We had a good team in 1966
and 1970

Then again in 1990,when they said
we had an easy draw...

And now I think we are pretty strong
and can compete.

We had home advantage in 66 and 96
and again now.

96 proved home advantage alone
is not enough.

Lou ffs, put your sensible head on eh?

The Groups for the last World Cup were done by ranking and were much of a muchness, the teams that qualified from the Groups were the ones expected too, the only surprise was Germany finishing bottom against Sweden, Mexico and South Korea, did you think that was an easy Group? ? Which Group do you think was easy? England group was no easier or harder that that of any of the seeded teams, thats the way the draw goes.

England haven't had much creativity since Gazza when they got to 2 SFs and lost both on pens to the Germans.

It is more the draws than anything else that has got them to 2 more SFs under Southgate, but you can only beat what's in front of you.

A lot of people getting carried away and underestimating Denmark, including the market. Tonight's game was the same performance with little creativity in midfield against a team who couldn't defend aerial balls. Even at with an early 1 goal lead and second half with a 2 goal lead England didn't create to much apart from set-pieces. He didn't really let the shackles off the players at all or play differently when ahead. He switched to a 4-4-2 for the final 15 mins of the first half because Ukraine were actually outplaying England and getting into goalscoring positions. He reverted at half time, but you can see that he's still more concerned about the opposition even when ahead.

Denmark are nothing like Ukraine. They look a lot more solid at the back with 2 dominant centre-halves and are able to defend set-pieces. They are also one of the best attacking teams left and are potent in attack and shoot a lot. From what we've seen tonight, Southgate will still play cagey with a 1 goal lead and invite teams onto him. England's defence wasn't really troubled tonight but there were still mistakes from Walker and Pickford that could have been costly. The way Southgate plays you need a really poor team to lose by more than 2 to this England side and we got that tonight. It doesn't seem likely to me that England will be comfortable against Denmark even with a 1 goal lead and not likely either that they'll get a 2 goal lead until late perhaps. I don't think the prices reflect that.

Southgate is a Vodoo master. Controls the draw with his art of black magic. If England would have fallen in the other half would have been out by now. He fo0ked their best chance up when he was gifted a world cup semi against the mighty nation of Croatia, comparable to Wales in size and they went out. Good chance the might of the 5 million Danes will ko them as well tbh.
Ukraine Sweeden Colombia on pens and home match with Germany their knock out stage route to 2 major semis is 1 ell of a easy ride that wont keep happening.

Playing at Wembley helped, but pretty sure being told we'd get Germany in first knockout game wouldn't have seemed an 'easy' draw in the schedule, before the tourny started.

Getting beyond that game, it's been a decent draw though.
Report HGS July 4, 2021 11:17 AM BST
Yes, the semis and final should they get there will be played at Wembley  but England are not the only side to have enjoyed home advantage in this tournament. Italy, Spain, Germany, Holland, Denmark and England all had home games in the group stages. Even Scotland had 2 games at home. Not been all England for home advantage.
Report scandanavian_haven July 4, 2021 11:20 AM BST

The hidden advantage of being at home is the travel. Teams normally don't have to travel like this mid-tournament. That's as much if not more of an advantage than being at home the longer the tournament goes on.

Denmark being sent out to Baku and back for a QF is scandalously unfair and a major advantage for England.

New York to LA is 6 hours
Report CLYDEBANK29 July 4, 2021 12:35 PM BST
Incidentally Home adv in the MLS is about 0.5 of a goal, which is as high as it gets.  But the reason for this is that you are only allowed 2 or 3 charter flights a season.  I'm sure the Danish had every assistance in making the journey as smooth as possible.  Arguably, given Italy's COVID position on UK tourists, the English teams journey might have been worse.
Report lurka July 4, 2021 1:11 PM BST
Even the host nations in 1994, 2014 and 2018 travelled more distance and more frequently than England did. Every team travelled, even the hosts. England have to travel a short trip only once. The game v Germany should have been played in Dublin.

It is a big advantage to not have to do that as much as fatigue etc is building the longer the tournament goes on. There are already fine margins on the purely sporting side so anything else is a big factor, even 1% but it is a lot more than that.
