The Keeper tells the incredible true story of Bert Trautmann (David Kross), a German soldier and prisoner of war who, against a backdrop of British post-war protest and prejudice, secures the position of Goalkeeper at Manchester City, and in doing so becomes a footballing icon.

That was a great film sparrow. You wouldn`t believe it if it wern`t true. Especially when he meets the former guard in the cemetery. A remarkable story about a remarkable man. Good actor the guy who played the lead role. And the old British actor who played his father-in-law too. What is his name again? Modern day Sam Kydd. Seems to be in all British films recently. Thanks Sparrow.

THE FILM APPEARANCES OF SAM KYDD

More info and pics on samkydd.com

My father made 119 films between 1945 and 1952. So he says in his memoir. Wow! And it seems to tally. Other than the occasional half day with no mention of the name of the film and just the money earned in his accounts diary!

I have now counted 286 (there are less here) according to his unpublished memoirs and accounts book and iMDB,  though there are several mistakes in their lists of his films and Tellies and I’m now looking for his diaries post 1959. He has a tendency to just write the film studio and the length of time he was on the film and the fee. And no name. Some can’t be traced. I’m also aware that he did many more Film Foundation Films than I have in this list. He does many more tellies and dubbing jobs not mentioned here than you could believe. Remarkable.

“ There have only been two world class goalkeepers .
one was Lev Yashin,  the other was the German boy
who played for Manchester City “ - Lev Yashin

Lev Yashin was the greatest keeper ever. Majority of football fand would agree on that and Dynamo Moscow have a huge Bronze statue of the great man outside their stadium.

When Gordon Banks appeared on This Is Your Life, Eamon Andrews stated that Lev Yashin had sadly lost a leg due to Thrombosis and couldn`t make it to the show in person but he had a live video link from Moscow where Yashin paid tribute to his great friend Gordon Banks.

Later, at the end of the show, Eamon Andrews stated he had a big surprise for Banks, informing the audience and Gordon that, "Lev Yashin had hopped on a plane and actually made the journey to London in honour of his friend"!

... you honestly couldn`t make it up. Laugh

I don't know how anyone can say Lev Yashin was the greatest keeper ever, how much of his goalkeeping has ever been on TV, let alone anyone seeing him in the flesh.

Absolute rubbish being 29 years of age in his first World Cup and came home a hero.

In 1954, Yashin was called up to the Soviet national team, and would go on to gather 78 caps. With the national team he won the 1956 Summer Olympics as well as the first European championship, the 1960 European Nations' Cup. He also played in three World Cups, in 1958, 1962 and 1966. Yashin is credited with four clean sheets out of the 12 games he played in the World Cup finals.

The 1958 World Cup, played in Sweden, put Yashin on the map for his performances, with the Soviet Union advancing to the quarter-finals. In a group stage match against the eventual Cup winners Brazil, the Soviet team lost 2–0. Facing a Brazil team that featured Garrincha and a 17 year old Pelé in attack, Yashin's performance prevented the score from becoming a rout.[

Lev Ivanovich Yashin (Russian: Лев Иванович Яшин; 22 October 1929 – 20 March 1990) was a Soviet professional footballer, regarded by many as the greatest goalkeeper in the history of the sport. He was known for his athleticism, positioning, imposing presence in goal, and acrobatic reflex saves. He was also deputy chairman of the Football Federation of the Soviet Union.

Yashin earned status for revolutionising the goalkeeping position by imposing his authority on the entire defence. A vocal presence in goal, he shouted orders at his defenders, came off his line to intercept crosses and also ran out to meet onrushing attackers, done at a time when goalkeepers spent the 90 minutes standing in the goal waiting to be called into action. His performances made an indelible impression on a global audience at the 1958 World Cup, the first to be broadcast internationally. He dressed head to toe in apparent black (in truth very dark blue), thus earning his nicknames the "Black Spider" or the "Black Panther", which enhanced his popularity.

Yashin appeared in four World Cups from 1958 to 1970, and in 2002 was chosen on the FIFA Dream Team of the history of World Cups. In 1994, he was chosen for the FIFA World Cup All-Time Team, and in 1998 was chosen as a member of the World Team of the 20th Century. According to FIFA, Yashin saved over 150 penalty kicks in professional football — more than any other goalkeeper. He also kept over 270 clean sheets in his career, winning a gold medal at the 1956 Olympic football tournament, and the 1960 European Championships.

In 1963, Yashin received the Ballon d'Or, the only goalkeeper ever to receive the award. He was additionally named posthumously to the Ballon d'Or Dream Team in 2020, a greatest all-time XI, and was voted the best goalkeeper of the 20th century by the IFFHS. He was also named to the IFFHS All-time Men's Dream Team in 2021. He was named by France Football as the greatest goalkeeper of all time in 2020. In November 2003, to celebrate UEFA's Jubilee, he was selected as the Golden Player of Russia by the Russian Football Union as their most outstanding player of the past 50 years.

At the 1962 World Cup the 33 year old was blamed for the users quarter final exit to Chile
( it was later revealed he was suffering from concussion ) with the media in Russia and abroad
declaring his career was over

Russias greatest goalkeeper could have slipped through the net
Working in a military factory when WW2 began he had a nervous breakdown and at the age of 18
he was forced out of employment . Performances for the factory team had seen him join Dynamo Moscows youth team
but his debut was ruined by nerves and he conceded a goal to the opposing goalkeeper . These nerves may have cost
Yasmin 3 years of his career and footballs loss was ice hockey’s gain ..
