Souness is right, that 2nd half England went back to there bad old ways as Croatia pushed right up the park and as we were now not good enough to play it out from the back under pressure from a decent team we resorted to lumping it upfield and as a result it was then coming straight back time after time after time and only a matter of time before something fell for Croatia and they equalise because Kane could not put away the chance to make it 2-0 in the 1st half from a tight angle but only 3 yards out with the goal gaping and the keeper on his arse and the last ditch defender marooned on the far side of the goal line, we thought we were over the line from the 1st half but that 2nd half was shockingly bad.
Report TheBaron July 13, 2018 2:06 PM BST
I think fatigue played a big factor.  In the 2nd half they looked tired so just reverted to type i.e hoof up field to big man to head.  Up till then they showed promise.  Very much a work in progress.

Souness and Keane, both top midfielders, point out the midfield problem that most unbiased people can see England have, and both are castigated because they're not English. And you wonder why plenty of people out there wanted you to fail.
Report lurka July 13, 2018 2:58 PM BST
Souness spot on about midfield play but England were hoofing it a lot in the second half and ET. They were penned back in their own half and outnumbered in midfield, didn't really have any players in space to pass it out to and were pressed high up the pitch due to sheer weight of numbers in midfield. The 3 CHs were marking Madzukic between them, Rebic and Perisic had pushed Tripper and Young all the way back to a back 5. England had zero width in midfield and the Croatian full backs were playing like unmarked wingers. Henderson was so deep he was like a 4th CH and kept hoofing the ball straight back to Croatia.

England are better in midfield than just long ball hoofers but didn't play like they were and invited pressure by sitting back. Not just about poor passing but also poor tactics in pulling too many men back and giving way too much space in midfield to Croatia and doing nothing to change it.

Kane could not put away the chance to make it 2-0 in the 1st half from a tight angle but only 3 yards out with the goal gaping and the keeper on his arse

except the keeper wasnt on his arse, he recovered to get his toe to it which made the difference between a goal and deflecting it onto the post

Souness and Keane are not castigated because they're not English ffs. Souness is loved in Liverpool and generally well liked by most fans that watch Sky, widely perceived to be a good pundit, one of the better one's.

Roy Keane is just a spiteful nob who hates the English and struggles to hide his resentment, it's pure jealously that we can qualify for every tournament and far superior players than his country could ever produce, as a winner he struggles to come to terms with that, but he was apart of the coaching team that failed, failed to get Ireland to the World Cup and for some unbeknown reasons, in the play-off second leg, decided to give Denmark's most dangerous player oceans of space in the middle of the pitch to do what he wanted, and he did.

Comes on to English TV and berates the English pundits for getting carried away, as if that doesn't happen in every single country.
Report Outpost July 13, 2018 4:43 PM BST
the thing that annoyed most non english was the english media and english pundits going totally overboard after england beat panama.

suddenly they had fooled lots of gullible fans into thinking england were favourites to win the competition.

the only team they beat after that was sweden but in a lot of folk's mind (Media, fans and players) that meant they were already in the final and they completely underestimated croatia.

a decent manager would have brought them back to earth before the game but gareth was getting caught up in all the hero worship he was getting and was actually believing all the hype.

a team of ordinary players with a less than average manager who got really lucky with the draw.

I doubt this team will ever get so far again in a competition.

Take a day off mes ''far superior players than his country could ever produce'' you must have not seen the man himself play, would be Englands best player by a mile..
Report mesmerised July 13, 2018 4:55 PM BST
The point is correct, England can produce far superior players than Ireland ever could, which is understandable given the population difference. But that's what eats at him, you have to admit he is a very bitter and angry man.

He would get into the midfield that Southgate picked, but that's not saying much is it, Henderson and Alli, two poor picks I called out before the tournament and that video Lurka posted proved it.

I didn't underestimate Crotia, said before the game I'd take one nil with the quality they have, truth be known we should and could have killed the game if Kane had bothered to square it to Sterling for an open goal.
Report Outpost July 13, 2018 4:57 PM BST
no guarantee sterling would have scored with an open goal

Robson was the engine in the then Utd team similarly, Keane. To me both were equally magnificent footballers, their origin did not come into it. Similarly, Mcfarland and Todd for Derby.

But Keane was right to try and instil a bit of reality into the English dominated panel who were running away with themselves despite England's struggle to beat any team of quality eg Colombia. On performances, did England deserve to be in the Final? Absolutely not, unless one is English by origin; Croatian have achieved much more than England in this competition, and deserve their place 100%.

Putting club loyalty and nationality aside if they were horses Lampard would be at least a furlong behind Keane in a 5f horse race. And that would be a conservative estimate.

Only chance Keane would have in beating Lampard in a horse race if his name was Mountain Tunes and he ran on a day where all the top runners around him pulled up or fell one by one whilst he galloped through from the back at a steady pace.

you already had 5 or 6 divers in the team so what was the point of taking another one.

especially one who was just going to regularly fall over, stick his arm up in the air and hold up the game for 5 minutes.
Report politicspunter July 14, 2018 9:51 AM BST
I guess you mean wilshire. Look at Kane though. He was always dangerous at set pieces but whenever he was outside the box all he did was fall down when anyone came near him in order to get a free kick when we could then lump the ball into the box for our sole threat.
Report Outpost July 14, 2018 9:55 AM BST
alli dived after 5 minutes against croatia and that gave england their early goal.

him and kane then went down regularly in the box at free kicks and corners but the ref never gave anything.
Report irishone July 14, 2018 10:31 AM BST
Its pretty desp if the main tactic is to get set plays
Most teams with that approach survive a few seasons ask puliss
England were caught out with the two down each of the flanks
The midfield narrowed up too much and left acres wide
Skill wise it was a match up , but once england manager stuck for an answer
Report Blackrock July 14, 2018 10:43 AM BST
As we were pushed back in the second half and being overrun in midfield, the manager had decisions to make which he got completely wrong.

Kane was out on his feet and should have been taken off and replaced by Dier. Put Sterling in the middle up front [still had the legs to do the job]. This would have helped shore up the midfield. But no, the manager takes off Sterling and Henderson [another midfielder] when we needed all hands on board there.

We do have a less than average midfield but we could have muddled through with the right tactical decisions. Lingard and Alli seemed to fall short imo.
Report irishone July 14, 2018 2:17 PM BST

Henderson and alli were probably ..... But we dont know .
