Greg Clarke has resigned as Football Association chairman following the language he used when talking to MPs about diversity.
Clarke used the term "coloured footballers" in a reference to black players when talking to members of the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport select committee. He apologised after being prompted to say sorry by MP Kevin Brennan. Clarke had been talking via video link about the racist abuse of players by trolls on social media. "People can see if you're black and if they don't like black people because they are filthy racists, they can abuse you anonymously online," he said. He had earlier spoken of the need to attract people into the sport from a range of communities. "If you go to the IT department of the FA, there's a lot more South Asians than there are Afro-Caribbeans. They have different career interests," said Clarke. He prompted further criticism when referring to gay players making a "life choice" and a coach telling him young female players did not like having the ball hit hard at them. "We can confirm that Greg Clarke has stepped down from his role as our chairman," said an FA statement. "Peter McCormick will step into the role as interim FA chairman with immediate effect and the FA Board will begin the process of identifying and appointing a new chair in due course." Following his resignation, Clarke said: "My unacceptable words in front of Parliament were a disservice to our game and to those who watch, play, referee and administer it. This has crystallised my resolve to move on. "I am deeply saddened that I have offended those diverse communities in football that I and others worked so hard to include." |

There are certain people within Football who need to pick up on any minor transgression to justify their position and inflated salary.
Greg Clarke will be seen as a dinosaur by some people, regardless of wether he is doing a good job or not, purely because he is white middle class. Clarke will now be ostracized and will never have a role in football again. Compare his remarks with those of the former Kick it Out advisor Paul Elliott, who spent less than 18 months out of football despite his use of the n word aimed at a fellow footballer. Elliott resigned from his roles with The FA, as a member of the Association's Judicial Panel and as a nominated member of UEFA committees on 23 February 2013. He also left his role at Kick It Out. The FA accepted his resignation following a reported text conversation in which "discriminatory abusive comments" were made to fellow former footballer Richard Rufus.[11] On 15 July 2014, Elliott rejoined the Inclusion Advisory Board.[12] He was made chairman of the IAB in 2018. |

I remember as youngster in the 1950s my father telling me that you must call black people coloured as it was offensive to call them black. That was what was taught in those days and some people have just never moved with the times. It must be 40 years or more since I use the coloured word.

a minority group has authorities management etc all on the run - if you mention it you can lose your job - Goebbels would be proud of them
|
|
By:
If you have ever lived and worked amongst black people then you will know that the term "coloured" is considered offensive by them and so will not be used.

People who want POWER will be offended by it.
Normal peope couldnt give a fck. Therefore if they are all offended, they all want POWER. |

This is a very well paid man in a very high profile job who, three years ago, in front of the same parliamentary committee, described institutional racism in football as "fluff".
He later apologised after being chastised by MPs and being reminded that language matters. It would appear that he didn't learn any lessons from the incident three years ago. |
|
By:
To be honest I find it incredible that a man of 63 in his position would use such an outdated term and I'm a good deal older.

no one dare speak out no one dare debate - you must realise that a lot of people can lose their jobs by suggesting anything is wrong or that certain groups behave in certain ways in certain circumstances - you neve see them crying out about the massive knife crime, gun crime, killings etc in london etc
it just wouldn't be popular as it is a nasty part of life in certain parts of london one could go on and on but then I might not last on here |

The same thing happened last year with Amber Rudd. Big deal.
A simple apology and move on but no some want blood. Okay to rubbish our heritage but one word out of place and its a crime. I think it was used until about 10 years ago then suddenly deemed offensive. Why it's offensive has never properly been explained. |

as a bloke (am i allowed to call myself that?) of around his age i can honestly say i thought that term was on the acceptable list.was this not the case?.we are at the stage now where we will have to have a daily update after the weather forecast on the new terms or words that we can use.it is a very sad state of affairs when folk come on the tv crying and wanting someone sacked because of "misspoking".well i am quite sure our much loved prime minister did it not so long ago.
|
|
By:
I think if you are that out of touch with society that you thought this word was still acceptable you should be in a retirement home and not in a position of any power over other individuals. You've lost your cognitive faculties and can be forgiven for misspeaking.
|
|
By:
so a man who says a coloured person instead a person of colour must lose his job? a sad world we live in.lets hope you never make a mistake.

The term he used was unacceptable in the circles where I worked about 40 years ago. I don't think at one time you could say "people of colour" either but that appears to have become OK relatively recently. It may look like nitpicking, and I'm not going to argue it isn't,but somebody in Clark's position really should know the current situation.
|
|
By:
Clark did know and said he stumbled over words.could well be true.
Doesn't excuse his attacks on young girls and gays. Had he been drinking or did he just fancy drawing his pension from the FA and went for it? |

I think rappers or others using the n word and glorifying violence etc. should also be condemned. 2 wrongs do not make a right.

let's face it, this guy using the coloured term was made an error and I've heard this term used by black people in interviews so it's hardly a hanging offence. The people that are "offended" are the same sort of people who were demanding that the journalist who interviewed a historian who blurted out a racist comment should be sacked for inciting racism as if he was a fortune teller predicting the comment. A simple apology would have sufficed but of course that is never enough.. people dedicate their lives to being outraged. Why anyone in any public office would want to go on soical media or do any interview unless absolutely necessary is beyond me where we live in an age of songs like " baby its cold outside" viewed by the mentally ill as incitement to rape and evidence of men dominating women.

By:
We have TV series such as The Wire, a great watch, but many scenes have black people using the N word so presumably this is fine. Then of course there are Premiership footballers with tatooes of guns clearly visible which is also apparently beyond reproach. No doubt there are perfectly acceptable explanations.

A few hundred years ago women with black hair of dubious character were burnt as witches. The courts of that time would impose other sentences to people which involved weights attached to their legs and the prognosis of the court consisting of all law creators/ dignitaries was if the defendant floated "the devil " was keeping them up and if they drowned they weren't possessed but at least were given a decent burial. Every cloud has a silver lining and all that.
In 2020 we look back at those times shaking our heads with laugher at how society could be so stupid which future generations will be doing on the woke era of 2020 where even the vice president is too ashamed to categorise her gender on twitter with " she/her" added to the intro incase offence is taken. It's utterly ridiculous of course but until society evolves and the average IQ of a typical human being increases, we have to put up with it. |

A person of colour is said and people smile encouragingly in suits nodding silently as the correct terminology is adhered to. If someone says a coloured person, a large mothership computer flares up in witch central with an enraged student peering through thick reading glasses with a smug narcissistic grin and slowly types " burnthebast*rd# "

wolf...You make a good point with regard to the term "person of colour" and I don't know how that term came about other than to say it presumably covers all people who are of a dark complexion. As we know "coloured" has it's connections with South Africa during apartheid and so is discredited.

How long til we won't be able to use words such as cockneys, geordies , scousers, etc?

I am of welsh heritage and i did feel very uncomfortable about the way the sun newspaper used to get stuck into old neil kinnock.
W*lsh w*indbag. And all that. Happened today I think i might have recoure to m'learned friends. I do remember jim davidson, who has changed his act to go with the times, saying that the people he felt sorry for were the welsh. Not allowed to make irish jokes any more but any old two bit commedian from jimmy carr to paul merton loves having a pop. Like to see them try that down me old mans rugby club. |
