No gloating here, dreading getting Atletico if, and that's a big if, City get past Real. Just thought Klopps comments were a bit cynical and disrespectful to Atletico, and Simeone in particular. Simeone has always played that way regardless of what players he has at his disposal. I guess playing in a league with Real and Barca limits his options.

The warning signs should have been clear and obvious when playing Atletico Madrid whom have an excellent record against English teams and last beaten by the mighty Bolton Wanderers over a decade ago and for Klopp and Owen to poo poo there playing style is laughable, what has there playing style got to do with you ? Nothing ! you knew how they play and failed to deal with it so congratulate them and show some dignity as you have been in the game long enough to know not everyone plays champagne football.
Report lurka March 12, 2020 10:28 AM GMT
Yes just comes across as sour grapes. Give out at the start of the tournament if you have an issue with it. The fact is Liverpool got beaten by a poorer team who seek to rely on their strength and punish their opponent's weaknesses and mistakes. The found that weakness in the goalkeeper last night and a defensive mistake in the first leg. Llorente had scored something like 1 goal in 6,000 minutes of club football and then he got 2 in 10 mins. If you make mistakes like that and Atletico defend well then you are asking to be knocked out. And they are the last team in Europe you want to go behind to. Klopp giving out about them just reflects his disappointment imo, he is not the type of guy who will blame anyone other than himself for last night once the dust settles.

I'd imagine Klopp is privately kicking himself that he didn't get a better keeper in as 2nd choice. He's already learned how important the position is, esp in a knockout comp where you have minimal time to recover from mistakes. I don't believe he really has that much of a problem with a team playing to their strength and not playing into their hands. Also allowing Liverpool to dominate possession and shots etc is actually Atletico's game plan, you hear so many supposed 'experts' go on about how dominant Liverpool were. Atletico would be happy defending a 1 goal lead for 180 mins. Find it arrogant when the bigger clubs lose and basically give out that the smaller club didn't play straight into their hands like complete idiots but I don't think that's the main issue for Klopp, he will blame himself more than anyone else.
Report ProSniper March 12, 2020 2:22 PM GMT
"team who seek to rely on their strength and punish their opponent's weaknesses and mistakes." Is that not what every team does? Whatever excuse you want to make for him, Klopp's reaction AFTER the event(when he was clearly aware of the task at hand BEFORE a ball was even kicked in the first leg) is pathetic. It would be like Guardiola bemoaning the fact that Klopp and his Pool side aren't taking them on in an end2end game, instead opting for a more defensive approach with sporadic pressing/counters..

Liverpool and its fans are just a very arrogant unit. This sort of sour grape talk after they've been dumped out only highlights the gross entitlement the club swaggers around with.
Report Wesdag March 12, 2020 2:26 PM GMT
Sport is all about playing to your strengths which is what Atletico did last night.
Report lurka March 12, 2020 7:10 PM GMT
Atletico do not play like that most of the time, generally only only against teams who are superior to them whose attack they fear and they are 100 times worse in a KO second leg with a lead than they are the rest of the time. They are defensive, but not like last night normally, they didn't even want the ball last night. Not every team plays to its strengths, there are plenty that don't. United under Mourinho and Arsenal under Emery are two recent examples.

I am not a Liverpool fan and I wasn't defending Klopp, the first thing I said was it came across as sour grapes. I was criticising him and every other manager who gives out about a team who plays defensive against a superior attacking team. As if they should instead play to their opponent's strength by playing an attacking open game, rather than playing to their own strength when the opposition need to score and they don't.

It wasn't Atletico's tactics that got pool knocked out anyway. It was missed chances, defensive mistakes and goalkeeping errors leading to goals, esp away goals. None of that was brought about by Atletico. Atletico are nowhere near as solid at the back this season as they were when they got to the two CL finals and Liverpool created enough chances and played well enough to win the tie. In the end Atletico took their chances and Pool didn't.
Report ProSniper March 12, 2020 7:58 PM GMT

Spot on again lurka. Despite playing well, we did not take our chances hence we were knocked out. That's life and thems the breaks.

I for one, thought Atletico played well last nite and DID NOT resort to their famed time wasting and use of the dark arts. As I mentioned before, Atletico were the one club I did not want in the last 16.

By that logic, every team who wins a game of football deserves to win, which is absolute nonsense.

They had the chances to score more and shouldn't have conceded the first 2 goals on the night. Yes, Atletico took their chances and fair play to them. But this was not the Simeone defensive shutout of previous years with completely different personnel at the back. Back then you would barely get chances to score if they were defending a lead. This was a team who were very lucky not to concede more and very lucky to score as many as they did and they rode that luck and capitalised on mistakes. Liverpool and Klopp only have themselves to blame and should be looking internally instead of bleating on about Simeone's tactics. Klopp will deal with the weakness get a new 2nd keeper, like he did when he replaced Karius.

Report ProSniper March 13, 2020 2:55 PM GMT
"every team who wins a game of football deserves to win, which is absolute nonsense." This is far from nonsense. This has always been my stance on it. Since the object of the game is to 'outscore your opponent' over a set period of time, every result is definitive

Until the rules get altered to where possession, chances created, shots on goal are of equal or greater importance than the actual SCORELINE, there's simply no room for bitter losers to legitimize their pathetic cries of "injustices".

Would'ves could'ves and should'ves are just another way to selectively pick out what you desired to happen, and ignore the reality of what did happen. And the apparent lack of understanding that a game moves in accordance with the need and desires of both sides, is shameful. Missed chances don't encourage radical change of approach. Only taken ones do.

One thing you're correct on is the defence of Atleti. Long gone are the days when Godin was marshalling the entire rearguard like a beastly trojan. Even though the defensive game plan under Simeone remains the same, the solidity they had before was much, much tougher to break than it is now. Another reason why pool should have no complaints. They've faced an inferior Atleti to when it peaked a couple seasons back.. and being the self-proclaimed "best team in the world" FAILED to KO them over a 2-legged affair(failing to register 1 single effort on target in the 1st leg)..no doubt arrogantly blase and dismissive about the importance of an away goal. If they weren't such entitled bastards, they might've just accepted this outcome with some humility, while acknowledging and working on their own deficiencies.
Report lurka March 13, 2020 3:34 PM GMT
I agree that Pool should have no complaints and I haven't heard many of their fans complaining TBH, most of them seem to think they should have taken their chances and didn't. As I said above, Klopp will not blame anyone but himself when the dust settles and he will deal with the issue and get a new reserve GK imo. I think his comments came out of frustration/heat of the moment rather than actually believing that Atleti did something wrong or should play in a different way. He seems to be a guy who doesn't have a big ego like Pep does and is aware of his side's flaws and deals with them (unlike Pep).

I get what your stance is on goals but I disagree that the best team always wins. I'm not even saying Liverpool deserved to win or KO Atleti, I've always said that if you have a leaky defence or GK in ties like this with the AGR then you are asking to be knocked out and City have seen this happen repeatedly over the last 3 years. You can probably multiply that for letting it happen against Atleti of all teams.

I'm not a Liverpool fan or a sore loser and I'm not sticking up for Klopp, I'm saying he was wrong to say it (but prob didn't really mean it) and that he and Liverpool fans should be looking to their own performance to figure out what went wrong. I don't think we disagree on that.
Report Angoose March 13, 2020 3:45 PM GMT
The nature of football, with its relatively low scoring system, provide conditions where the "best" team will fail to win on a reasonably regular basis.

High scoring sports, such as rugby, are less likely to have the "best" team failing to win.
