Though before my time, the 88 team on paper looks way too strong to have finished bottom of their group ?
Was there really nobody better than Palmer in that position in 92 ? often hear his time being mocked
Don't know how that 96 team drew to the Swiss team.

Phil Neville looked the only weak link on in 2000 and he gave away the pen in the last match in the last minute that lost the game
Don't know how we lost to Romania with that team overall however.
Beckham was never a captain over Gerrard, Sven was a Beckham fanboy.
2004 front 6 looks the strongest
2012 teams looks the weakest (from the one's I remember)
Seven of the 2020 team will start tonight, according to my sources
Only won 1 single opening game at the Euro's in 9 attempts.

Kind Regards

That’s some stat, one winning game out of nine. That 2004 team looks good.

Regarding Carlton Palmer I’m sure we had far better who could’ve played. None are really coming to me though. The only name I can think of in a similar position would be Le Tissier who never got a fair try.

2012 playing Wellbeck as a lone striker. Feck me!
Report salmon spray June 16, 2024 10:32 AM BST
Attacks on Carlton totally unfair imo. There've been a lot worse played for England.

2004 was part of the lopsided midfield era

Are you a Wednesday fan, Salmon? Wink

That 2004 midfield was exceptional on paper. It’s a shame it never really worked for England.

Was the 1992 Smith, Alan Smith or Alan Smith?
Report Clarky9 June 16, 2024 11:45 AM BST
Aren't you the bloke who advised everyone to lay Haaland for top scorer at 9/2?
Report Jack Hacksaw June 16, 2024 11:49 AM BST
If it was '92, surely it would be Alan Smith?
Report DIE LINKE June 16, 2024 12:00 PM BST
No, it was Alan Smith.
Report Crisp77 June 16, 2024 12:02 PM BST
I thought Alan Smith, too. Its a case of being either too old or too young.

5 draws, 3 defeats

Engerland layers, draw backers cleaned up, but could be
chasing from last time.

The main alternative to Carlton Palmer at the time was Geoff Thomas who has gone on to be better known for his personal battle and charity fund-raising vs leukaemia

Managers of the past scared of losing the 1st game instead
of trying to win it.

1988
Sunday afternoon.
Ready to watch the match.
Team announced
HODDLE on the fckin bench.
Went and sat in the garden.
Told me Brother to give me a shout when HODDLE came on.
Called me in with about 25 minutes to go.
He created about 5 or 6 good chances and ran the show.

Lineker missed a load of chances (uncharacteristically) against Ireland...we should have won the game but then had the Dutch in the second game who were a very good side...think we hit the woodwork twice ? (certainly once) though Dutch deserved to win (Van Basten and Gullit in full flow) and were already out when we played against Russia with a weakened unmotivated team...wasn't even shown live bizarrely as they chose to show ROI v Netherlands which had more on it...but even so..not right !

2004 team beat themselves.  Should have beaten Portugal. Rooney getting injured was a big blow

Too many interclub rivalries have thwarted engerland.

Best thing Gareth has done is unite the squad.

One England captain had a whole club's players in squad not
speaking to him, lol.

Southgate has won the opening game in EVERY tournament he’s managed.
Report PorcupineorPineapple June 17, 2024 1:30 PM BST
I could live to be 100 and I'll still never understand how you replace Rooney with Darius Vassell against Portugal in 04. He was a decent player and all, but just completely different to Wayne and forced the team to change. Joe Cole would have been a far better idea.
Report mesmerised June 17, 2024 1:36 PM BST
Heskey would have been the best option to link up with Owen again.
Report PorcupineorPineapple June 17, 2024 1:46 PM BST
Better than Vassell at least. Owen was playing brilliantly in stretching the defence and giving Rooney loads of space. Could have just done the same with Cole or pushed Scholes or Gerrard into the #10 role. Vassell was just another and far lesser Owen.
