Running around like a headless chicken flying into tackles will just get you sent off these days, if you mean there's no inspiring carahcters or leaders then yes you are right, there isn't. They were absolutely gutless tonight and lacking in passion and leadership. That comes from within the player, and also because the "manager" is a sterile, clueless, FA yes man.

These players have been managed by Guardiola, Klopp, Mourinho, Tuchel, Bielsa, and other managers who are not at that level, but who are actually proper managers.

You may be right, but even at the lower end of the scale 200 k = over 10 million a year which doesn't include all the other image rights/ endorsements etc. A quick search online reveals in his career so far he has earnt over 57 million quid which is symptomatic of why many of these internationals don't care about anything other than their next club contract and instagram followers where much of their revenue is generated

That said, you have to find somebody with a proven track record, a philosophy, and someone who the players can buy into. It seems to have worked well with Mancini. International football isnlt the same as club football, basically if you're a decent footballing power, you're gonna qualify, you're also more than likely to progress to knock out phases, so then you're looking at knock out games - who can win those?

You need to have good enough players, and you need to build a team that can win one-off games, it's not like club football where over 30 odd games generally the best teams win. You need a lot more luck in running, but i'd say it's best not to start by appointing a PR friendly clown with zero track record. But this is the FA, and they sacked Bobby Robson  and wouldn't employ Coughie because of politics.

The thing is, when compared to club football, Int football is a a lot more of a lottery, and teams can sometimes just coalesce during a tournament and win it, but i'd say it's best to give yourself the best chance of doing so, by employing a manager with a clue.

If you hadn't watched the match and just picked up on the news report, you would think that Scotland 'won' the game when it reality at the moment, England are in much the stronger position with their 4 points already in the bag. Scotland have to face Croatia and look like they will have another job shutting out an attacking force whereas they now have to go for the win. As do Croatia, so could mean for a good game.

They are both very moderate teams and any idea that either of them will get past the next round even if they get through the group stage is laughable. Wales are far superior to either of them and changing managers does not change the players. So long as the players in the top 6 clubs of the premier league have to play 50 games a year, we will never have a decent team in June. If I was Southgate, I would start the next game with all of the players in the squad who have not started either of the first 2 games apart from Pickford and then bring on Stirling, Foden etc. at half time. Most of them are mentally and physically exhausted. Some credit is due to the defence that has not conceded a goal but we have the most ineffective attack in the competition-apart from Scotland!!

Why does anyone need to choose club OR international management. Managers in the past have combined the two roles, let's face it international management is just games every other summer and as a club manager presumably you will be watching looking at players as part of your remit anyway.

Sage I read your comments about Wales and England but you are sadly misguided. England played poorly last night, that is true, but that happens. Southgate knew this was his chance to guarantee getting to the next round and his team played accordingly. Scotland needed to win and they played accordingly. Southgate will take that, happily. He's through to the next round.
More importantly your comments about Scotland should point you in the direction of Croatia. Croatia are a much better team than Scotland, they need a win and they are odds against to get it. Scotland are around 2/1 to beat Croatia but I simply cannot see that happening. They played above themselves against England and that is making their price ridiculously short. But don't listen to me. The betting shows Croatia 12/1 to reach the semi-finals and Scotland 90s. Croatia 33s to reach the final and Scotland 200/1. Yet next week in a head to head decider they are almost inseparable in the betting. Makes you think, doesn't it?

Why would men in their physical prime be " exhausted" playing 50 games in a year? Do you think other teams have players who don't play a similar number of games? Paid millions of pounds over years for kicking a ball around once a week on a years average for 90 minutes and they are " physically and mentally " exhausted lol

Imagine how these poor lambs would get on doing a 50 hour week in a factory- they would probably collapse on life support for their " exhaustion "

Hi Brains, how are you? You can only play as well as the other team lets you and I thought Scotland played well. I also think Southgate is playing the long game and didn't want to take any chances. All matches cannot be a walkover. I think Scotland will find things completely different against Croatia.
I did watch the France v Germany game and they looked good teams but if they play England I don't think they will be allowed to play like that.

I agree mostly brigust.  England seemed to play with fear last night, just hoping to pick up a win but more for the point. Dreadful strategy really and Southgate needs to take a long, hard look at himself in my view.
