Police have said they will clamp down on Liverpool supporters planning a hostile reception for Manchester City ahead of the Champions League quarterfinal first leg at Anfield next month.

A social media campaign has urged Liverpool fans to converge on the streets leading up the ground with pyrotechnics and flares before kickoff.

City declined to comment on what the campaign described as a "coach greeting," but sources told ESPN FC that club officials are concerned and are likely to speak to both Liverpool and the police, seeking assurances about safety for the team and supporters' coaches.

The City team were given a hostile welcome by fans when they arrived at Anfield ahead of a Premier League game in 2014 when both sides were going for the title.

A minibus containing City fans was pelted with bricks and stones, but nobody was injured.

Merseyside Police said they were aware of the plans for the Champions League match and warned that they would not tolerate "dangerous and reckless" behaviour before or during the game.

"While recognising that some supporters feel they can add to the atmosphere of the occasion, the use of flares and other pyrotechnics at and around football matches is a concern," Superintendent Paul White said in a statement.

"We fully support the club in working to eradicate this dangerous and reckless practice and would ask that supporters work with us.

"The police and courts take these offences very seriously and prosecution can result in a prison sentence.

"I would remind people that this can apply not only within the stadium, but also in the surrounding streets and when attempting to enter the ground."

City and Liverpool meet for the second leg at the Etihad Stadium just six days later, and there are concerns that any problems in the first leg could prompt similar scenes in Manchester.

A poster circulated by Liverpool fan Twitter feeds @RedmenTV and @WeRLFC and widely shared by others is urging Liverpool fans to gather more than two hours before kick off for a 'coach greeting', and line the streets for a quarter of a mile before the City team coach reaches the ground.

“We're going to show them exactly what money can't buy,” declares the poster.

It also says: "Bring your flares and flags. Banners and bangers. Pints and Pyro. There will be thousands of scouse voices ready to scare em back to Mancland with their tails between their legs before the match even starts."

Manchester City fans were left severely shaken after their minibus was attacked by youths as they travelled to the game at Anfield on Sunday.

A window was smashed after thugs reportedly threw stones and bricks while wearing Liverpool shirts.

No-one in the vehicle was seriously injured but they told of how shocked they were at the events

Maybe Liverpool feel a tad intimidated when a bigger club comes into town.

"“We're going to show them exactly what money can't buy,” declares the poster".

This is clearly the market without these signings:

Benteke £41m
Mane £37m
The Ox £34m
Salah £37m
van Dijk £70m

I recall in the 70's travelling back to Tyneside on a cold evening with most of the windows on the coach having been smashed after a game against Manchester City. That was after being pelted with coins during the game.

This sort of behaviour isn't restricted to Liverpool / Manchester City, it will have happened to most supporters who have visited 'big city' clubs including that of my own.

I'm guessing the poster is talking about atmosphere not on the pitch however can't condone any physical attack on any property or person

probably the resentment towards city is that they themselves were a just hairsbreath away from being taken over by rich arabs

but David Moores opted for Hicks & co instead....

I'll bet Mr Moores has had many of a sleepless night.....thinking of what could've been.......what could've been

Johnny, Benteke is an absolute joke of a player. None of my fellow Palace supporters wants him in the team, a complete and utter waste of space.

Yep, agree Slippy. Was merely pointing out that contrary to what that certain supporter feels, Liverpool themselves have spent a fair few quid.

Always used to enjoy the walk back to Lime street Cool fifty or sixty of you and you'd have no problems, they were only good at picking off stragglers still I'd say have at it if they want. Not being the sharpest tools in the shed don't they realise what goes around comes around and they have to go to City for the return Mischief

Never really understand the point of stuff like this.

Surely it just motivates the City players even more? It would me. Daft idea which will only backfire.
