ref initially gave a penalty. so they had to restart with a drop ball once the decision to award a penalty was overturned by VAR

Yes, if the penalty wasn't a pen because the defender hooked it off his foot and put it over the line, it's a corner, no way striker could recover it.

it's because it's written within the rules that when a decision is overturned, the ref must restart with a drop ball

but law seems to be that a reversed penalty is a drop ball whatever happens

agree, imagine that's last minute of injury time though, ref gives pen ( and overturned by var ) , a corner would be preferable ie keep ball in corner , but as drop ball and other team go up field and score.
