Are there any things commonly said in football which you dislike? I'll give two examples which irk me.
1. "I think that TeamA will get a result today". Stupid expression. Of course they will get a result. Win, draw and lose are all results. Unless the game is abandoned all teams playing will get a result.
2. (for competitions with a group phase). "I think that TeamA will get out of the group", or "I think that TeamB will fail to get out of the group". ALL teams will get out of the group, the alternative is that they stay in the group forever. Whether the team progresses to the next phase is the point, even if they finish last they have got out of the group.
I know that I'm being picky, and that some will call me a grumpy sod (probably true), but these saying just annoy me/

Pushing for pedant of the year with those choices Markz. And thats coming from a serious contender. We know what they mean. But in the spirit of the moment I'll suggest "favourite left/right foot".
"They're putting the ball into areas" or "he needs to put the ball into an area". Wherever the ball goes, it's going to be in an area. Meaningless statements like these are beloved of pundits, and I find them annoying at times.
I have always wondered why the keeper shouts "Away!!" when a dangerous looking cross comes in...
What does he expect his defender to do ...? Maybe one day a keeper will shout, "Chest it down and dribble it about a bit" in the box when the cross is going near his defender

When did 'Low Block' creep in? who coined it, only started to hear in the last couple of seasons or so, it's just a sophisticated term for parking the bus.
I hate to hear the commentator say "There's definitely more goals in this game" (when I'm on overs)

That's unsaveable / unstopable.

Why is TAA at Liverpool just known as Trent by the commentators? They don't say 'Harry' for Kane etc

Oh and any commentator/pundit mentioning the 'Group of Death' should ideally be on Death Row.
Every time a good goal is scored and the pundits say"If Messi scored that we'd be going on about it" whilst at the same time going on about it.
Not really an expression but when they come out with stats like eg 'Forest haven't beaten Leeds in the Premier league for 26 years' and don't tell you that they've only played 4 times in the PL since and not since 99.

100% on that one. But for different reasons - th epoint is irrelevant. Totally different sets of players, management set ups, even stadiums in most cases. Todays result is tomorrows statistic.

Haaland would have never been able to have the freedom of the box in those days, hed have had lumps kicked out of him and hed have started sulking after the first tackle in my opinion
The game is beyond a joke for me in that regard, youve got a game that protects mard ar3es like Ronaldo/Messi/Haaland yet youve got a system that always wants to chalk goals off and keep the scorelines down

My hate is the over use of the phrases like “hes not human” and “hes out of this world”

But the not human thing is just designed to make us all feel totally fooking inadeqate ffs, we cant possibly ever be at that level and to not even try
Fact is.. get those lot down to a park game and see how long they last when they aint got the “protection” of the fairy game they get to play in

Not sure it fits in this thread, but players not celebrating a goal to "show respect" to the other team and their fans. It's a football game, celebrate it as you would any other goal.

When commentators reel off stats about past records between teams. Unless they refer to roughly the same squads and/or management, ie recent records, then the stats are totally irrelevant. If Southampton have not won at Aresenal since 1952 or whatever, what possible relevance can that have on today's outcome?
If a team has recently been beaten by their next opponents, commentators always say that "they are out for revenge". It is not revenge, which sounds like something from gang warfare, they simply want to win the game.
