Great names from Manchester United and Scotland have paid tribute to Denis Law, a legendary figure for both club and country, following his death at the age of 84.
Law, who was diagnosed with dementia in August 2021, scored 237 goals in 404 appearances for United and was the last surviving member of Old Trafford’s “Holy Trinity”, following the passing of George Best in 2005 and Sir Bobby Charlton in 2023. As such, his own passing represents a hugely significant moment in the club’s history.
For Scotland, meanwhile, Law earned 55 caps having made his international debut against Wales in October 1958, going onto score 30 goals, which remains the joint-highest total in the country’s history, alongside that of Sir Kenny Dalglish.
His family said in a statement: “It is with a heavy heart that we tell you our father Denis Law has sadly passed away. He fought a tough battle but finally he is now at peace. We would like to thank everyone who contributed to his wellbeing and care, past and much more recently. We know how much people supported and loved him and that love was always appreciated and made the difference.”

Fantastic footballer a true gentleman and a great sense of humour and fun.

My favourite Denis story was when playing against England in the home internationals for those who don’t know what that as it as a 4 team competition with Northern Ireland and wales also in it and back then only 3 games were shown live annually Anyway just before kick off his united team mate nobby stiles ran up to the half way line and held out his hand to shake the hand of Denis and wish him good luck. The reply from Denis was f… F you English ba….d . |

A sad loss of a great footballer and a wonderful man, remember him visiting Georgie Best just before he passed away, he was in tears but at least that great forward line is together again, RIP Denis the Lawman.
Put a thread up on HR last night sad that no one else could say RIP on it, i'm a livelong Villa fan but i always appreciated the great and wonderful players of other teams. |

my memory of Dennis law
in the 70,s during the power cuts,THE BORO played man utd in the fa cup and you weren't allowed to use the floodlights ,so it was played on a Tues afternoon and we had to nick of school to go despite been warned by headmaster not to, utd won 3 nil think,law best and Charlton scored next day in headmasters office getting a reaming,he said we cant always do what we want to do,he,d have like to have gone because Dennis law was his hero, MY MATE SAID YOU SHOULD HAVE SAID SIR WE,D HAVE GOT YOU HIS AUTOGRAPH  , although he didn't no it at the time ,that's was the side that also had the original GINGER PIRLO in midfield in CARLO SETTORI , |

watching some clips over the weekend and i was reminded when dennis scored with a back hill for Man city against united and refused to celebrate in any shape or form despite the efforts of his team mates....just walked towards his own half......was the first time i saw that level of respect for a former club.....was very nearly regret rather than respect but as a professional was doing his job...

Following a pitch invasion fences were erected at old Trafford for the following season then other grounds followed. The game that day never actually saw out the 90 minutes. |

Denis was one of the great examples of a player being converted from an inside forward into an out and out goalscorer. A fabulous striker he was but what needs saying is just what a brilliant footballer he was - over and above his striker prowess. He could have played anywhere on the park, he was that good. I once saw him start a move in the left back position in his own box which ended up with him in their box slotting it home. He must have bagged ten goals a season, every season, from his follow up routines. What a player, and what a devil. Nobody, but nobody messed with Denis Law. His mother once told him as a kid to NEVER take bullying off of anybody, or he'd always have to, and he never did. Still gutted three days on but oh so grateful that I was able to appreciate him while he was here. R.I.P. great man. I'll be there with arm up-raised. shirt cuff finger clenched and heart full as you travel to your resting place. Best wishes to your extended family and grieving friends.

Never really saw much of him growing up. I heard he was as great off the pitch as he was on it.
Love the fact that he wasn't bitter and twisted at all so he played a round of golf when England won the World Cup Final in 1966! Legend is an overused word but not wasted on this fine man. |

Met him with some of my friends when he was guest of honour at some speedboat race on the Tyne.
He set up camp on tuxedo Princess (the boat) under Tyne Bridge, and everybody wanted to talk to him, ask him questions about man utd, citeh, Newcastle, eng v Scotland and just about everything under the sun,.. He answered everybody and his answers just left everybody loving him a little bit more, such a nice bloke, great dignity and humour. Sad day, again today, but a lovely tribute. |
