Absolutely not, why?
England players not consulted.
A player should not dictate when he wants to and doesn't want to play for his country, that's a decision for the coach and the FA.
Don't forget there are occasions when he excluded himself for playing in England fixtures that were not attractive to him and used some dubious cover story to get out of it.
He is using the game as a platform for his foundation, however laudable the cause may be, this is a game where hungry young players who want to fight for the badge may be denied a place because of some fancy PR exercise.
Rooney was a good servant for the country but should not entitle him to any preferential treatment from the England team.

Given this is in effect a meaningless game maybe 3 days before a must win game who cares, it's going to be a very experimental England side anyway.

Loads of nations do send off games for ex-players, what is the big deal here?
Report BARNEY15C November 6, 2018 12:43 PM GMT
Denying a place to a player who could do with match practice before a competitive match, for one.

To earn a cap for your country is an honour every professional player aspires to.This sends out the wrong message IMO and demeans its status when you dole them out like sweets.

cmon its a farewell game with profits going to charity, whats is wrong with people
Report lord skywalker November 6, 2018 1:08 PM GMT
no big deal, gotta be someone who moans about it

what about the occasions he cried out of playing for his country when it didn't suit him, no he shouldn't get preferential treatment, it wouldn't stop DC United putting on a friendly against an all star team if money for his charity is concerned.

119 caps for England. He's a player who has almost always wanted to play. Nonsense to suggest otherwise. He may have been caught up in club v country tussles from time to time like other top English players but not really his fault. As has been said earlier in the thread, this game is pretty meaningless particularly with the Croatia game 3 days later so it's really not an issue to give Rooney a good send off, help his charity and allow the current team to prepare themselves for Croatia.

This sort of nonsense should be reserved exclusively for World Cup winners.

It devalues international caps. I wonder how much say Southgate had in the decision for Rooney to play when he's been trying to get rid of the egos within the squad and build a togetherness amongst the players. Why not call it an England XI nad not award caps?
Report BARNEY15C November 6, 2018 2:44 PM GMT
Do it for Rooney and then how many effective testimonial international matches you allow for other long standing players, FA should not be setting precidents.
Report scandanavian_haven November 6, 2018 2:50 PM GMT
absolute big deal about nothing, vas majority of people could not care less about friendlies with many not even bothing to tune in, yet now they're all up arms about Rooney playing in what is in effect a charity match, nothing to see here other than people who like to moan about anything and everything.

THE proceeds of the game won't be donated. There will be donation buckets. As for Rooney really? What has he done ? Fat jug eared tw@t who moaned about the HOME fans booing. So called HOME fans had paid a lot of money to get to South Africa to be served up with the dross on the pitch. Rooney is a long long way down the list of English football hero's
