A couple of good games against Germany and Ukraine at the Euros. Aside from that England have been poor for a couple of years now.
turns out everyone is rubbish...
apparently Germany were rubbish, Italy now, Spain during the Euros , Brazil, Argentina....
not quite sure who some have down as the class apart currently...which might be the reality...maybe levelling up does exist in football... or down of course...

England do look very average every time I see them play under Southgate. Not sure how this team got to a final and semi-final in recent times
He's a very good man manager but is horrific tactics wise. England need 3 central midfielders to retain the ball better but he is infatuated with playing 2 with 2 wingbacks. This is grand when the opposition do not retain the ball well but you are in trouble against the better teams who will average 60%+ possession and the 2 wingbacks get pressed back into defensive positions. this leaves the midfield isolated. (Eg Croatia, Italy etc..)

Germany were awful and we wontnsee that again for a while Ukraine... never see such a pathetic last 8 side Denmark were decent but were in our backyard and ran out of steam
Southgate has benefitted from decent draws as well though
Eventually his luck will run out in that regard esp if they slip down the rankings ti say 11th-16th

Belgium of course battered by the Netherlands (average) as well the other night...just adding to earlier post..
England aren't anything special and I've argued in the past that Southgate has had draws and some home advantage others would have dreamed of..
good man manager as has been said on here ..but it is very important in the international game to create the right environment so players want to play for you. ...tactically very average... conservative in approach which is frustrating but increasingly may need to be with defensive options available..and crucially still need that central mf that can run a game for some fairly obvious attacking talent... still don't have one though in time though Bellingham is a huge prospect

having had the Eriksson clique, the Capello boot camp and the vanilla Hodgson with far better talent I'm not so sure Kris' but I guess we won't find out...

I didnt watch the game nor saw the booing before the game, until I saw it on the news.
I hope Southgate doesnt include all the England fans when he says 'its why we do it' (meaning the act of taking the knee)
He needs to wind it in if he or anyone thinks they can stop the booing of an act of compliance forced on other people.

DOUBLED 05 Jun 22 14:40 Does Declan Rice always pass sideways and backwards ? West Ham value him at 120 million
Have you ever seen him play before?...... clearly not if you think he just passes sideways and backwards.

Erikson had a very good squad but by the time of Capello we had a poor England squad that was well passed it's best, and literally nobody of top quality was coming through. Over a 5-10 year period after the likes of Lampard, Gerrard, Beckham, Scholes, Ferdinand, Terry, Cole, even Barry and Carrick who did we have coming through? Rooney was at his best aged 18-22, Joe Hart, James Milner (who actually turned out to be best of the lot outside Rooney) Oxlade Chamberlain, Wilshere (like Rooney was best as a teenager), Sturridge, Welbeck and Phil Jones! Hodgson inherited a generation where no one had come through, and only Sterling was coming through. Southgate has a far better squad.

Capello in 2010 still had Rooney, Lampard, Gerrard, Ashley Cole, John Terry, Carrick (whom he often chose not to use) playing at somewhere close to their peak - would accept a lack of obvious younger talent.
Hodgson had Stirling, Kane, Hart, Rooney...Rose and Walker playing at their best around around 2016 at the Euros ...people can easily laugh at mentions of Hart and Rose but both were exceptional for their clubs around that time...likewise players like Sturridge, Glen Johnson had some very high levels around that time of their career.. Lallana, Wiltshire, Oxalade Chamberlain all very highly touted players...Barkley... the fact that many never lived up to billing doesn't mean they weren't very talented prospects...
how many of the current crop will be viewed in the rear view mirror as great players ... Kane (constantly criticied at the Euros , Stirling (always criticised regardless) , hopefully Foden (barely played at the Euros) Stones ? Maguire ? Shaw ? Pickford ? Henderson ? Rice ? Grealish ? Phillips ? Trippier ? Connor Coady ?

Rooney was well past his best by 2016. Hart's stats are truly awful and he was vastly overated. Two years running in the worst 10 keepers in the top European Leagues. The worst regular England keeper in my memory. Rose was just ok. Kyle Walker is/was a top player. Kane and Sterling are top players but they were not at their peak. Sterling was shot to bits mentally in 2016. Kane wasn't at the 2014 WC. He'd only just arrived on the scene

The current squad I assume as close to full strength as currently possible.

Defenders: Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Conor Coady (Wolverhampton Wanderers), Marc Guéhi (Crystal Palace), Reece James (Chelsea), James Justin (Leicester City) Harry Maguire (Manchester United), John Stones (Manchester City), Fikayo Tomori (AC Milan), Kieran Trippier (Newcastle United), Kyle Walker (Manchester City), Ben White (Arsenal)
Midfielders: Jude Bellingham (Borussia Dortmund), Conor Gallagher (Crystal Palace, loan from Chelsea), Mason Mount (Chelsea), Kalvin Phillips (Leeds United), Declan Rice (West Ham United), James Ward-Prowse (Southampton)

We did have some highly touted players, but history has shown us they weren't nearly as good as they were built up to be. Kane and Sterling have proved they are top players, Henderson and Walker too imo

We won't know how good they'll end up being but I think we can agree that is no comparison between Erikson's squads and Hodgson's. Capello is somewhere in between, but he only had 2 players under 24 in his WC squad. Lennon and Hart. Which kind of shows what Hodgson inherited.

that's probably the worst midfield England have had in my lifetime...not that I don't think some our decent players and others have high bar potential but that's no different to what was being said about the previous groups
some earlier omissions from Hodgson's highly touted group....Rashford, Dele Alli and Eric Dier.

Southgate is a "safe pair of hands" ,ticks all the boxes and is bloody useless........failed to win the Euros with the best squad and who can forget Trippier playing left side wingback or even playing at all.

To his credit, Southgate almost achieved what we've been crying out for. New blood, rather than keep going back to the same old losers. It's a shame that's as far is goes with him and under his management I don't see us winning anything, but totally respect his effort. Need the same mentality with a bit more guile.
