2025 3:47 PM GMT
Target 17th,innit.

City may save one of the bottom 3, but a nightmare
for championship teams, as Shirley they bounce straight back.
Report brentford February 26, 2025 4:00 PM GMT
Yep, partly the FFP/PSR stuff and maybe a bit more savy from promoted owners (better owners even ?)

means you see a lot less implosions of PL relegated teams..

parachute payments remain controversial but largely necessary and give some advantage..
