Must have been hiding under a rock in 2018 when we made the last four of The World Cup then.

Yes but what a run to the Semi's we had beating all those top teams on the way:

scotland done well to go out to shrewsbury under 12s on away goals, whilst wales losing in extra time to the dog and duck was surely
down to the rugby being on the big screen.

I watched Pickford when he played for my (currently league 2) side for a decent time (Bradford City).

He was decent enough, but wouldn't have ever predicted he'd become the England number 1 must admit, even knowing he would progress from then of course.
Report DAFFODIL1 February 2, 2020 12:18 PM GMT
Beating pub team's and then losing to a proper team is not progress!
Report stu February 2, 2020 12:29 PM GMT
He's a classic 'shot stopper' keeper, who struggles with other aspects of keeping.
Not sure if that makes him enough to be England's top keeper must admit.

Bute every team England qualify from the groups to a tournamnet.

Who did they beat to make the Euros 2020 finals?

Kazakhstan, San Morino, Belarus like teams?  Come on they must make the finals of a tournament every time but as soon as they meet a decent team ....................
Report betting_masta February 5, 2020 5:42 PM GMT
we lost 3 games out of 7 at that world cup .... says it all ... absolute carp    pickford is woeful . short & thick as mince, and actually almost verifiably crazy.  at least hart had a presence but  he was mentally absent as well

pope is probably a better all round keeper, or henderson, but at this point you have to blood an entirely new keeper again and all that time invested in pickford goes to waste so you might be better off just sticking with him even though he's sh1te.
Report stu February 7, 2020 6:00 PM GMT
England have lost to the sort of sides they beat at the last WC - Sweden, Columbia etc, so I never joined in the knocking of us only beating 'weaker' sides. Those sides were good enough to get through certain stages of the comp.

Yes, we lost to Croatia, but they got past some very strong sides too.

It was a relatively easy draw for England, but they did no worse (or better) than many decent England sides have done in the past.
Report stu February 7, 2020 6:10 PM GMT
TBF on the Pickford issue, in isolation he was decent at the WC.

I'd say he's been lot worse in the Premier

made 2 absolute howlers tonight, looks a very poor keeper, or maybe lacking confidence, 1st goal he tried playing it out in his box with a 2 players quickly closing him down, second goal he flapped at a overhead kick from close range. Don't know why Ancelotti didn't play Lossl?

Who is England's number 1 now? can't be him surely

he's not lacking confidence, he's got too much confidence. also dives when could stand still, eg second goal last, he's too much on his toes. like to see henderson given a chance but got to get into man u first team and if he cant replace de gea id be concerned.
Report ----you-have-to-laugh--- September 24, 2020 11:27 AM BST
Pope hasn't looked so good of late.

The guy at man utd must be poorly advised or overpaid.

One of pickford's big assets is the length he can punt the ball, maybe he should be allowed to use it rather than tika taka inside his 6 yard box.
Report smirnoff2therescue September 24, 2020 11:30 AM BST
Surprised Manure havent taken a few quid for DeGea tbh as he has been nowhere near the keeper he was prior to 2018 World Cup where his form/confidence seemed to slip dramatically but getting back to Pickford he is almost certain to retain n01 spot in Southgates line up as he has plenty credit in his international bank despite some of the alarming mistakes he consistently makes at club level ShockedShockedShocked
Report ----you-have-to-laugh--- September 24, 2020 11:36 AM BST
Southgate far more likely to use his long kicking.

And his weaknesses are far less likely to be shown up in internationals
Report Tiger Tiger September 24, 2020 2:45 PM BST
A goalkeeper is there to stop the ferking ball going into the net, for that you need arms, Pickford is garbage.
Report lurka September 24, 2020 10:23 PM BST
Pickford spills the ball into the danger area instead of pushing it wide. This will cost England in a big game eventually.

Re De Gea - he's on 350k a week. Not a matter of 'taking' money for him. You'd have to pay half his wages and let him leave for nothing to get rid. He'll be there til his contract ends. Plenty of players in the PL in that 'unsellable' bracket. Ozil and Mustafi are others, that's why you never hear of them being sold because they are unsellable due to high wages, despite being the first players you'd want rid of. Jones and Lingard are others at Man U. Nobody will pay them the same wage elsewhere, so why leave and take a pay cut when you can run down your contract and get even more as a free agent or else get offered a new contract before then?
Report roache September 24, 2020 10:30 PM BST
What could possibly go wrong Gareth with Pickford and Stones playing tippy tappy inside our own penalty area, maybe Gareth thinks just that the Dutch got really lucky being handed 2 goals on a plate in a semi final and that it will never happen again !
Report darren_discombobulates_sports September 24, 2020 10:33 PM BST
there's a European Championship next summer and places are up for grabs, they need to be playing to be picked. Ozil doesn't care because he's retired but there's not many examples like him, think China and middle east could afford these wages but doubt they'd want mugs like Mustafi, Ozil maybe but think he's rather stay in London.

England manager Gareth Southgate called Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford to offer his support after the Merseyside derby - and says his place in the national team is not under threat.

Pickford, 26, was criticised for a challenge on Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk which has ruled the defender out for months with a serious knee injury.

"I recognised it had been a very high-profile situation," said Southgate.

"I just felt it would be an appropriate call to make to see how he was."
