He's on 350 grand a week aged 33 for 3 seasons, the above 3 posters would all sell their souls to play there as well, everyone who's criticised him would but they pretend they wouldn't because they know they'll never be in that position to have it questioned. All he's doing is kicking a ball for a living, if you want to make those kind of moral judgments because of the country he's playing in, then bare in mind the country you are living in sells weapons to the Saudi's every single year worth billions and they're used against innocent civilians in Yemen. Wasn't so long ago gay marriage was also illegal in Britain. Lots of hypocrisy around.

Report PorcupineorPineapple December 26, 2023 10:10 PM GMT
I'm not absolutely sure about the "everyone would do what he did". Have to remember he's probably had a decade of earning millions per year. Unless he's absolutely p!ssed it up the wall on gambling or hair gel then he should be set for life already. And I'd be certain he'd be planning to move into coaching or punditry afterwards so he has a lucrative career to come. So I'm not convinced he's that desperate for the money. Especially when he painted himself as the face for equality and social justice so often.
To be at the forefront of the rainbow laces campaign and then choose, out of all the different places he could have gone to, to go to the place where gay people are killed simply for their sexuality is hypocritical. As has been seen in his mealy mouthed media appearances since.
Report ----you-have-to-laugh--- December 26, 2023 10:25 PM GMT
Can earn enough in 3 years to make grand kids self sufficient.

It's also an easier paced game, and might become
a coach out there too.

I had a few mates in nhs went out to work in saudi
for 3 years or so back in the mid 80s.

All came back to buy lovely houses.

As for rainbow laces it's already documented that
he has done good by his actions... Surely somebody
else can step up now he's gone.

Plenty more will take the monets.
Report PorcupineorPineapple December 26, 2023 10:37 PM GMT
But it's opened everyone's eyes to how poor the standard is out there. And his team's miles from the top and often playing in front of hundreds. Everyone knows he shouldn't be anywhere near the England team and it can't be huge odds he's out of the squad next summer.

I'm not sure anyone's enhanced their reputation out there. Ronaldo is just keeping himself fit, while trying to stay a Portugal international and score more goals. Firmino and Fabinho seem to have dropped off the radar completely while Mané only shows up in flashes. Probably the only one who might come out of it well is the Wolves player who probably gets a sly move to Newcastle. Has all the hallmarks of China a few years ago where a few go for the money but a couple of years later no-one else thinks it's worth it. Probably all depends on whether Saudi can elbow their way into top level competition.

As for rainbow laces, I think his actions have now neutered his previous good work. It now looks like any footballer can't be trusted. That they can all be bought, so why listen to any of them any more when they stand up for something?
Report ----you-have-to-laugh--- December 26, 2023 10:45 PM GMT
Well no it's an exhibition league compared to EPL.

But signing largely end of career guys still
improves the league out there.

They are a million miles away from their golf

There's some method in the madness of their spending,
but I really just don't get it.

ok Scandanavian Haven - gonna tell you a little story - about 30 years ago I worked in a printing factory, there was a round of redundancies and our FoC (Father of the Chapel/ Shop Steward) got paid off. So the remaining employees voted for me as their new FoC (Google it) so I represented about 100 men and 30 women. I was earning around 600 quid a week and had a wife and 2 young sons.
A new wave of redundancies was announced and the Managing Director came to me with the forecast of what each potential redundant employee would receive.
I noticed one employee who was a labourer would receive considerably less than the others who were employed in a similar position and queried this with the MD. He told me that this particular employee who was what is now referred to as 'special needs/ learning difficulties' had a special agreement with his parents and the Union which would cover him being on a lower rate than his colleagues. I contacted his parents and the Union who both confirmed that no  such agreement had ever been made and that he was entitled to the basic Union rate at that time. National Graphical Association rates at that particular time.
Anyway upshot is I backed this lad and he took the Company for 65k in underpaid wages, overtime, shifts and pension payments. I discussed this with my wife before I pursued his case in court and she told me 'I had to do the right thing.'
knew I had to do the right thing and I'd appreciate it it if you didn't judge me the way you did above.

I don't know you and you don't know Henderson, a footballers career is incredibly short, they may have earned millions but millionaires also tend to spend big as well, it's generally over at the top level aged 35 (and can end any moment before that with injury), 30 odd years before everyone else has retired. He's more than entitled to go and collect his pension pot in Saudi Arabia if they're stupid enough to pay such wages, he's done his bit for the gay community, much more than most players, I don't see it as being hypocritical of him to go and play there, he hasn't changed his mind on what he believes has he, whether he goes there or not the status quo in in the middle east is not going to change. It seems like pure jealousy to me and all of this he sold his soul nonsense is laughable. He doesn't own the gay community anything . His priority is his family and their families future who are all not set for life for generations to come.

Practically nobody in the same position is going to turn down 350 grand a week in their 30 in any occupation when offered, don't know why Liverpool fans are so upset anyway, he was on the decline in his last 2 seasons, looked almost surplus to requirements, have upgraded their midfield, back fighting for the title and have moved on, all after which Henderson had already given the best years of his career to the club.
Report duffy December 27, 2023 1:41 AM GMT
What it appears has happened is that his open support to the gay community was simply an act by someone who had spotted an easy opportunity to appear to be one of the good guys and something that would derive a heap of praise, it's simply an ego thing, I don't believe he sold his soul because I don't believe his soul was wedded to it in the first place and sure enough as soon as it was put to the test it was exposed.

He deserves criticism because he was someone who wanted and did garner adulation by defending a cause that he didn't really care about and then tried to say that he didn't go for the money but because Liverpool didn't want himLaughLaugh
Report duffy December 27, 2023 1:48 AM GMT
don't know why Liverpool fans are so upset anyway,

They are upset because in years to come when they are down the pub getting nostalgic ad discussing their great players down the years he would have got a mention as a good honest example setting pro who did everything right and was one of a few that would be respected by fans from other clubs as well as their own, a player that as a fan you were proud that he was one of your team...Liverpool fans would be sad that he's pi55ed all over that.
Report lurka December 27, 2023 2:47 PM GMT
Henderson had 2 years left on his Liverpool contract, but was well past his best. I'm of the view that he always held them back despite them winning big pots when he was there. They could have done better as he was a technically limited player. All the media could really say about him was that he motivated his teammates and tried hard! You don't hear that said about many PL/CL captains as their best trait. Maybe a captain of a team who avoids relegation.

He and the Saudis did Pool a big favour getting 2 years of his wages off the books and they even got a fee in for him. He'd likely have run his contract down and been a waste of wages for 2 years. Pool fans should be delighted.

Henderson's not on 700k a week, it's 350k

the mistake he made was not admitting straight up he was going for the money, same as these liv Golfers nearly all just waffling and not saying they're there for the money only. I don't actually see the point in the Saudi's trying to attract these players, their crowds are terrible even for Ronaldo side, when I've seen clips the stands are not full, which is odd as football is supposed to be their number 1 sport and they have 35 million people, country like holland has half that and all their stadiums are full and close to. Just an ego boost for the wealthy over there, I think Porcupine is correct and eventually they will get bored of it but it might take some time, difference with China however was their clubs were going bust, the reigning champions even went bust a couple of years ago, players like Tevez were taking the piss talking about going their on holiday and turning up overweight, in the end they put a tax on any purchase of foreign players over 5 million where they then had to pay an equal amount to the Chinese FA, and a salary cap of 3 mil to overseas signings. This was all in the midst of covid which had an effect.

Still don't buy all this hypocrit stuff though, he doesn't suddenly agree with anti gay stances in Saudi, he's just taking their money and will eventually come back to England and spend it there.

Henderson is understood to have been advised that up to the end of last year, pro rata he must have spent no more than 21 days in Britain if he wished to be considered non-resident for tax reasons.
