To be fair, don't think Man U are more hated than most of the elite clubs currently.

There is the 'biggest club' that is always around as an issue though - that's the simple answer. They get biggest crowds/ground, marketing, etc, so other fans see it as an unfairness.

Whether it is unfair is a different question. End of the day they're failing despite it, so seems a moot issue currently.

Mick Hucknall is from Manchester and i make it 1.01 that Rachel Riley has been to more matches than most of the posters on here. She goes almost every week and is often seen in the away end at United matches.

I don't think people dislike Manchester United but they have a huge following of dislikeable fans. I go to football and find their genuine fans as good, decent and knowledgeable about football as anyone. However their collection of plastic glory hounds are complete ****s. Loads of people support Man Utd for the same reason people supported Liverpool in the 80's - they wanted to support a successful team. Rather than support a team from or near their home town that all their community and mates can get behind and support.

The saturation / over representation of ever present ex-Liverpool players come pundits on every station talking about the club as if they're Royalty, how their fans deserve success, back in my day, Bill Shankley would say this, Bob Paisly would say that and how a player wasn't fit to wear the shirt, which is really reinforcing how good he was, boosting his own ego and standing. The nauseating fans from London who had zero sense of locality whilst blidingly and shamelessly attached themselves to success are now pot bellied middle aged men who start of each season with 'this is gonna be are year' when most just feel sorry for them.

I don't hate Man Utd , in fact I admired the way they played under Sir Alex when they were often a joy to watch . Great players such as Cantona , Ronaldo , Beckham , Giggs etc.
However , I hate the 'Cockney Reds'

I worked with a fan in Dublin that "supported Man Utd since Munich".  That was the 1990s and he was in his early 20s.

It may have already been stated on here but I only got half way through the thread before writing this.

For me it's based around Alex Ferguson and his arrogance.

He continually bought proven players or players that were highly sought after (the story goes that Wenger had Ronaldo wrapped up until Ferguson gazumped him).

He paid x amount for proven quality from other teams like Ferdinand, Van Persie, Tevez, Yorke, Cole, Berbatov, Keane was poached from Forest, Rooney (again everyone knew how good he was going to be including Everton fans since he was 13) etc and then just bought foreign players for x amount until he found some that worked out. He had the best influx of youth players a manager could have had with the Class of '92.

So compared with every other team he had the best resources - like Mercedes have had in F1 over the past five years.

He is still a superb manager and imo his best ability was getting bang average footballers like O'Shea, Brown, Neville brothers, Fletcher, etc to perform almost beyond their ability through exceptional man management.

So it's the continuous poaching of other teams' best players, the amount of horrific decisions they received in their favour from officials (imagine if people analyse every game and actually shows how fewer trophies they would have won with VAR around) and the self-righteous nature of their fans despite having the best resources and the most money for x amount of years.

Mercedes have dominated - but there's 2 drivers, and it's Hamilton who has outperformed his teammates with the same car, who is driving the car is important, who is managing a football team equally so. Moyes with the same players couldn't have done the same job, not the same man management skills for a start.

Blackburn, Chelsea and Man City all through tons of money to buy success, but Fergie mostly still got the better of all of them over time.

Similarly to Barcelona having Iniesta and Xavi from their grass roots forming a big reason why they dominated football for so long (in addition to Messi but their midfield hasn't looked any where near as strong as it used to be without Iniesta and Xavi).

So I think inheriting Giggs, Beckham and Scholes was massive. As you stated, how United hadn't exactly dominated before they came onto the scene.

I agree Blackburn bought the league which backs up my point. They were never going to sustain it as they haven't got the structure or fan base in place and Jack Walker passed away.

Chelsea have had great success over the past 15 years and without checking, they look to have really balanced the books in recent years. City spent £100 million on two full backs over the past few seasons and will not doubt spend another £80 million off on Chillwell. I don't have any respect for a club financially backed by a sovereign state.

The teams with the most resources poach the top players from rival clubs, Munich do the same in Germany. It used to be United but now they don't have the best resources like they used to.

My point about Mercedes is that you could put pretty much any F1 driver in their cars over four of the past five years (not last year as Hamilton had the third best car imo) and their car would win the Championship.

Even back in the early days, Ferguson spunked his junk on players like Paul Ince, Gary Pallister (the latter cost over 2 million in the 1980!). Always had the resources in place.

scandanavian_haven - my point about United having the best resources is comparatively and in proportion to other teams.

When needed over the past 30 years they have always had the ability to go out and spend big if required - when not every club has ALWAYS had that luxury with the exception of Liverpool - the latter is embarrassing for them but in reality, United are going through that same cycle now.

Manchester City are supported by a Sovereign State - they now have more resources than Manchester United but I agree that United have still spent £700 million since Ferguson retired yet Phil Jones is still starting at centre back. Pretty much says it all about the state of their recruitment.

Wenger had an advantage with the diet and fitness of his players, plus an exceptional judge of talent through his scouts - all of those advantages were copied by other teams and he had to oversee/manage the new stadium so he basically lost his edge.

Mourinho was around for around three seasons at Chelsea against United and he got the better of Ferguson by winning two league titles back to back during that time.

Liverpool only really had one proper manager against Ferguson, Rafa Benetiz and they had a good close fight which fair play Ferguson won.

When City became a threat they beat United and Ferguson to the title in the last minute.

So Barcelona only achieved when Messi started playing...perhaps it took Barcelona a long transitional period to overcome Madrid's long period of dominance due to various factors...like it took United/Ferguson. It's not as if Xavi and Iniesta played a key contribution in their country winning the World Cup and European Championships...

Chelsea and City were no where to be seen in the 1990s and United only really had to really face one decent team in most seasons.

It's not like it has been over the past three seasons. Conte, Klopp and Pep are all excellent managers proven in other top European countries.

My point about Mercedes is that they would have won four of the last five championships regardless of who was driving. Who won it out of their two drivers is irrelevant to the point that Mercedes have had the strongest car during four of those years. I remember many years ago when Mika Hakkinen was portrayed as being very average by many (I always thought he was very good) yet when he joined McLaren who arguably had the best car, he became multiple world champion.

Football hooligan firms are organised groups that purposely take part in violent or other anti-social behaviour surrounding football. Frowned upon in contemporary society by most, hooliganism was at its peak in the United Kingdom during the 1970s and 1980s. Although on a smaller scale, football hooliganism remains an integral part of football culture. Hooliganism has influenced many aspects of the match going fan. For example, it is not unusual to see many fans dressed in football casual attire all over stadiums in the UK.

Manchester United’s hooligans are known as the Red Army. However, various sub-divisions of firms have been created amongst United fans due to large numbers. Some of these sub-divisions of the Red Army are known as Men in Black, the Young Munich’s, the Inter City Jibbers, the M58 Firm and the Moston Rats.

The name Red Army is often used to refer to all sections of Manchester United’s support. However, United’s more active fans were called this originally in the 1970s. The Red Army made a name for themselves in the 1974/1975 season whilst United were playing in division two. The Red Army would travel around to market towns and smaller grounds across England causing havoc. Regularly the Red Army would outnumber the home support of the team they were away to.

Manchester United are one of the biggest football clubs in the world and this has resulted in gaining a fan base from all over the world. Consequentially, this means that United have hooligans based all over the United Kingdom. Various sub-sections of the Red Army such as Cockney Reds, Coventry Reds, and Carlisle Reds have been recognised.

Traditionally, Manchester United have had more arrests made due to football-related violence than any other club in the country. In 2005, United had 160 supporters arrested for hooliganism and 100 supporters received banning orders. This is almost double any other club in the United Kingdom.

Notably, clashes between United fans and St Etienne fans in the 1977 European Cup Winners’ Cup resulted in United being forced to play a home match in Plymouth. Consequentially, due to the reputation the Red Army had developed allowed French police to be prepared for what was in store. At the time there was a bakery strike on in the UK, this resulted in the St Etienne fans throwing stale bread at United fans. This escalated in various clashes with St Etienne fans. As a result, 33 people were taken to hospital whilst police continued to escort United fans out of the stadium. The trouble resulted in United being forced to play the return leg 200km away from Old Trafford and Plymouth was the chosen venue.
