In the Euros final in spite of him not because of him. We were utterly dominant after he (finally) brought Grealish on. One in front, he took him off again, sat back and Demark all but got back into it. We'd have scored more had he just carried on. Then he cost us the final with the insane late substitution of Rashford, expected to sit on the bench for 119 minutes then come on and win it. The choice of Saka to take one almost as bad. The guys who had earned the draw were the ones to go on and win it or lose it on penalties. What Southgate did was sheer madness. Last night was a lost opportunity to build momentum.
Report stewarts rise November 26, 2022 12:38 PM GMT
Do agree with you all, it's boring defensive minded football, he manages like he played, a very average midfield player when Villa signed him, they bought Mark Draper from Leicester on the same day and Southgate made Draper look like a superstar, but Brian Little dropped him back into centre back and with God and Ugo alongside him nurtured him into a very decent centre back.
His general mindset is defensively, doesn't like flair players just calls them (Grealish) and (Foden) on near the end, pathetic really. Sure we said the same about ramsey though after a boring 0-0 with Uruguay and just a thunderbolt from Charlton getting us past Mexico 1-0 in 1st 2 games, who was this kid Ball, who was Peters, where were the wingers, why wasn't Greaves playing etc, but turned out Ramsey knew better than all of us! Just a thought!

Fortunate not fortuitous. (Assuming you mean lucky and not that it happened by chance). A fortuitous event can be considered to have given rise to good or bad luck, or just to be neutral, but it's not inherently lucky in itself.

You just know he’s thinking this game screams a midfield three of Rice , Henderson and Philips with Sterling and White giving protection to Trippier and Shaw.

Stick Stones as sweeper behind Dier and McGuire to pick up Moore’s flick-ons and it’s job done.

Can’t see worse than 0-2 with that formation although I grant you the bench would be a tad lightweight!

I've rinsed Southgate on here for not being a top manager and not being cut out for this level, but two things, 1. I'd love him to prove me and everyone else wrong, it's nothing against him personally as he seems like one of life's good guys, and you'd have to be pretty sadistic to want to see someone like that fail, but much more importantly, 2, you can never question his bottle, courage and bravery in when it really matters, his in-game decision making might leave a lot to be desired (you'd like to think he's learnt), but he grabbed that ball in 96 and told Venables he was taking that pen, he was confident and he took responsibility when his country needed him most, unlike Anderton, McManaman and Ince who all could have taken it but didn't volunteer, in Ince's case he didn't even have the courage to face the goal when pens were being taken. Southgate is a lot of things but lacking in character and a bottle job is not one of them. Never seen a look of devastation on a players face than his when he realised he'd missed. That was the first international tournament I remember, the next was World Cup 98, suffice to say I wasn't looking forward to Euro 2000. I thought there was an unwritten rule where we had to go to penalties in every tournament. It's also worth stating that Southgate at the time, was the youngest player in the starting line up and the least capped.

Didn't like him raking in the money afterwards from pizzahut and ballboy shoe adverts but tbh, I'd have done the same thing. Kind Regards.

how'd you mean hgs, man took ball, man put ball on spot, man kicked ball, 25 million people watching, that's bravery under pressure, right up there with the bomb defusal squads and the SOS, unlike Ince, man who was sat down with two balls on the grass instead, and neither were footballs. Southgate is the sort of leader of men that you'd want in the trenches with you, much like Martin Keown, they wouldn't put their heads above the parapet every now and then, wimpishly firing at the enemy, they'd be jumping up and down catching bullets with their teeth. They'll be a new England manager by the end of the year and if he can add Southgate's balls to his tactical nous we might win the Euro's in Germany in 2 and half years time. Kind Regards.

Look a the teams he's beaten at majors versus the teams he's lost to. That is not overachievement. It is nothing special whatsoever, especially with home advantage at the euros. The draws he's got are entirely responsible for any misguided sense of overachievement.

England have been one of the best in the world at beating inferior sides for a long time. They were unbeaten in 20 qualifiers under Hodgson and won 10/10 in one campaign. It is not a barometer of where they are vis-a-vis the top sides like Brazil, Spain, France. They can't seem to hold their own in midfield against top sides and generally get dominated. But they took the lead very early against Croatia and Italy. Perhaps if they take the lead in the second half they might have enough to hold on.

Southgate sees football different than most fans.
He played in defence in an average villa side.
He never went out with tactics of trying to win a game. He spent years going out trying to not lose. Everything about his tactics screams don’t lose. He isn’t a winner. Dosent know how to win. Never been in a team that makes subs to try and finnish teams off.
He also believes that if you don’t lose you can’t be knocked out,bar pens or a fluky last minute goal.
Also by losing gallantly he also keeps his job,
He onLy ever makes subs as a last ditch attempt when he’s run out of ideas.
So it’s always 85 mins etc.

How could anyone watch England v USA and believe Jordan Henderson is needed. Desperate stuff

He slavishly sticks with Kane. Proven in the last 2 tournaments he isn’t good enough. He’s kept on the pitch for 120 mins to take a pen,4 touches in their box in 2 games,1 game we scored 6.
His office is closest to spurs,so he’s probably seen more spurs games than any other.

2 tournaments Kane has proven he’s not good enough, but on he ploughs.

He’s not really arsed about front 3. He’s obsessed with defence and midfield. It’s all he knows. Hoping Kane might fluke him a goal.
We should of won at least 3/4 world cups, but weak management cost us.

If Senegal don’t beat us,then the next team will,

Other USA game was there to win,so to was the Italy euros, but Gareth only sees how can we stop them attacking us,

Jordan Pickford is an accident waiting to happen, that’s how we ll go out,

Japan at 85/1 might surprise.

6 [six] goals scored against Iran and Star Striker Harry didn't have a single shot, not even one off-target.  People will say he was 'drawing defenders out' and other fancy sh*t but for a striker to not have a single shot in a game where his side is rampant is appalling.

Report stu December 5, 2022 1:47 AM GMT
I have to laugh about the claims his good runs have been beating poor sides - those same sides have historically knocked us out of tournaments so many times, maybe even qualifying defeats. They are all still international sides that have to be beaten and we haven't always managed that, even against so-called 'weaker' sides.

We may well lose against France, having said that, as may the entire WC opposition potentially. That would be no shame in a WC QF against the holders.
Report PorcupineorPineapple December 5, 2022 9:20 AM GMT
The idea that this team is good despite Southgate is laughable. He's a very good coach for these. It's not the most exciting football by any means but he has them in a good shape, they all know their jobs and play as a team. It's not a collection of talents like some teams, or a team set up to serve one or two stellar talents but a squad of generally 7/10 players who become 8.5/10 when put together.

Still think France are better and should knock them out but I bet they're more worried about the tie than England are currently. France are still a bit disunited and if you can keep M'Bappe quiet in the opening stages you may see their heads drop as they start looking round for who to blame rather than digging in.
Report lurka December 5, 2022 9:36 AM GMT
I highly doubt France are more worried. They will see themselves as superior technically and tactically like the Croatians and Italians did and will be licking their lips at the prospect of facing England, who they will see as overhyped (eg farmers' league). Don't be surprised if Deschamps gets the better of Southgate tactically too.
Report 3 valleys December 5, 2022 10:15 AM GMT
You'd think Deschamps would encourage Mbappe to come off his favoured wing position and play on the shoulder of the CB's as he has much too much pace for Maguire and Stones and play their game accordingly while England will try and defend deep and counter
