The place-names on flags at England away games has always been for smaller towns, villages.

Never seen any with 'Liverpool' or 'London' or 'Arsenal'....

It's always been for fans who see themselves primarily as England fans rather than a Premier league team.

I didn't watch it, I would travel to the end of the world to watch Liverpool but not interested in England. I was in and out of the garden after getting back from Ascot.
My neighbours who go the games were cutting the grass and when Liverpool and Everton are playing you can usually hear loud cheers a few doors down and at the back but there was silence when England scored.
