Ironically Betfair, who had since reinstated the Over  & under 3.5 Goals market, were too slow this time, and 1.06 & 1.01 were matched on the overs when it really was a goal, unless this was matched after the pen had been awarded and before the pen was scored? But who want such short odds on the assurance that the pen would be converted??

With the Handballs VAR is not the problem its those cretins from IFAB who joked up the new handball rules as they must not have a football brain between them and lets not forget our marvellous governing body FIFA has overseen IFAB create these new handball rules, what a great idea lets draw up 2 totally different sets of handball rules one for the defenders and one for the attackers what do they think our sport is American Football AngryAngryAngry
Report SontaranStratagem February 3, 2020 10:50 PM GMT
The rules are dense, and then you've got VAR making up their own interpretation as well

I thought Europe wouldn't be as bad as our lot but its just as ridiculous ffs
Report Rider February 4, 2020 9:08 AM GMT
var may not be the ones making up this silly handball rule that everyone knows will be changed once its passed a mountain of bureaucracy, but var are the ones applying everything inconsistently.

lloris was clearly off his line for sterlings pen, that is as factual as the ball hitting an arm, so why was the pen not retaken?
Report lurka February 4, 2020 9:42 AM GMT
Because they don't review the keeper's feet with VAR, despite changing the rule because they could police it with VAR.

They brought VAR in on a trial basis in minor tournaments but it seems clear to me that it is still in trial now, they haven't sorted out when it should and shouldn't be used and are making rule changes every year to accomodate its use. Thus, it should still be in trial for another few years and shouldn't be used in major tournaments.
Report Rider February 4, 2020 11:11 AM GMT
epl say var will police it if its a 'clear', well why dont they get their offside equipment on the case? because lloris clearly encroached on the still before the ball left the penalty spot, and why do refs keep telling a goalkeeper to stay on their line before the pk when it is taken if they then proceed to ignore it (like all the stuff at corners)

does encroachment give the goalkeeper an advantage? of course it does and its done for that reason, nothing accidental at all
Report Rider February 4, 2020 11:38 AM GMT
so epl the only country operating var that allows encroachment of goalkeeper, what with all the blatant penalties not given you really do get the impression they do their best stop goals being scored
Report lurka February 4, 2020 2:03 PM GMT
They don't police it in the CL either. The barca keeper saved a pen and was clearly off the line as well. Apparently they didn't think the amount of retaken pens would look good after the shambles in the Women's World Cup

Report Blackrock February 5, 2020 9:55 AM GMT
The rules were changed to make VAR seem neccessary. Handball/Offside rules now ridiculous. What's wrong with being onside if you are level [not big toe in front of defender] or only handball if its obviously intentional?

Mistakes will still happen but we won't have this situation were VAR are actively seeking a way to disallow goals just to justify their existence.

If it was a defender that's not the change in rules.

problem with stamping at chelsea is, ref didn't see it, lino didn't see it, 4th official who presumably was about 5 yards away didn't see it. var has picked it up and all needed was someone who knew rules at stockley park and bingo, all ok.
another thing, would the authorities have admitted a red wasn't given incorrectly  if spurs had got back to 2-2 ???
Report Rider February 23, 2020 1:57 PM GMT
when it happened it was obvious on the replays what lo celso had done, yet btsport expert and former ref peter walton said it wasnt a red, how on earth could he get that wrong?, he clearly isnt being objective, as an employee of btsport doesnt he realise he is being paid to give his opinion, instead he seemed to go in-house and side with his pals and this is the source of all VAR problems as the stockley park refs are doing the same thing too often

just forget the politics and give the right decision

Report lurka February 24, 2020 12:11 AM GMT
By not using the monitors in the PL they are making it harder for the correct decision to be reached because a ref looking at the monitor is basically reffing the incident again with a better view and can change his decision if he thinks it was wrong on a second view.

But the guys in Stockley Park have to think the ref got it wrong AND that the decision was clearly and obviously wrong, which it quite often isn't. That is basically adding another hurdle to changing the decision. If they think he got it wrong but it is not clearly and obviously wrong they are powerless to change the decision. That is not right. If the monitors were used a lot of these decisions would go the other way.
Report Rider February 24, 2020 10:53 AM GMT
If they think he got it wrong but it is not clearly and obviously wrong they are powerless to change the decision

are you sure they are powerless?

burnley/bournemouth game, goal disallowed for handball in the build up, which looked to me and most pundits to be shoulder, so that wasnt clear and obvious - VAR chalk it off

you then get a very obvious handball by de bruyne from a goal bound freekick, who's hands are above shoulder height, and nothing is given

its a total shambles you cannot defend it, they have to either sort it out fast or just scrap it
Report Rider February 24, 2020 11:07 AM GMT
and what about the 4th official kevin friend at the chelsea/spurs game, have a look 4 pictures down..

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-8032873/Jamie-Redknapp-hits-call-use-David-Coote-VAR-Manchester-Citys-trip-Leicester.html

lampard got his hands in the air as the stamp happens but friend conveniently (imo) looks away, didnt see it doesnt have to make a decision, weak in the extreme, why would you look away as a major incident happens?

in fact there are probably 100 people in the picture, kevin friend is the only one looking away, he sums up the pass the buck attitude of our pathetic officials

Bournemouth were robbed well and truly ...twice in fact  ...just hope that doesn't send them down Plain
Report lurka February 25, 2020 3:21 PM GMT
I'd imagine if it's shoulder versus arm that's a factual decision and not subject to the clear and obvious requirement. It's clear that the defender intends to play the ball with whatever it hit and it's therefore not really a subjective decision as to whether it was handball under the rules but rather a factual decision as to whether it hit his arm or his shoulder. I don't think there was a clear and obvious requirement in this case.

By not using the monitors as a rule it is applying the review process with different criteria effectively and IFAB have already told the PL that they have an issue with this and that monitors are an essential part of the process.

The 4th official wouldn't have had a decision to make even if he was looking right at Lo Celso. He is not involved in the decision or the review especially when there is a video review in place. Don't know why you raised this as a point.
Report Rider February 25, 2020 4:24 PM GMT
its shoulder lurka, thats what the ref saw and gave, thats what the replays showed, exactly the same as the lallana one, so absolutely no reason to get involved and chalk it off, its not obviously arm to anyone except those like peter walton no doubt

so the 4th official does not help the on-field ref with something he may not have seen?, is this another rule to be obeyed or something? i'd have thought he is there to help and why is he the only one looking away in that case? i maybe brought it up because i like to see the right decisions and use some much needed common sense..
Report Rider February 25, 2020 4:25 PM GMT
lol
Report lurka February 25, 2020 11:26 PM GMT
I think it clearly hits his arm. The shoulder is round and a very small area and once it touches below the round point that is the arm. I also think it is possible for the ball to touch both shoulder and arm. I agree with that decision but it's a bit farcical that a goal went in at the other end first.

It was a red all day long and if you want to see the right decisions then blame the guy in Stockley Park for not giving a red or the PL for not letting refs use monitors. It would have been reviewed anyway and they've come out and admitted that the VAR guy got it wrong. Don't know why you are focusing on the 4th official when he's the only one who didn't make a decision.
Report Rider February 26, 2020 11:36 AM GMT
lurka, bournemouth went up the other end and scored for the 2nd 'handball' that led to the penalty for burnley, NOT the 1st 'handball', which i'm referring to, and which was clearly shoulder according to everyone bar VAR which led to a 'goal' for bournemouth that got chalked off

for chel/spurs the 4th official had a better view than oliver, he's miked up to him, why doesnt friend say thats a red card? oh right because he looked away and didnt see it, dont you see this is the culture of refereeing that is the cancer of the sport? you seem to exonerate him because VAR will look which sort of makes me think you are a jobsworth too, i'm actually blaming all the officials because between all of them they got it wrong

we want the right decisions, its easy to see thats a red from where friend was standing, he should have taken responsibility, he didnt
