Premier League club will reject any press accreditations for matches from reporters working for The Sun newspaper

Liverpool fans have boycotted The Sun since the false report was published on 1989’s Hillsborough disaster

The Independent understands that press accreditations from any reporters covering matches from The Sun will not be approved, meaning that the newspaper’s football journalists will be denied entry to Anfield for any matches across all competitions.

It will also be refused any access to interviews with the players, as well as manager Jürgen Klopp, with the decision believed to have come after the club’s directors held talks with the families of those who died in the tragedy. The decision is believed to have been made on Thursday night.

The Sun responds to Liverpool FC banning its reporters
The Sun ran a story on the Hillsborough disaster on 19 April 1989, four days after 96 people were unlawfully killed during a fan crush at Sheffield Wednesday’s Hillsborough Stadium ahead of an FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest, with the headline ‘“The Truth”, in which it carried accusations from an anonymous South Yorkshire policeman that Liverpool supporters had "picked pockets of victims", "urinated on brave cops" and that some beat up a policeman giving the "kiss of life".

The story was published the day after Tony Bland, the 96th victim of the disaster, had his life-support switched off after suffering irreversible brain damage, and caused considerable distress for those grieving the loss of relatives.

The accusations have since been proven false, while a jury found in April last year that the 96 victims were unlawfully killed following a 27-year legal battle for justice, led by the families of those who died. Following that verdict, both The Sun and The Times, its sister title, left any mention of the Hillsborough verdict of unlawful killing off its first edition front page, a decision that was heavily criticised.

A renewed campaign to boycott The Sun increased momentum in recent months, with the Hillsborough Family Support Group giving its backing to The Total Eclipse of The S*n campaign, and it led to many retailers across Liverpool deciding against stocking the newspaper.

The false reports, the families’ claim, caused the pursuit of justice to be delayed, with the legal campaign lasting 27 years until the verdict of unlawful killing was given last year.

The Sun and Kelvin McKenzie, the editor at the time, have attempted to apologise years after the false coverage, but they have not been accepted by the relatives of the dead and the vast majority of Liverpool fans on the whole.

When contacted by The Independent, Liverpool Football Club declined to comment.

When contacted by The Independent, The Sun issued the following statement: "The Sun and Liverpool FC have had a solid working relationship for the 28 years since the Hillsborough tragedy. Banning journalists from a club is bad for fans and bad for football. The Sun can reassure readers this won’t affect our full football coverage.

"The Sun deeply regrets its reporting of the tragic events at Hillsborough and understands the damage caused by those reports is still felt by many in the city. A new generation of journalists on the paper congratulate the families on the hard-fought victory they have achieved through the inquest. It is to their credit that the truth has emerged and, whilst we can't undo the damage done, we would like to further a dialogue with the city and to show that the paper has respect for the people of Liverpool."
________________

remember Kelvin Mckenzie last year going on for a minute about how duped he was and how bad he felt for liverpool fans after the fans were deemed to unlawfully killed at the inquest, then he was thown off guard and asked should the sun have put the story on liverpool fans being exonerated of any blame on their front page like every other paper did and his mask quickly slipped.

None did and they never will.  What amazes me is the copper Duckenfield who denied giving the command to open the gates and blamed the fans for forcing them eventually admitted it last year and said the same at the inquest.  He has not been by the CPS pulled up for falsifying his statement and bringing the force into disrepute, misconduct in public office and the more serious peverting the course of justice.  He admitted it at an inquiry, on oath.  Why hasnt he been pulled up.  Why havent the coppers who edited and changed statements?

Secondly and I am not defending the Sun here, the papers, all of them had their own people in every police force, celeb circle, government etc and they only printed what South Yorks and the government fed them.  All their exclusives was hush hush off the record statements made by South Yorks top brass as a damage limtiation and to shift the blame from themselves to the fans, The Sun merely thought they had the hop and exclusive over all their print and TV colleagues on a world exclusive, all fed by the corrupt officials at South Yorks finest.

Dont forget South Yorks finest have overseen the 5 biggest scandals in recent times, Hillsborough, Rotheram, Orgreave, Cliff richard (in cahoots with the press again) , rhino whip scandal.

On another note, I remember when I was at the Galatasary v Arsenal UEFA cup final in copenhagen in i think 2000 and we were attacked for 3 days straight by them and that other **** Piers Morgan lied and printed our photos and photos of my mates saying we caused it and published photos of us merely defending ourselves.  My mates lost their jobs at Consignia (new name for royal mail at the time) got sacked and on tribunal appeal got their jobs back and a pay off but they were never taken back even though the tribunal said they had to.  Other mates werent so lucky and lost ther jobs and hit depression, lost their house, family the lot.  Piers morgan for years didnt say ****, it eventually come out we were attacked, defending ourselves and he apologised some 10 years later the c u nt.  Matters not to him, he is still earning and has earned millions since with BGT and GMB etc, my mates are still **** from it.  Oh and he tapped peoples phnes the ****.

The Sun ran these stories based on what South Yorkshire police officers told them. They have since apologised.

There is still a lot of anger amongst the relatives of the deceased and that is understandable given the enormity of the tragedy. No one should go to a football match and die.

The deaths were not caused by the Sun. At fault that day were the FA, the local authority, the police and the people pushing. Only when all that is acknowledged can their be closure.

South Yorkshire Police rightly carried the biggest burden about that tragic day and of course the design of the stadium rightly led to much needed direction and modifications but the thing that has remained with me over all those years and still remains is the role that the Liverpool fans played in that day.

Ive grown up believing that when the gates were opened on police instruction (wrongly of course) there were fans who entered the ground without tickets causing serious ovrcrowding. If that is the case then surely the Liverpool fans in question should hang their haeds in shame at the series of events that their actions caused.

Of course there were fans without tickets. Even now there are Liverpool fans who boast of getting into matches without tickets so it'd be ludicrous to imagine there were none there that day. I am not saying supporters of other clubs don't try to get in without tickets.

I've been in the stands at OT when there have been 60,000 in the ground and I know there is a lot less elbow room than when there was 57,000 in there so very definitely the fans without tickets must have contributed to the crush.

But from watching the videos it's pretty plain to see that the fans died because of the pushing at the back. Fans desperate to see their side met up with a wholly unsuitable ground with inadequate policing and 96 innocent people died.

I believe because of Hillsborough and other tragedies  it is incumbent on every football supporter to behave themselves at games.

There were ticketless fans but I doubt that was a factor.

The ground was actually under capacity at the time people were being crushed to death , even the terrace they died on had plenty of room , but the space was in the outside pens.

Anyone walking through the tunnel would naturally go straight in to the centre pen. There was a door to the left leading to the side pen but you just wouldn't be aware as no signs or stewards directing fans that way.

So the stadium was very badly designed for the purpose and it required someone in charge that knew the stadium and knew football.

The guy in charge knew nothing about either ; thought Liverpool were playing against 'Nottinghamshire'

from the daily mirror owned Liverpool Echo...

The Sun has been banned from attending all press conferences and football matches at Anfield.

The decision was taken on Friday, February 10, 2017.

Which begs the obvious question - why have they been actually allowed in for the past 28 years?

The answer lies in the very different media landscape which existed in 1989.

Sports departments of national newspapers and their news desks operated very independently of each other.

Independently and often competitively.

Sports writers regularly counted players and senior officials at football clubs as friends as well as contacts and went out of their way to protect those sources. They often fell foul of their news desks as a result.

A sports reporter wouldn't file a story about a player falling out of a bar drunk at 2am, usually because he'd be falling into a cab home with him.

News reporters would frequently tell their sports desk colleagues they weren't 'proper' journalists. It didn't matter to Sports Editors, because those writers delivered the best sports exclusives as a result.

People inside football clubs also treated sports writers and news reporters differently.

They trusted their daily sports contacts, but were suspicious of news reporters.

And that was the mindset at work when the Sun's newsdesk decided to run its infamous headline the week after the disaster.

Phil Thomas took over from Ellis and inherited the goodwill and respect he had generated.

But since the Hillsborough Inquest finally and belatedly delivered a verdict of unlawful killing last year - delivering the first signs of justice at long last - people have demanded accountability.

And that reviled publication has finally been brought to account.
